The Giants selected Jay Bromley in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft

Jay Bromley had an interesting night planned. Expecting to be drafted between rounds four and six, the Syracuse University defensive tackle went out to the grocery store with his girlfriend to pick up some juice and a movie.

"We were going to watch 'Gravity,'" Bromley said.

But when his phone rang with Giants V.P. of Player Personnel Marc Ross on the other end, those plans were put on hold. The New York Giants selected Bromley in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft, 74th overall.

"I thought they were joking," Bromley said. "When I talked to Coach Coughlin, it was surreal, it was like man this is really happening right now. I worked so hard, it's just amazing."

Growing up, the Jamaica, N.Y. native was born and raised a Giants' fan. Getting a call from the organization he rooted for since he was a child was a dream.

"The home team, my favorite team, it's crazy. It's Big Blue," Bromley said. "Then I get picked by them? That's crazy, it's amazing."

Last season, Bromley finished third-team All-ACC as a captain for Syracuse. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound tackle recorded 14.5 tackles for a loss, 10 sacks and three forced fumbles. Giants' general manager Jerry Reese said New York views Bromley as the complete package, capable of rushing the passer and also plugging the middle.

"He's got some two-gap ability, he can stand in there at the point of attack," Reese said. "He's got speed. The guy ran a 4.9 and some change at the combine so he can get up field and finish on the quarterback.

"He can hold the point, he can run, he has some range to run lateral and make plays down the line of scrimmage."

Aside from rushing the quarterback and stopping the run, the Giants want Bromley to put on some weight. During his senior year, the 21-year-old played at 296 pounds, Coughlin and company want him between 315 and 320 pounds.

"He was around 310 and you'd like him to be a little bigger than that," Coughlin said. "He'll get back in the weight room and work and one thing he does do is work. We have no question about this kid's character, work ethic, his focus and how serious he is about the job he's about to undertake.

"Those things speak very highly about what we've tried to do throughout this draft."

'When I talked to Coach Coughlin, it was surreal, it was like man this is really happening right now.' - Jay Bromley

Each of the Giants' three draft picks thus far -- Odell Beckham Jr., Weston Richburg and now Bromley -- were captains for their teams last season. With players as Justin Tuck and David Diehl no longer with the team, the more potential leaders, the better.

"The fact that some of these players that have been looked upon as outstanding ar eleaders and we have others here that will take that role I'm sure," Coughlin said. "It's always good to have a self-starter, it's always good to have somebody that is completely devoted to their job."

Reese compared Bromley's build to that of ex-Giant Chris Canty while also saying he expects the defensive tackle to contribute right away.

"He's a big kid, he's played a high level of competition and he's a strong kid," Reese said. "He had good reps at the combine, big, clean, hardworking, tough football player. We expect him to come in and be a part of the rotation."

But before hitting the weight room, chasing down opponents quarterbacks or graduating Syracuse -- he will walk at the school's ceremony tomorrow -- is there time for Bromley and his girlfriend to watch the movie he initially set out to grab?

"It's been completely put on hold," Bromley said, laughing. "The movie's an afterthought now to be honest."

With the Giants done on Day 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft, let's take a stab at projecting the Giants' updated depth chart.

After completing their first three picks of the 2014 NFL Draft, the New York Giants have added another much-needed skill player while solidifying their trenches with a pair of linemen.

In Round 1, the Giants selected LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. with the 12th pick. After losing Hakeem Nicks to free agency, New York needed a receiver to keep defenses from entirely focusing on Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle.

Colorado State center Weston Richburg was the Giants' second-round pick (No. 43 overall), bringing a dose of versatility to a thin, still in-the-works-offensive line. Richburg was a four-year starter in college and also has the ability to pull in the running game. He could also play guard opposite Chris Snee.

Finally, the Giants concluded Friday by selecting Syracuse defensive tackle Jay Bromley with the 74th overall pick. Drafting a defensive tackle makes sense, as Ed explained, but many draft experts had other prospects listed ahead of Bromley at the position.

The fact that the Giants would select a defensive tackle here after losing Linval Joseph in free agency wasn't a surprise. The fact that that chose Bromley over several other players rated more highly on most draft big boards was a stunner.

CBS Sports had the 6-foot-3, 306-pound Bromley pegged with a sixth-round grade. Among defensive tackles bypassed by the Giants were Louis Nix III of Notre Dame and Anthony Johnson of LSU.

Bromley, who had 10 sacks and 14. 5 tackles for loss in 2013, did visit with the Giants during the pre-draft process. The explanation from GM Jerry Reese on this pick will be interesting.

