Corey Washington became a fan favorite after the 2014 preseason. Now he will be looking for another franchise to play for.

Now former New York Giants' wide receiver Corey Washington's stay on the injured reserve didn't last long. It was reported Sunday afternoon that the former undrafted free agent would be released from the injured reserve after receiving an injury settlement.

The move will make Washington a free agent.

Washington electrified the Giants' fanbase by catching one game-winning touchdown after another in the 2014 preseason. However limited special teams abilities combined with a developing route tree kept him off the field in the regular season.

Washington started the preseason with the Giants' second team. However, an apparently disinterested attitude and consistently impressive performances -- on both offense and special teams -- by Geremy Davis helped the rookie beat Washington for a spot on the Giants 53-man roster.

Now Washington is free to sign with another team.

We already knew that the New York Giants would have to make a roster move when they claimed Louis Nix iii off waivers from the Houston Texans.

It was generally assumed that with five defensive tackles already on the roster, either Cullen Jenkins or Markus Kuhn would be waived to make room for Nix. The Giants, evidently, decided to go with option C "None of the above", and cut free agent signee Kenrick Ellis.

Ellis was expected to add depth as a run-stuffing defensive tackle to a defense that desperately needed to upgrade their run defense. He was signed in the "second wave" of free agency to a one year "prove it" deal after being let go by the New York Jets.

This brings up several questions.

1) Why Ellis?

2) Why not Jenkins or Kuhn?

We'll start with the first question.

The simple answer is that when Nix is healthy -- and we should assume he is --, Ellis is redundant and outclassed. Louis Nix not only brings Ellis' ability to clog running lanes and control blockers, but he also has the power, quickness, and agility to provide some interior pass rush (even if it is "collapsing" the pocket rather than "penetrating" it).

Also, Nix is in the second year of a rookie contract, which puts him under the Giants' control for longer and less money than Ellis' one year "prove it" deal allows.

There could also have been personality issues in the locker room that we aren't privy to. That sort of thing might never come out (particularly with a team like the Giants), but it does happen.

Now for that sticky second question.

First off, Jenkins is a veteran. The Giants are going through a major youth movement at the moment, but they still need guys in the locker room who have "been there and done that". Jenkins provides leadership and mentorship to the young players, helping to settle them down, slow the game down, and help teach them how to prepare like professionals. Also, while his decline from the second half of 2013 through 2014 shows that he is no longer an every down player, Jenkins does offer ability as both a defensive tackle and defensive end in a more limited role. That kind of versatility is definitely useful.

And as for Kuhn?

Honestly: I got nuthin'.

Throughout camp and the first part of preseason, I figured that Kuhn was getting chances to show the coaches something, anything, to keep him, but ultimately wouldn't make the roster. I don't begrudge that to the coaches, after all, Kuhn is the kind of high-motor, high-character player that coaches love to have. But I never saw anything on the field. His best game was still overshadowed by the other defensive tackles on the roster.

Perhaps the Giants are rewarding Kuhn's hard work. Perhaps they are keeping him around as an example for the younger players to show the merits of hard work. My personal conspiracy theory is that Kuhn is actually an unblockable-man beast, but has been sandbagging it in preseason to throw off offensive coordinators.

But then there's this from Tom Coughlin:

"Well, he's a big, strong guy. We've talked an awful lot about stopping the run, and he can hold the point in there, which he's done over and over," Coughlin said. "He's very smart, and so we look at him as a guy that can anchor down in there and can knock back off the ball. And he's pretty much done that."

Somebody in the Giants organization obviously likes Kuhn. Tom Coughlin has stood behind his player in the media, but he stands behind everybody. Is it Steve Spagnuolo? Jerry Reese? Whoever it is, hopefully Kuhn will -- finally -- reward their faith in him.

Practice squad signings announced.

The New York Giants have officially announced the signings of six players to their 10-man practice squad. They are offensive linemen Adam Gettis and Emmett Cleary, wide receiver Julian Talley; defensive end Brad Bars; linebacker Cole Farrand; and defensive back C.J. Conway. The Giants have four more spots to fill.

Gettis played 13 games for the Washington Redskins in 2013. He was inactive for two games with the Giants in 2014. Talley has played in four regular-season games for the Giants over the past two seasons, but has not caught a pass. Cleary signed a reserve/futures deal with the Giants in January. Bars, Farrand and Conway are all rookies.

In case you missed the news, the Giants were awarded defensive tackle Louis Nix III and cornerback Asa Jackson off waivers on Sunday. Defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis and cornerback Mike Harris were dropped from the 53-man roster to make room for them.

Stay tuned for more roster moves as they happen.

