Veteran punter, special teams coordinator have sideline confrontation

New York Giants fans have been heading to Twitter to ask punter Steve Weatherford about the fairly physical confrontation he had with special teams coordinator Tm Quinn after punting a ball into the end zone for a touch-back in the third quarter.

In case you missed it, Quinn challenged Weatherford after a 61-yard Weatherford punt bounded into the end zone for a touch back. Weatherford gestured at and said something to Quinn, who reacted by trying to grab the punter and then chasing him down the bench.

Here are a couple of Weatherford's tweeted responses:

No idea what was actually said between the two. Best guess is that Quinn wasn't happy that Weatherford had punted the ball so far, missing a chance to pin the Titans inside the 20-yard line.

What's a victory without a little drama, anyway?

Well, it came from everywhere. But, why?

The New York Giants' pass rush, missing most of the season, has arrived with a vengeance the past two weeks. The Giants had seven sacks a week ago against the Jacksonville Jaguars and eight Sunday in a 36-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans. That's an amazing 15 in two games.

Granted, these are the Jaguars and Titans, a combined 4-22. And granted, the Titans were trailing badly most of the day Sunday during a game in which they were playing without both starting offensive tackles. Starting quarterback Zach Mettenberger was eventually driven from the game due to the beating the Giants inflcited.

So, what has changed?

First, dynamic rookie linebacker Devon Kennard is finally playing full time. And has finally been turned loose as a pass rusher by defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Kennard has had a pair of sacks in each of the past two games. It was Kennard who knocked the ball out of Zach Mettenberger's hands Sunday, creating the fumble that Markus Kuhn ran back 26 yards for a score.

Second, Jason Pierre-Paul seems to have finally re-discovered the path to the quarterback. Pierre-Paul had two sacks on Sunday, 3.5 in the past two weeks and seven for the season. Maybe it's a salary drive by the free-agent-to-be, and you wonder where it's been all year, but it's still good to see. And much-needed.

Third, Damontre Moore has been playing increased snaps. Moore had two sacks Sunday to bring his season total to five, and one ridiculous sack celebration we hopefully won't see again. He also committed a foolish personal foul that cost the Giants a touchdown. The kid makes plays, though, and he has to play to learn.

Fourth, some of the blitzes Fewell is dialing up are finally getting home. Maybe that is partially because of the presence of Kennard and Moore. The corner blitz on which Mike Harris got a sack Sunday was, however, beautifully designed. Mettenberger read blitz, but from the other side. He had no idea Harris was coming off the slot.

Can the Giants keep this up? We find out next Sunday when they face the Washington Redskins at MetLife Stadium.

The New York Giants flashed brilliance and a complete lack of discipline in their win over the Titans.

The New York Giants finally broke their two month, seven game, losing streak with a win over the two win Tennessee Titans.

Being the Giants, they couldn't just come out and win. No, they had to give us flashes of a beautiful future, and lumps of horribly undisciplined ugliness.

Let's start with the bad, we'll all need the pick-me-up.

What Were You Thinking!?

Eli Manning - For most of this game Eli Manning was in control, on time, and on target. Then, as if on cue, with 8:36 to go, Eli Manning gives the Titans the only points they would score all day. He was flushed from the pocket with an opportunity to scramble. He probably couldn't have picked up the first down, but he could have given Steve Weatherford room to flip the field position. At the very last moment Eli caught a flash of Larry Donnell to his left, and tried to fit a pass in. Throwing across his body, Eli was completely unable to either throw the ball hard enough or accurately enough to get it to a well covered Donnell. The result was a pick six, and a play that a veteran like Eli Manning knows he can't try.

Interception Debacle - With 14:19 left in the ballgame, the Giants committed -- that's the only word for it -- one of the ugliest, dumbest, most undisciplined defensive sequences I, personally, have ever seen.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie starts it off with a nice play to intercept Zach Mettenberger. He immediately went in to a Deion Sander high-step. That, however was just the start. After high-stepping the return into the endzone, DRC and defensive captain Antrel Rolle launched into an elaborate and prolonged celebration that drew a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct.