Here's Big Blue View's latest projected Giants depth chart, built off the version we compiled following the Richburg pick:

So, how did the New York Giants make out on Day 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft? The Giants added depth and talent to both lines Friday, selecting Colorado State center Weston Richburg in the second round, 43rd, overall, and Syracuse defensive tackle Jay Bromley in the third round, 74th overall. Vote in the polls at the end of each post to let us know how you feel.

Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State

The Giants felt like they needed to add a center, and they did so with the versatile, athletic Richburg.

'Raptor' says:

"The Giants do in the second what everyone thought they would do in the first, address the offensive line. Weston Richburg should be able to step in and take the the starting center job immediately.

"Richburg is a good run and pass blocker with excellent quickness off the snap. He's very good at gaining position on defenders and blocking in space. He has only adequate power, but plays with good technique, so that shouldn't be an issue. Also Richburg is very durable, having started 49 straight games.

Richburg is generally thought of as a 3rd round prospect, so this could be seen as a reach for need, but he should help the inside running game and along with Geoff Schwartz and Chris Snee/John Jerry/Brandon Mosley give Eli Manning a clean pocket to step up into."

Dan Kadar of Mocking The Draft:

Following a stellar Senior Bowl where he was the only person who could block Aaron Donald, Richburg was moved up to the top of our center rankings. First and foremost, Richburg is a technician. He plays with proper hand use and keeps a good base. Richburg isn't the type of center who will drive a lot of defenders to the ground, but he also won't get pushed back. In addition to center, he's also capable of playing guard.

Jay Bromley, DT, Syracuse

Most analysts figured the Giants would eventually add a player to their defensive tackle rotation. Hardly anyone figured it would be Bromley at this point in the draft, not with a number of more high-profile defensive tackles remaining on the board.

'Raptor' says:

"The Syracuse connection strikes again. The Giants add some much needed depth to their defensive line and passrushing firepower with the DT from 'cuse.

"Jay Bromley has excellent size and length at 6'3, 306 with long arms and big hands. He's a dangerous passrusher leading The Orange with 10 sacks in 2013. He has an impressive burst off the snap while still being stout at the point of attack.

"Bromley has generally been seen as a 3rd day prospect, but he has similar physical gifts as more highly rated defensive tackles. He should slide in nicely beside John Hankins and provide a good interior pass rush without giving up much against the run."

Kadar says:

"Bromley is a good gap-shooting defensive tackle. He could develop nicely next to Johnathan Hankins for the Giants. Bromley has a good first move and generates a nice initial burst. He was incredibly productive for Syracuse. He didn't grade out higher because he doesn't always play with proper technique. He'll often let blockers into his body, and that neutralizes his power."

The Giants explain why they selected center Weston Richburg in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Entering into the second round of the NFL Draft, the New York Giants had question marks at both center and guard. Free-agent acquisition J.D. Walton last played two years ago, and Chris Snee is coming off an injury-riddled 2014 season.

So, the team selected a player who could play both positions. With the 43 overall pick, the Giants made Weston Richburg, a center out of Colorado State University, the latest addition to an overhauled offensive line.

"He's a versatile player and a very good athlete," Giants' general manager Jerry Reese said. "He can play guard or center."

The 6-3, 298-pound Texas native will compete with Walton for the starting position in the middle of the Giants' offensive line. Reese said the position will have more responsibility under new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo.

[More: Mike Fiammetta looks at the potential depth chart]

"(McAdoo) likes the center to be very involved with some of the protection scheme things and this guy is really smart," Reese said. "He was outstanding when we interviewed him at combine so he fits the mold of what we want."

Reese and Giants' coach Tom Coughlin talked about Richburg's ability to pull as a key reason the team elected to chose him with their second-round pick. At 6-3, Richburg has the size, but is also quick, allowing him to be successful in a zone-blocking scheme.

'All the scouts raved about this guy. He can pull, he can block the zone schemes and he can make the calls.' - Tom Coughlin

"All the scouts raved about this guy," Coughlin said. "He can pull, he can block the zone schemes and he can make the calls at the center position."

In 2012, Richburg broke his right hand. Instead of missing time, the 22-year-old simply casted-up his right hand and snapped with his left.

"That was something I take a lot of pride in because you don't see a lot of guys doing that," Richburg said. "It was tough, it was a tough kind of change, but I took it with open arms."

Richburg is the first center selected in the draft, a goal he admitted was his entering Friday evening.

"I've always been a guy from a smaller school, even though Colorado State is Division I, we're from the Mountain West so we don't get a lot of respect when it comes to going against other big-school guys," Richburg said. "It's always been my dream to be the best center in the country and today I kind of got that recognition by being the first center selected."

Where does second-round pick Weston Richburg fit on the Giants' offensive line? We look at the projected depth chart following his selection.