Giants get help on defense

The New York Giants were awarded a pair of veteran defensive players off waivers Sunday. Cornerback Asa Jackson and defensive tackle Louis Nix have been added to the roster. To make room for them on the 53-man roster, defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis was released and cornerback Mike Harris was waived.

Nix is a run-stopping 6-foot-2, 331-pound defensive tackle formerly from Notre Dame. He was drafted in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, but never played as knee surgery and a wrist injury landed him on injured reserve. The Texans cut ties with Nix this preseason.

Jackson, 25, was a fifth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2012. He played in 14 games during that three-year period. Last season, he played in seven games, starting six. Significantly, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was the Baltimore defensive backs coach a season ago.

Incidentally, all players released by the Giants cleared waivers. Wide receiver Corey Washington (waived/injured) cleared waivers and is now on the Giants' injured reserve list.

More roster shuffling is coming today, so stay tuned.

The New York Giants set their 53-man roster on Saturday, but they almost certainly are not done tinkering with the group that will face the Dallas Cowboys a week from today in the regular-season opener. Players waived Saturday can be claimed until noon ET on Sunday, and the Giants will be scouring the waiver wire for potential help. Ten-man practice squads can be formed beginning at 1 p.m. ET.

Once the claiming period ends, teams will then be informed as to whether or not they were awarded any players off the waiver wire. After that time, practice squads will begin to be assembled.

What sort of help might the Giants find on the waiver wire? Chris offered several names to watch at positions of need. One thing to remember about adding veteran players to the roster. Teams often wait to do so until after Week 1 of the regular season. Why? A player on the season-opening roster has his salary guaranteed for the full year. A player signed after the first game does not.

Young players still hoping to make it in the NFL, and some players with limited experience hoping for another shot on a 53-man roster, will be joining practice squads this afternoon. Here are the rules and some candidates for the Giants' practice squad.

But is this the Giants FINAL 53-man roster?

Maybe, maybe not.

There are, of course, the rumors that the Giants and the Seattle Seahawks are talking about a Kam Chanecllor trade. That would be a biggie. There are also roughly 700 fooball players who suddenly find themselves without teams today. Twenty-two of them are former Giants, but there are 31 other teams who trimmed their rosters down to 53 Saturday. Among those the Giants might be able to find an upgrade or two.

So let's take a look at some individual units that might benefit from an upgrade.

Safety

This is the obvious unit to target for an upgrade. Despite the Giants spending three of their 2015 draft picks on safeties (2nd, 4th, and 5th), converting cornerback Bennett Jackson to safety, and signing three free agents (Jeromy Miles, Brandon Meriweather, and Stevie Brown). Despite all of that, precious few of those resources stuck as injuries plagued the unit.

Talking to the Giants, told they'll spend the next 48 hours looking for safeties as they feel they need 2--either waiver claims or trade.

With potential trades still up in the air, let's take a look at some safeties who are suddenly on the waiver wire who might help the Giants.

Jonathan Meeks, Buffalo Bills - Meeks is a player that the Bills just didn't want to cut. Reportedly they tried to work a trade for him, but were unable to. Meeks made his mark on special teams in 2013, and impressed as a safety. He missed half of his rookie season with a wrist injury and all of his sophomore season with a neck injury.

Durell Eskridge, New York Jets - Eskridge should be a familiar name around here. As a big, long free safety and a Syracuse alum, it was anticipated that the Giants would be interested in him in the 2015 NFL Draft. Eskridge ultimately went undrafted, signing with the Jets. He is an average athlete, but has exceptional size for the position as well as the ability to play center field.

Kurtis Drummond, Houston Texans - Drummond is another name who should be familiar from the draft process. The free safety has length, athleticism, and ball skills, but showed only average instincts and inconsistent tackling at Michigan State.

Linebacker

Much to the consternation of Giants' fans everywhere, the Giants' linebacking corps has become a perennial weakness. The Giants have some rays of hope there with Devon Kennard, J.T. Thomas, and Uani' Unga, but some young talent would certainly be welcome.

Lynden Trail, Texans - Trail was a pre-draft enigma who the Giants showed some interest in. He transferred to Norfolk State after Urban Meyer left Florida, and possesses intriguing athleticism and physical tools. He could play defensive end, linebacker, or even tight end.

Kevin Reddick, Bills - Reddick is a North Carolina alum, and has the physical tools typical of the players brought in by Butch Davis during his time there. He has great size (6-foot-3, 240 pounds), long arms, and the athleticism to play in space. Reddick is a third-year pro who was claimed off waivers by the Bills after he lost a numbers game in Carolina.