But wait, there's more!

During Rodgers-Cromartie's return, sophomore defensive end DaMontre Moore shoved a Mettenberger, who wasn't even trying to get involved in the play, to the ground drawing a personal foul that wiped the touchdown off the board, and hit the Giants with a 15-yard penalty.

This is a sequence that absolutely should not happen. These guys are professionals and need to act like it. DRC's extended celebration is just stupid. It would be all too easy for an offensive player to come from behind and strip the ball. Moore's penalty is exactly the kind of thing that gives the coaches an excuse to not play him. But Rolle's actions are even less forgivable. He is the captain of the defense, one of the leaders of the team, and more than anyone else the voice of the team. He is supposed to set the tone for the team, and provide an example of how things are supposed to be done. Ordinarily he does that, though he is a bit more vocal than some would like, but here he looked more like a rookie who has never been there before. That is simply unacceptable.

The Sublime

Defensive Dominance - Once again, the Giants were involved in a shut-out this week, but instead of being on the receiving end, they dealt a defensive shut-out to the Titans. Even though the Titans are beat up, starting a rookie quarterback, and generally lacking playmakers, the defense was in fine form. They had eight (8) sacks, and four takeaways. For most of the game the Titans had fewer yards than Odell Beckham Jr. or Andre Williams (more on them later). Three Giants, Jason Pierre-Paul, Devon Kennard, and DaMontre Moore, all had multi-sack games -- something that hasn't happened in quite some time.

Giants Riding Their Scooter - Odell Beckham Jr -- who is apparently nicknamed "Scooter" -- is officially a star in this league. This game he set both a Giants record with most 100 yard receiving games for a rookie, NFL record for most consecutive 90+ yard games for a rookie. And he continues to rack up spectacular catches.

With 6:11 to go in the first quarter, Manning uncorked a 50-yard pass to Beckham. While Beckham had to use both hands to reel in the pass, it was a tremendous show of athleticism and concentration as he out-jumped a defender and secured the pass as he was tackled by his ankles. Had the defender not made the shoestring tackle, Beckham would easily have been able to run it in for the touchdown. Like so many of Beckham's plays, this one defies mere description.

Andre's Big Day- Rashad Jennings surprised by being active today, but it was another rookie, Andre Williams, who turned in the big performance. Williams racked up 131 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries (5.45 ypc). While he started slow, by the end of the game Williams was gashing the Titans for big chunks of yardage. None, however, was bigger than his 50-yard touchdown run. This was the Giants' longest touchdown run since David Wilson had a 50+ yard run back in 2012 against the New Orleans Saints. It was a third-and-1 with 12:06 left in the third quarter, and the play was a simple pitch to the outside. Williams bobbled the ball, and easily could have fumbled. However, a great block by Adrien Robinson blew open a hole for Williams, and the bobble actually slowed him down enough for his down field blocks to develop. The forced patience was rewarded as he outran a single defender on his way to the Giants' longest touchdown run of the last two seasons.

Final Thoughts

It feels good to get a win. However, that win came with some brutal reminders of why the win feels like it does. The New York Giants have been victimized by their own lack of discipline, and it reared its ugly head yet again today.

On the flip side, this team does have some talent on it. The young talent on the Giants flashed brightly today, and often enough to compensate for the Giants' darker tendencies. The 2014 season is effectively over, but going forward the Giants will need to build on those flashes of brilliance and learn how to finish games like a team of professionals.

Odell Beckham isn't the only talented young player the Giants have.

Maybe the best thing about Sunday wasn't that the New York Giants ended their seven-game losing streak by defeating the Tennessee Titans, 36-7. Maybe it was the number of young players who had an awful lot to do with the victory.