By selecting Colorado State center Weston Richburg in Round 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft, 43rd overall, the New York Giants bolstered their offensive line with a versatile prospect who could also see the field early as a rookie.

As Ed wrote in his first story on the pick, drafting Richburg -- a four-year starter at Colorado State -- allows the Giants to provide an immediate challenge to J.D. Walton at center. Given Richburg's ability to also play at guard, the rest of the line -- which remains unsettled aside from right guard Chris Snee and last year's first-round draft pick, right tackle Justin Pugh -- should also be pushed. Other recent draft picks still on the roster include last year's seventh-round pick Eric Herman, 2012 fourth-round pick Brandon Mosley and 2011 fourth-round pick James Brewer. Only Mosley (13 games/one start, all in 2013) and Brewer (24 games/eight starts in career) have seen game action.

Here's Big Blue View's projected depth chart for 2014, updated from Wednesday's pre-draft version to include the additions of first-round pick Odell Beckham Jr. and Richburg.

The Eagles traded ahead of the Giants in the second round to grab Vanderbilt WR Jordan Matthews during the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft on Friday night.

Maybe the Giants' selection of LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. wasn't enough to convince Chip Kelly the team was out of the market for another wide receiver.

The reigning NFL East Champion Philadelphia Eagles jumped one spot in front of New York in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft on Friday night to select Jordan Matthews, a wide receiver out of Vanderbilt. The 6-3, 212-pound Alabama native is coming off a year in which he recorded 112 receptions for 1,477 yards and seven touchdowns.

With the Giants selecting Beckham yesterday, there is a chance Philadelphia elected to jump ahead of any number of teams selecting after New York. Seattle, Pittsburgh, Washington and the New York Jets all have needs outside. The Eagles moved up from No. 54 in a swap with the Tennessee Titans. Philadelphia also surrendered a fourth-round pick, No. 122, to move up and select Matthews.

Matthews is viewed as a wide receiver who has good length and is a big target who runs good routes. NFL.com cited Matthews as a target with "soft hands and sticky fingers."

The Giants have made their second-round pick. They have taken Colorado State center Weston Richburg

The New York Giants selected Weston Richburg Friday night in Round 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Most analysts, including Jesse Bartolis of Big Blue View, anticipated that the Giants would look to bolster either their offensive or defensive line on Day 2 of the draft. Jesse's post included several of the players he felt were possibilities for the Giants in the second round, and Mocking The Draft's list of the best players still available.

Richburg was my selection for the Giants in Round 2 of the Big Blue View Community Mock Draft. With only free-agent J.D. Walton, who has not played a down since suffering a serious ankle injury early in the 2012 season, at the center position this was a pick that made sense for the Giants.

Here is what I wrote when I made the Richburg selection in the Community Mock Draft:

As many wonderful things as general manager Jerry Reese has accomplished in free agency this offseason, the most questionable decision Reese made was to hand free-agent center J.D. Walton a two-year, $5 million contract and pencil him in as the starting center. Walton was not good as the starter for the Denver Broncos in 2010 and 2011, began to show improvement in 2012, but suffered a serious ankle injury four games into the season and has not appeared in a regular-season game since.

Walton might work out just fine, but counting on it without a safety net is a huge risk. As of now, the Giants don't really a Plan B at the position.

Whether Walton works out or not, the Giants now have their center of the future in place. Richburg can also play some guard, a versatility factor the Giants always like.

Giants' general manager Jerry Reese explained the selection of Richburg this way:

"Centers are very important, a very integral part of our new offensive scheme, so obviously we brought J.D. in as a free agent but we tried to create some depth there as well and some competition," Reese said. "This guy is a really good, athletic center. He's one of those guys, one of those bonus guys. Not a lot of centers can pull, this guy can snap the ball and pull and get out on the perimeter. He was terrific. He was an ideal pick for us, a clean pick."

Here is what SB Nation's Colorado State blog, Mountain West Connection, wrote upon hearing the news that the Giants had selected Richburg:

Richburg was a main reason that the Colorado State's running game was amazing with Kapri Bibbs rushing for over 30 touchdowns, and getting to a bowl game. Also, what makes Richburg standout as a center is that he was asked to pull at times and he did that well, and he was a four-year starter for Colorado State.

Here is part of what 'Invictus' wrote in his Richburg prospect profile:

Richburg fits right in. He's got the movement skills and pass protection ability to be a starter at the next level for this team.

Here is what SI.com said about the pick:

The Giants signed J.D. Walton to a two-year deal earlier this offseason, but Walton has not played since 2012. In other words, the Giants had to add a center to compete for the gig at some point. Richburg fits the bill and then some. He can play in the middle or kick out to guard and hold his own there, so the Giants should be able to get him on the field early.