Mason Foster, Chicago Bears - Yet another name that should be familiar to Giants fans. Foster was signed by the Bears after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers let him walk. Foster has played well in preseason, but has a limited ceiling.

Mike Hull, Miami Dolphins - Undersized, slow... But a graduate of Linebacker U, Mike Hull was a tackling machine of a MIKE linebacker at Penn State. Hull is very bright and plays with tremendous instincts, he is the type of linebacker who always manages to find himself around the ball. He is considered a candidate for the Miami practice squad, unless he gets signed to another team first.

Defensive Tackle

The Giants have five defensive tackles on their roster, but Kenrick Ellis is only on a one-year deal, Cullen Jenkins is nearing the end of his career. Oh, and Markus Kuhn. The Giants might look to add a tackle who is both an upgrade and might be around for a while.

Louis Nix, Texans - When Notre Dame made their run to the BCS title game, Nix was often a man among boys on defense. His combination of size, strength, and agility (for his size) were too much for most offensive linemen. Since then he has been slowed by knee issues and hasn't shown the same versatility or dominance, though he did play well in the 2015 preseason.

Kelcy Quarles, Indianapolis Colts - Quarles was in Giants' camp in 2014, and showed promise. He was ultimately waived in favor of Kuhn and landed with the Colts. Quarles reportedly impressed during the Colts' training camp and preseason, and no reason has yet been given for his release.

DeAndre Coleman, Dolphins - Coleman is a strong defensive tackle with outstanding length (6-5, 34 3/8" arms). He was the anchor of the Cal defensive line and is very difficult to move. Coleman isn't much of a pass rusher, but can make life difficult for teams that want to run between the tackles.

Offensive Line

The Giants are only carrying eight offensive linemen, and while Marshall Newhouse has played better than fans have feared he would, the Giants could still use an upgrade at backup tackle. Even if it is only temporary, until Will Beatty comes back. Between the number of linemen teams usually keep and the importance of having quality backups, not many truly good offensive linemen are released.

Andrew McDonald, Cleveland Browns - McDonald seems to be a player that the Browns wanted to keep around, and are trying to figure out a way to keep him on or around their squad. The 6-6, 310-pound left tackle has intriguing tools and could be an upgrade as a backup tackle.

Laurence Gibson, Dallas Cowboys - A developmental tackle, Gibson has the frame of an NFL offensive tackle, he just needs to fill it out. If he can't help the Giants now, he could grow into a replacement for Will Beatty.

Barrett Jones, St. Louis Rams - The Giants love versatility, and Jones might be the walking embodiment of versatility. He played tackle, guard, and center at the University of Alabama, and was an All-American at each of them -- while leading the Tide's offensive line to three National Championships in four years. Tough, smart, and a team leader, he also has the long arms and big hands the Giants love in their linemen.

Jameel McClain (53) was cut Saturday by the Giants | Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

Here are all of the cuts made today by the Giants, and some thoughts on what the Giants did.

Hooray! That is my instant, initial reaction to the roster cuts announced Saturday -- and over the past few days -- as they have trimmed their roster to reach the 53-man regular-season limit. That is not because I am happy anyone got cut. Each player who was ever part of the Giants' 90-man roster poured everything had into either starting or continuing an NFL career. Getting turned away at the door is never easy, or something that should be celebrated.

Here is the full list:

Contracts terminated: LB Jameel McClain, FB Henry Hynoski, WR James Jones, CB Chykie Brown, S Jeromy Miles, LB Ashlee Palmer

Placed on IR: S Nat Berhe (calf), OL Brett Jones (knee)

Waived: TE Adrien Robinson, OL Adam Gettis, OL Emmett Cleary, OL Sean Donnelly, WR Julian Talley, RB Kenneth Harper, QB Ricky Stanzi, DT Dominique Hamilton, DE Brad Bars, LB Cole Farrand, CB Chandler Fenner, CB C.J. Conway, PK kicker Chris Boswell. Wide receiver Corey Washington (shoulder) was waived/injured.

Guys like Steve Weatherford and Hynoski were valuable members of a Giants' championship team, and good people to boot. The Giants also cut the veteran McClain, opting for the upside and athleticism of Uani Unga. There were several other interesting moves, going back to the cuts from 90 to 75 players when offensive lineman Brandon Mosley was waived/injured. Celebrating their release, or that of any individual player, just isn't right. What is worth celebrating is what seems to be the over-arching goal behind what the Giants have done over the past week in constructing their current 53-man roster.

