Phinsider editor Kevin Nogle offers some thoughts on what type of person he believes John Jerry to be.

As much as I hate to belabor the New York Giants' signing of former Miami Dolphins offensive lineman John Jerry -- we have already covered the news from several angles -- there is just a little more fodder for discussion I would like to bring you.

During my conversation on Friday with Kevin Nogle, editor of SB Nation's Dolphins web site, The Phinsider, I asked specifically about Jerry's involvement in the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal and what type of person Nogle thought Jerry was. Here is what Nogle told me:

"I think he just joined in the group, and it's portrayed poorly. Would I be surprised if he were suspended for a game, no because of the publicity of the story and the league looking to make a statement. But, I don't think he is a bad guy by any stretch of the imagination, and he should not get crushed by the league at all. It was actually a little of a surprise that he was even included in the report. Pouncey and Incognito weren't a surprise," Nogle wrote in a series of Twitter responses.

Some people are leaders, and in the case of leadership gone wrong, ringleaders. It sounds like Jerry is neither, rather it sounds like the 27-year-old is a follower who got led down the wrong path.

Is he really a bad guy? We will find out. As the Miami Herald wrote when the Giants announced the signing of Jerry, "If you can play, you can play. That's the NFL way, and it was proven yet again Friday."

The Giants had a glaring need for an experienced reserve offensive lineman, especially one with the ability to be at least a short-term fill-in at more than one position. Jerry, with 45 career starts (42 at right guard, 3 at left tackle) in 57 games, could fill it.

GM Jerry Reese said Friday that the Giants "did our homework on John ... We were satisfied with the answers we got about John as a player and person."

None of this means Jerry will have carte blanche in the Giants' locker room. Certainly the Giants will hope that Chris Snee, Geoff Schwartz, Justin Pugh and others can lead Jerry toward a better path and toward reaching his potential as a player. As I wrote Friday, I have to believe Jerry will be on a short leash. If anything about his attitude or behavior troubles the Giants, he probably won't be around very long.

I know it isn't easy to do, but let's forget all the Wells Report stuff when it comes to newly-signed offensive lineman John Jerry for just a minute. What can the 6-foot-5, 335-pound four-year veteran do for the New York Giants on the field?

Kevin Nogle of SB Nation's Dolphins' web site, The Phinsider, wrote this after hearing news of the signing:

Jerry was a solid player, but was never dominating in his time with the Dolphins. He was able to do his job for the most part, but would often leave fans wanting more from the starting right guard. He's a player who still could reach a higher level of play, but has seemed content with simply holding on to his starting position.

Via Twitter, Kevin went into more depth on Jerry as a player.

"He's a good, solid player who has the potential to be something special, but just doesn't seem to have the desire to reach that potential," Nogle wrote. "Every year, competition was brought in for him, and every year, he would win the position - but it was always a battle.

"Biggest knock is his weight. He has problems keeping it down - especially in the offseason."

Jerry seems to fit the profile of under-30 players with some untapped upside that GM Jerry Reese has been searching for this offseason. He has experience at both right guard and left tackle, two positions where the Giants need coverage for players coming off injuries. Chris Snee (hip/elbow) is penciled in at right guard and Will Beatty (broken leg) at left tackle.

A look at some of what was said in the Wells Report regarding the involvement of new Giants lineman John Jerry in the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal.

Now that the New York Giants have signed offensive lineman John Jerry, one of the ex-Miami Dolphins players named in the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal, let's look at some of the things written about Jerry in the report.

What I am going to do here is simply quote the report. I am not going to rehash the entire Martin, Richie Incognito, Mike Pouncey, Jerry mess. You guys judge for yourselves. And please, keep it as clean as you can.

Martin traced the onset of what he considered to be verbal harassment to around the first game of the 2012 season, when, according to Martin, John Jerry began to call him a "bitch" repeatedly, in what Martin said was a disrespectful and demeaning tone. Martin reported that at one point, Jerry dared him to "say something back," and soon after he did not, the insults escalated, with Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey routinely calling him a "bitch" as well as a "faggot," a "cunt" and a "pussy."

Martin acknowledged that profanity is often thrown around casually by college and professional football players. He said he was not surprised or bothered to hear vulgar words directed at him from time to time. In his view, however, Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey repeatedly and frequently hurled profanity at him, and not in a joking manner, but in a demeaning tone, a view the evidence supports.

Jerry, according to Martin's testimony in the report, was also a participant in inapporpriate remarks made regarding Martin's sister.

According to Martin, after learning that he had a sister, Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey started making repeated graphic sexual remarks about her. ... According to Martin, when it came to what he considered to be verbal abuse, Incognito was usually the ringleader and Pouncey and Jerry tended to be followers, but Jerry was the worst offender with respect to his sister, because once Jerry got started he often kept going incessantly. Martin also claimed that Jerry (more than others) frequently made such insults in front of teammates from other units, including in the showers and in the team cafeteria; Martin viewed this as a calculated effort by Jerry to embarrass him.

Jerry is also quoted in the report.

"We all joke like that. Some days it would be me getting joked on, some days it would be someone else." He also asserted that jokes about Martin's sister were made only occasionally. Further, Jerry downplayed the highly obscene nature of the offensive line's banter, in contrast to Incognito, who frankly 77 admitted that the language he and his teammates used was frequently extremely vulgar and likely to shock most outsiders.

Valentine's View

The Giants have always been, and will continue to be, a class organization. There is nothing in the release announcing the signing mentioning Jerry's involvement in the bullying scandal, but I think it's safe to assume that the Giants have done a ton of homework regarding the Martin situation and what type of person Jerry is.

This tweet just came out from Paul Schwartz of the New York Post:

I would also have to believe it is safe to assume that Jerry will be watched closely throughout OTAs and the preseason, and that he will be on a short leash.

Seeking veteran depth depth on their offensive line, the New York Giants today announced the signing of former Miami Dolphins offensive lineman John Jerry.
Chris Snee is the Giants' incumbent right guard (despite missing the last 13 games in 2013 because of hip and elbow injuries that required surgery). Left tackle Will Beatty is recovering from a broken leg suffered in the season finale on Dec. 29.

Jerry is one of the Dolphins players who was involved in the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal with the Dolphins, along with Dolphins' teammates Richie Incognito and Mike Pouncey.

Jerry, 6-foot-5, 335 pounds, was a third-round draft choice by Miami in 2010. He had a -2.9 Pro Football Focus grade in (2013 (+6.8 pass blocking, -10.4 run blocking) and a -2.7 grade in 2012 (+3.8 in pass protection, -8.8 in run-blocking).