Rookie Odell Beckham starred once again, catching 11 passes for 117 yards to become the first rookie in NFL history to have six straight games of 90 or more receiving yards. Beckham added nine yards rushing, 49 yards on punt returns and threw an incomplete pass 65 yards in the air, maybe farther than Eli Manning can throw the ball. "He makes it look pretty easy," Manning said.

Rookie Andre Williams had 131 yards rushing on 24 carries, his first 100-yard rushing game. Williams' 50-yard run was the Giants' longest of the season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it's the first time in Giants history the team had rookies with 100 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the same game.

Rookie linebacker Devon Kennard had two sacks for the second straight week. He also had six tackles, two for loss, and two hits on Tennessee quarterbacks. Kennard's sack/fumble led to Markus Kuhn's 26-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Damontre Moore played extensively. He had two sacks, but also a foolish unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for a hit on Tennessee quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

Rookie guard Weston Richburg and second-year tackle Justin Pugh helped Williams to his career day, and kept Eli Manning from being sacked on Sunday.

Tight end Larry Donnell caught four passes and managed not to fumble, which is progress.

As the second half unfolded, players like Jay Bromley, Nat Berhe and Corey Washington all got at least a few snaps.

The rest of the season really is about the future for the Giants. The contributions Sunday of many of the young players had to offer some hope that the future may indeed by a bright one.

Coughlin says "starving" Giants finally get to eat.

What was Tom Coughlin's reaction after his New York Giants won Sunday for the first time in eight weeks, routing the Tennessee Titans, 36-7?

"Told the team we're gonna smile. We're gonna enjoy this," Coughlin said following his first chance to talk about a victory since Week 5. "We work hard for a win, we finally got it after many weeks of starving."

Coughlin did say he "wasn't very pleased" with the celebration by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Antrel Rolle that drew a penalty.

"That part of it bothered me, it did," Coughlin said.

Andre Williams had a career-best 131 yards rushing.

"This is definitely a special day," Williams said.

Defensive tackle Markus Kuhn scooped up a fumble and score the first touchdown of his career, and the Giants first defensive score of the season.

"That moment I probably won't forget," Kuhn said. "The most important thing is we got a win today. We had to stop up an D and we did a good job today."

Devon Kennard had two of the Giants' eight quarterback sacks."We played pretty well the last few weeks but we haven't finished," Kennard said. "Today we finally got over that hump.

"We were just fed up, man."

So, the Giants finally won a game. About damn time.

Finally, a win! A sloppy but dominant (does that even work?) win over the Tennessee Titans brings the New York Giants to a record of 4-9. For all those in the #GiantTankJob movement, this was a bit of a ding, but hell, even then, you had to have a little bit of a smile on your face.

I certainly did. A win probably hurts in the long run, but at the very least, it's going to give me a little pep in my step tonight. I don't think I'm going to call this "5 Things We Learned" at this point because we really know what this team is about. So let's call this "5 Observations":

Odell Beckham: What More Is There To Say?

We wax poetic about the greatness of Odell Beckham Jr. every week, but every week he gives us a reason to. Is there anything he can't do? Well yeah, he did have that overthrow on a 60 yard designed OBJ pass. He also had an unsportsmanlike penalty. What he also had was 9 catches, for 117 yards and a TD ... in the first half. He just couldn't be stopped. He had another ridiculous 50-yard catch to go along with a lot of underneath chain moving type plays.

He finished his day 11 receptions for 130 yards and a TD, along with one rush for 9 yards as he pretty much went on autopilot as the team just tried to kill time. He was targeted deep once in the second half, which he dropped a good pass.

A Shout-out To Andre Williams

Andre Williams has his fair share of critics here (including myself) because he has too many negative plays. However he showed his power today. He had his first ever 100-yard game rushing, mostly thanks to a 50-yard gallop in which the Titans defense parted like the Red Sea. He followed Henry Hynoski for most of the afternoon and really just put his head down and did WORK. Granted, he still had some of those negative plays, and that was that lack of vision showing, but for the most part, he was breaking tackles like a boss.