What is it that they appear to have done? Let go of the past. Admitted some of their draft mistakes. Moved into the future. Tried to reshape this roster and give this team a different look and feel from the one that simply hasn't been good enough in recent years. Finally! That, if you are a Giants fan, is worth celebrating. In recent seasons the Giants are open to the criticism that they kept too many players because of what they used to be able to do, or simply because they drafted them and were too stubborn to move on from them. Not the case this time around. Even if Jayron Hosley and Markus Kuhn are, at least for now, still part of the roster.

There are 16 players (30.2) percent of the roster either did not play a game for the Giants last season or were not with the Giants at all.

"It's what you see throughout the league," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "I think that sometimes, to be honest with you, that number and that percentage is a good thing. Because you do need the constant (roster turnover). It happens naturally, but it's a constant as you try and improve. You wouldn't think that a team who won six games (the Giants' 2014 win total) would stay where they are. Well, they're not. You have to try another direction."

The roster is sure to be adjusted with waiver wire/free agent pickups, perhaps in the next day or two, perhaps after Week 1 of the regular season. For now, though, let's break down the existing 53-man roster.

Offense

Quarterback (2)

Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib

Running back (4)

Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams, Shane Vereen, Orleans Darkwa

Fullback (1)

Nikita Whitlock

If this move had been purely about who was the better fullback, Henry Hynoski would still be a Giant. But, he's not. This move is about all of the things Whitlock can do that make him a different, more versatile, player than Hynoski. There is a use for the fullback in the Giants' offense, but as Alex pointed out earlier Hynoski played only 204 snaps last season. Whitlock can play some, if not all, of those. A move tight end like Jerome Cunningham or Larry Donnell could play some of those. Whitlock brings an energy and a special teams ability that the Giants could undoubtedly use.

Tight end (3)

Larry Donnell, Daniel Fells, Jerome Cunningham

Offensive line (8)

Starters (projected) -- Ereck Flowers, Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg, Geoff Schwartz, Marshall Newhouse

Reserves -- John Jerry, Dallas Reynolds, Bobby Hart

Rejoice, Hart fans! The rookie has made the cut. Don't be surprised, though, when the Giants add a veteran tackle for depth.

Wide receiver (6)

Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle, Dwayne Harris, Geremy Davis, Preston Parker

Jones and Washington are the odd men out. I didn't see the Jones cut coming.

Defense

Defensive tackle (5)

Johnathan Hankins, Jay Bromley, Kenrick Ellis, Cullen Jenkins, Markus Kuhn

Sorry, Giants fans! Kuhn remains on the roster. At least today.

Defensive end (5)

Robert Ayers, Kerry Wynn, Damontre Moore, Owamagbe Odighizuwa, George Selvie

No surprises. We'll see what happens when Jason Pierre-Paul shows up.

Linebacker (6)

Jon Beason, Devon Kennard, J.T. Thomas III, Mark Herzlich, Uani Unga, Jonathan Casillas

The most surprising thing here was that the Giants released veteran Jameel McClain, who was thought of as the insurance policy for the oft- (and currently) injured middle linebacker Jon Beason. The Giants must have confidence that Beason, currently sidelined with a knee injury, will be ready to go Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys. Thing about McClain is, despite his team-leading and career-high 116 tackles last season he was/is no more than an adequate player, a guy who led a bad defense. He is not an impact player.

Watching the preseason unfold, you had to be nearly certain Unga was making the team. The Giants used him in the first-team nickel package against the New England Patriots, and as a member of all of the special teams groups.

The fact that they cut recently-signed veteran Ashlee Palmer means they must believe Jonathan Casillas (neck) will be ready for the season-opener.

Cornerback (6)

Prince Amukamara, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Trumaine McBride, Jayron Hosley, Trevin Wade, Mike Harris

Could the Giants still be in the market for a veteran to replace one of the reserves on this list?

Safety (4)

Landon Collins, Stevie Brown, Brandon Meriweather, Cooper Taylor

With Berhe and Miles injured, it pretty much had to be this way. Unless, of course, the Giants dip into the waiver wire. Or trade for Kam Chancellor.

Specialists (3)

Plackekicker -- Josh Brown

Punter -- Brad Wing

Long-snapper -- Zak DeOssie

Here is a quick scouting report on the Giants' new punter from Jeff Hartman of SB Nation's Steelers web site, Behind The Steel Curtain.

Well, he had a very average 2014 season, which lead to them bringing in another punter to provide competition this offseason. Wing has a big leg, but also is prone to the occasional shank. 2014 aside, he has had a really good preseason, and was the known commodity of the two, hence the trade.

He is still very young (only his second season), and one of the biggest question marks from him after 2014 was his holding. He fumbled at least 3 snaps last season, one which lead to a lucky two-point conversion and the other two which ended horribly in a turnover on downs.
