What were the Giants saying after Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers?

Five straight losses. A 3-7 record. Losses against all seven teams with winning records they have faced this season. A five-interception game by quarterback Eli Manning that flushed a great chance for an upset down the interception drain. What were the Giants saying after the game?

Here is a sampling:

Head coach Tom Coughlin on the failed series of plays from the 4-yard line that ended the Giants' chance for a victory:

"Four shots from the 4-yard line - it's inexcusable that we didn't score. You're talking about a team that's, what, sixth in the league in the green zone? We hit that ball to Larry [Donnell] a number of times and he comes back down on his shoulder and drops the ball. We tried to hit Rueben [Randle] with the first one and [Odell] Beckham with the second one. In hindsight, we should've run the ball. We've done a good job in the green zone. We've done a good job in the tight green zone. It's just that today in this particular situation - I could be standing here 17-16, but instead we're standing here with a loss."

Coughlin on where the Giants go from here:

"I was pleased and proud of the way they played. They should have their heads up. They battled. We'll have another opportunity next week. We can't feel sorry for ourselves and hang our heads. No one person in the locker room feels worse than another one. You're not going to win a game turning the ball over five times - I can guarantee you that. We need to bounce back, and now we've had a defensive fiasco; we've had an offensive fiasco. Perhaps maybe now we'll be able to go and put something together."

Quarterback Eli Manning on not scoring in that goal-to-go situation:

"You have four downs from the three-yard line, you expect to be able to score in that scenario. Disappointed, disappointed in myself. I could have thrown some better passes, some better balls. We could have made a play and gotten the lead right there."

Manning on the losing streak:

"It's tough to lose a game. It's tough to lose this many in a row, especially one like this where you felt like you were right in it. The defense played well, the offense did some good things. Get down three yards away from taking the lead and can't execute in that moment, so that's going to be hard to swallow but we've got to bounce back and figure out a way to get a win."

Defensive end Robert Ayers on the losing streak:

"The season is still going. We have six more games. That's all I care about. All I know is we have six more games and we need to try and win those. We are just trying to get it going in those six more games and we need to win them. ... Losing sucks. Winning feels great. They all hurt the same, we have to learn from it and keep moving forward. We have six more games."

Running back Rashad Jennings on a failed fourth-and-inches play in the third quarter, and the offense in general:

"I told you all before, I didn't make enough plays. The ball is in my hands and I have to make the play. ... Every play is huge because it leads to the next one. It stopped the momentum and it stopped the drive to possibly put points on the board. Our defense played very well. They kept on giving us a chance throughout the whole game. As an offensive unit, we feel like we let the team down."

Odell Beckham on why he slammed his helmet to the turf after the final play:

"I just love this game. Sometimes it’s hard to control your emotions when you’re in the heat of battle. Something I shouldn’t have done, but it is just part of the game."

Antrel Rolle on the virtual certainty that the Giants won't make the playoffs:

"We all wish to make it to the postseason. I’m not even sure right now if it’s attainable or not. This game to me is bigger than a postseason or a Super Bowl. It’s bigger than any accolades that can ever be presented to you. This game is about passion and being a competitor. Once you do that, everything else takes care of itself. The game is played for pride and for passion. We go out there and try to be the best that we can be and let the rest unfold on its own."

Coach says right tackle gave no indication during the week that quad injured vs. Seahawks last week would be an issue vs. 49ers.

When Justin Pugh left the New York Giants' 16-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers with a strained quad, head coach Tom Coughlin was miffed. Turns out that Pugh had originally suffered the quad injury last week against the Seattle Seahawks but there was no indication during the week that the second-year tackle would have any difficulty getting through the game.

"Pugh practiced all week - that was the shocker. The kid worked his tail off in practice; I don't think he ever missed a snap," Coughlin said. "Then, real early in the game ... had we had some idea that it was that big of an issue, we would've been able to control the snaps."

Without Pugh, former New Orleans Saints tackle Charles Brown was forced into action. The game marked the fifth-year veteran's first action of the regular season, and things like this happened to Manning with Brown in the game:

Manning was sacked twice, hit seven other times by San Francisco rushers and looked uncomfortable in the pocket most of the game with 49ers defenders buzzing around him. The blame for the pressure doesn't solely go to Brown, but lack of comfort in the pocket had to be part of the reason for Manning's five-interception performance.