He ended his day with 24 carries for 131 yards and a TD for 5.5 yards per carry against the worst rush defense in the league. Perhaps more impressively for him, he also added three catches for 16 yards. All in all, a very nice day for the rookie.

The Pieces Are There In The Front Seven

There was pressure from everywhere as Perry Fewell opted for a more attacking style of defense. Damontre Moore had himself an up and down game, with a sack and several pressures, but also an absolutely idiotic personal foul penalty on a DRC pick six. Devon Kennard continues his torrid streak with two more sacks and several big plays against the run game. Jason Pierre-Paul had a monstrous game with a sack and several more quarterback hits/hurries. Johnathan Hankins once again was unblockable in the middle. Even Kerry Wynn and Jay Bromley showed promise getting few snaps here and there.

We've been down on this front seven all year but facing a depleted Tennessee Titan offense, the Giants were teeing off on Zach Mettenberger and eventually knocked him out of the game. In total, the Giants had 8 sacks this game. In the last two games, their sack total has reached 15. Granted, they were against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans, but still, that's impressive against anybody.

Even In A Blowout, The Giants Still Derp Away

An Odell Beckham personal foul penalty, a Damontre Moore personal foul penalty, an Antrel Rolle/Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie personal foul penalty, a Chykie Brown personal foul penalty, not one, but two delay of game penalties, one or two illegal man down-field penalties, one of the dumbest interceptions I've seen a pro football quarterback throw, and a few others were among the idiotic plays this team made on Sunday.

Will they ever have a complete, mistake-free game this season? Unlikely given the youth and the absurd amount of turnover, but more discipline is needed. This looks characteristic of a team that doesn't know how to handle success, and that's absolutely true. I don't mind some of the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for celebrating all that much. I mean, they needed something to celebrate. That Moore penalty left a terrible taste in my mouth.

The Offensive Line Does Its Job

... For once. I didn't see too many breakdowns as they were blowing holes open for Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams for most of the game. Eli Manning was also pretty much clean. Officially, the Titans defense was credited with only five quarterback hits and no sacks, so that speaks volumes about the protection they were able to afford the quarterback.

This is in stark contrast to the massacre at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars as Weston Richburg, John Jerry, and J.D. Walton had much improved games and limited the damage from Titans star Jurrell Casey. The Titans aren't some pushover either, before this game, they were ranked top 10 in the NFL in sacks. This offensive line is not good, but every dog has its day, and today, this dog was pretty damn good.

Giants end seven-game losing streak.

Even the New York Giants couldn't blow this one. Lord knows they tried after compiling a 30-0 lead with foolish interceptions, penalties, dropped passes and unprofessional behavior, but the Giants' seven-game losing streak is now over. The pitiful Tenneseee Titans were a perfect patsy for the Giants, who ended up with a 36-7 victory.

The Giants are now 4-9, while the Titans have now lost seven straight games of their own and are 2-11.

The Giants took a 23-0 lead at the half and stretched it to 30-0. From their they didn't exactly finish the way Tom Coughlin would liked. There was an absolutely atrocious Eli Manning Pick Six. There were embarrassingly unprofessional celebrations and other assorted foolish penalties from a team that obviously isn't used to having a lead. There was a physical sideline confrontation between punter Steve Weatherford and special teams coach Tom Quinn. There were dropped passes, including one by Odell Beckham that would have been a touchdown.

Still, it was a victory. The Giants first since Week 5 against the Atlanta Falcons. They'll take it.

Big Play, Career Day For Andre Williams

Sunday turned out to be a huge day for running back Andre Williams. The rookie had the first 100+-yard rushing day of his NFL career. He carried 24 times for 131 yards, the Giants' first 100-yard game by a running back since Rashad Jennings gained 176 yards in Week 3 against the Houston Texans. Williams had a a 50-yard run for a score in the third quarter, the longest rushing play of the season for the Giants.

"This is definitely a special day," Williams said.