The Giants obviously never thought Pugh's quad would be an issue. Not only did he practice fully all week, but he was never listed on the injury report.

Eli Manning threw five interceptions on Sunday, and the Manning-haters across the Internet threw a party celebrating them.

We usually do a 'five things we learned' post following New York Giants' games. After Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers, though, we can sum up what we learned in one sentence. The 'Bad' Eli Manning still exists, and the Internet loves it when he shows up.

It took 10 games of the Ben McAdoo era as offensive coordinator for that to happen, but during Sunday's 16-10 loss to the 49ers, 'Bad Eli' made a disastrous appearance. Boy, did he ever! Manning tossed five interceptions, could easily have thrown a sixth that went off the hands of a defensive back, flung a ball straight up into the air while falling down that went for an incompletion, and had a fumble.

After throwing only six interceptions in nine games, only two in the previous seven games, and playing the most efficient regular-season football of his career the past two months, Manning imploded Sunday. The Giants have been losing games this season despite the solid play of their quarterback. Sunday, they lost because of him.

"I've gotta be better, make better decisions and better throws. They're all on me," Manning said. "I'm disappointed in myself."

The Internet, though, never seems to be disappointed when Manning struggles.

That was Manning's second interception. It cost the Giants at least a field goal opportunity, since it came at the San Francisco 14-yard line. Manning said he tried to pull back rather than throw a contest pass to Rueben Randle, but ended up throwing an ugly interception.

There's always a Manning Face.

Manning himself said he "didn't expect it" after having been efficient through nine games.

The calls for Manning to be replaced as Giants' quarterback are sure to come after Sunday's miserable performance. There will be plenty of debate over whether Manning can ever really be a top-notch, winning quarterback again. There will be calls for the Giants to draft a new franchise quarterback. There is plenty of time for that, months and months in fact.

A single series decided the Giants' fate. As usual, it was an emotional roller coaster.

This looked like a game that neither the New York Giants nor the San Francisco 49ers wanted to win.

The Giants defense played their best game in weeks, but turnovers and mental errors by the offense kept the Giants from capitalizing on any plays made by their defense or -- amazingly -- their special teams.

ODB Does It Again

Despite the Giants general offensive ineptitude, Odell Beckham Jr. somehow produced a SportsCenter worthy play to get the Giants down to the 49ers 4-yard line.

With 5:12 to go in the fourth quarter, the Giants were at the San Francisco 41-yard line. It was second-and-10 and Eli Manning had just had an incomplete pass intended for Beckham. Instead of playing it safe, and playing for a 1st down or at least a manageable third down, Eli launched the ball down the right sideline.

Beckham was matched up on Perrish Cox in man coverage. Cox had good coverage, but he was simply out-leaped by the rookie receiver. The result was this:

Cox did his best, but Eli put the ball where only his receiver could get it, and Odell Beckham did Odell Beckham things and not only attacked the ball at it's highest point, but tipped the ball to himself. His concentration was outstanding as he controlled the ball and managed to come down with the ball in-bounds.

Giants Can't Capitalize

Despite Beckham's almost unbelievable catch, the Giants still couldn't get home. This isn't a single play, but rather a series of plays.

Even with four turnovers and a horrendous game by Eli Manning, the Giants Beckham's catch put them in position to win the game. Ben McAdoo then dialed up three straight fade routes. This, in and of itself is not unusual. The fade route is the Giants' go-to weapon when in Goal-To-Go situations. And usually, they win those routes.

This time, they didn't.

The first fade was to Odell Beckham on the right, who was well covered, and couldn't get enough separation to go up and get the ball.

The second fade was to Rueben Randle, however the ball was overthrown, and Randle couldn't get a hand on it.

The third and final fade went to the left again, this time to Larry Donnell, who was split out wide. Donnell was able to get the ball at its highest point, but couldn't hang on to the ball as he came down.

The Giants elected to go for it on fourth down, but Eli's final pass bounced off of Preston Parker and directly to Chris Borland for Eli's fifth and final interception.

Final Thoughts

I was tempted to put Pugh's injury on this list. While he wasn't playing particularly well, Charlie Brown was a liability who was routinely beat by rookie Aaron Lynch. Between the play of John Jerry (who not once, but twice tackled his own teammates), and Charles Brown, I'm once again forced to wonder why Brandon Mosley not only isn't starting, but is a healthy scratch, as is James Brewer, who proved to be a good option in pre-season as a backup tackle.

This was an agonizing game to watch. Nobody seemed to want to win the game, but somebody had to. The defense contained San Francisco, and put the offense in position to win the game. Odell Beckham did his best, with several fantastic catches and the Giants' best punt return in recent memory, to give the offense a spark. They just could not get it done.

The Giants need to get it together quickly, because they face the Dallas Cowboys in a week.

The Giants lost their fifth straight game on Sunday.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants tried everything they could think of Sunday, but still came up short against the San Francisco 49ers. The Giants lost their fifth straight game, 16-10, in a hard-fought but sloppily played affair.

The Giants were undone primarily by five interceptions from quarterback Eli Manning. After throwing only six interceptions in the Giants' first nine games, Manning's poor game cost the Giants several scoring opportunities and, ultimately, a chance to win.

The fifth interception came with the Giants trailing 16-10 and facing fourth-and-goal at the San Francisco 4-yard line. A Manning pass for Preston Parker was tipped at the goal line and intercepted by linebacker Chris Borland.

Two other Manning interceptions came with the Giants in position to score. One, an apparent miscommunication, came at the San Francisco 14-yard line. The other, with 9:40 left and the Giants trailing, 16-10, came at the 49ers' 21-yard line. That simply appeared to be an errant throw, also intended for Randle.

The Giants are now 3-7 and have lost five straight games.

When the game changed

Despite missing a number of opportunities, largely thanks to Manning's worst day of the season, the Giants had an opportunity to take the lead late in this game.

Odell Beckham Jr. set the Giants up at the San Francisco 4-yard line with a brilliant 37-yard catch over Perrish Cox. Beckham juggled the ball but came down in bounds with it. San Francisco challenged the play, but lost.

The Giants then tried three consecutive fade routes, one to Beckham, one to Randle and one to Larry Donnell. All fell incomplete. Manning then was forced to try to squeeze a pass in to Parker, and that ended in an interception that sealed the Giants' fate.

Head coach Tom Coughlin said it was "inexcusable that we didn't score" in that situation.

"You expect to score in that scenario," said Manning.

In retrospect, Coughlin felt perhaps the Giants should have run the ball at least once during that sequence of plays. The best chance for a completion came on the third-down fade to Donnell. The tight end got his hands on the ball, but couldn't corral it.

"I've gotta throw it a little farther out," Manning said. "Both of 'em (fades to Randle and Donnell) had good looks. We were close on both. I could have made better throws."

Stats

Manning finished the game 22-of-45 for 280 yards and a passer rating of 36.6.

Rashad Jennings carried 18 times for 59 yards in his return to action.

Randle caught seven passes for 112 yards. Odell Beckham caught six passes for 93 yards.

San Francisco gained 333 yards of total offense and the Giants had 330.

What's Next?

The Giants get the national spotlight next Sunday, hosting the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

Pugh out for remainder of game.

As if the New York Giants needed more bad injury news, they lost starting right tackle Justin Pugh in the first half with a strained quad. Pugh has been ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Pugh has been replaced in the lineup by Charles Brown.

The 2013 first-round draft pick had started every game since the Giants selected him 19th out of Syracuse University a season ago.

The Giants and 49ers have reached halftime. Here is your second-half open thread.

The New York Giants trail the San Francisco 49ers, xx-xx, at halftime of Sunday's game.

The game started well for the Giants, who took a lead on their first possession, going 63 yards in five plays after Zack Bowman recovered a Frank Gore fumble. An Eli Manning 19-yard pass to Larry Donnell gave the Giants a 7-0 lead with 6:54 left in the first quarter. It was the first time all season the Giants scored on their opening possession.

Three San Francisco field goals gave the 49ers a 9-7 lead. The Giants blew a scoring opportunity when a miscommunication between Manning and Rueben Randle led to Manning's second interception, killing a drive at the 49ers' 14-yard line with 4:42 left in the half.

Manning finished the half 12-of-21 for 139 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

The 49ers dominated first half time of possession, keeping the ball for 20:10 to only 9:50 for the Giants.