A Record For Beckham

Beckham became the first rookie in NFL history to have at least 90 yards receiving in six straight games. He caught 11 passes for 130 yards. The franchise-record for catches in a single game is 13 by Tiki Barber against the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 2, 2000.

That's How You Open The Third Quarter

A week ago against Jacksonville an Eli Manning fumble on the Giant's second play of the third quarter gave the Jaguars a touchdown and started the avalanche that led to a stunning loss.

Sunday against Tennessee the Giants forced a three-and-out by Tennessee to start the half. On their third play from scrimmage Andre Williams took a third-and-1 pitch around left end for a 50-yard touchdown and a 30-0 lead. That was the Giants' longest run from scrimmage this season.

Oh, Eli!

With the Giants leading 30-0 Bad Eli reared his ugly head. On third-and-9 at the Giants 19-yard line Manning threw an awful Pick 6 right into the hand of Tennessee's Marqueston Huff, who ran it in for an easy 23-yard score. Manning chose to try to throw across his body to Larry Donnell rather than running, sliding and letting the Giants punt. Rookie blunder from an 11-year veteran with two Super Bowl rings. Tom Coughlin, incidentally, let Manning have it after the play.

Manning finished 26-of-42 for 260 yards. The interception dropped his passer rating to 77.5 for the game.

A First Half Juggernaut, Again

The Giants were dominant in the first half while compiling a 23-0 lead. They had 258 yards of total offense to just 62 for Tennessee. Odell Beckham had nine catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. Manning went 20-of-29 for 226 yards passing. Markus Kuhn returned a fumble 26 yards for the Giants first defensive score of the season.

Things could have been even better, however. The Giants settled for field goals three times after reaching the red zone.

Act Like Professionals, Guys

The Giants ruined what should have been a climactic pick six by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the fourth quarter by acting like juveniles.

Damontre Moore wiped the touchdown off the board with a totally unnecessary hit on Zach Mettenberger during the return. Rodgers-Cromartie and Antrel Rolle, veterans who should know better, were also flagged for acting like total fools and pretending to snap photos of each other in the end zone.

C'mon, fellas. Act like professional athletes and show a little class.

Other Numbers

The Giants outgained Tennessee, 402-207, in total yardage. They sacked Titans quarterbacks eight times. Damontre Moore, Devon Kennard and Jason Pierre-Paul had two sacks each.

What's Next?

The Giants return to MetLife Stadium next Sunday to face the Washington Redskins. Game time is 1 p.m. ET and the game will be televised by FOX. The previous meeting between the two teams, on Thursday Night Football, proved to be the brightest moment of the season for the Giants. Larry Donnell caught three touchdown passes as the Giants routed Washington, 45-14.

The Giants and Titans have reached halftime.

Well, this feels familiar. The New York Giants lead the Tennessee Titans, xx-xx, of halftime of Sunday's game in Tennessee. Can the Giants, losers of seven straight and grand inventors of unique and excruciating ways to lose football game, find a way to finish this one? The Giants, of ourse, blew a 21-0 lead last Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Use this as your second-half open thread as we all find out.

The Giants led this one, 17-0, before the first quarter was over. A Josh Brown field, goal, a 15-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Odell Beckham and a 26-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Markus Kuhn got the Giants off to the quick start.

The Kuhn touchdown, which made it 17-0, was the Giants' first defensive score of the season. Rookie linebacker Devon Kennard cause the fumble with a hit on Tennessee quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

Brown added his second short field goal to make the score 20-0 Giants with 1:39 left in the half. A 36-yard Brown field goal with :07 left made it 23-0.

The first half was largely the Odell Beckham Show for the Giants on offense. Beckham caught nine passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, including a beautiful 50-yard catch to set up a touchdown. He also returned two punts for 37 yards and threw an incomplete pass, showing off his arm by heaving a ball 65 yards in the air toward Rueben Randle.

Manning completed 20-of-29 for 226 yards and one touchdown.

Tennessee's Ryan Succop missed a 42-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.

Here, by the way, is Beckham warming up. Almost as much fun as the game itself.
