'Kudos & Wet Willies' review of Sunday's Giants-Raiders game.

It is a happy Monday for the New York Giants after Sunday's 24-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders. Let's review what went right, and what went wrong, in our traditional 'Kudos & Wet Willies' style.

Kudos To ...

Andre Brown -- So much for easing Brown back into action. Brown carried a career-high 30 times for 115 yards in his first action game of the season after suffering a fractured leg in the preseason finale. Brown ran hard, and he ran decisively. How is this for a stat that tells you about the Giants' running game? Brown, after one game, is 39 yards behind Brandon Jacobs (154 yards) for the team lead in rushing yardage.

Damontre Moore -- His first-quarter block of a Marquette King punt led to a Cooper Taylor scoop and score touchdown,

Terrell Thomas --The cornerback continued his inspiring comeback story with a game-changing third quarter interception. With the Giants trailing 20-14 and Oakland at the New York 33-yard line threatening to take a two-score lead, Thomas left his man, broke on a slant intended for Denarius Moore, picked the ball off and ran 65 yards to the Oakland 5-yard line. The only thing he couldn't do was score, failing to outrun Oakland quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Antrel Rolle -- Rolle had 12 tackles, including a touchdown-saving takedown of Rashad Jennings on an 18-yard run in the third quarter, and a sack for the second straight week. Rolle is not only leading the Giants' improved defense with his words, but with his play.

Jason Pierre-Paul -- Pierre-Paul looked more like vintage JPP on Sunday than he has at any other time this season. He bull-rushed left tackle Khalif Barnes for a sack of Pyror, only his second of the season. He had four tackles, one for loss, and a hit on Pryor, as well. For the first time this season Pierre-Paul was really a force to be reckoned with coming off the edge.

Keith Rivers -- The Giants have moved Jacquian Williams into the lineup in place of Spencer Paysinger. Before the game I was wondering why Rivers, a veteran whose play has been uninspiring, is in the lineup instead of Paysinger. Sunday, Rivers played what might be his best game in two seasons with the Giants. He had eight tackles, a sack, and was part of a concerted effort by the Giants to stay outside of Pryor when he scrambled, keeping him from getting to the edge and making plays with his legs.

Our Veterans -- Today, of course, is Veterans Day. Personally, I am off to watch my son march in a Veterans Day parade. Find your own way today to thank, and honor, those who have served our nation and protected our freedom. 'Kudos' to all who have served.

The New Orleans Saints -- For pounding the Dallas Cowboys, 49-17, Sunday night. That leaves the Cowboys at 5-5, and still within range of the Giants in the NFC East.

Wet Willies To ...

Special Teams Overall -- A game-opening turnover by Jerrel Jernigan. Terrible kickoff coverage. A partially blocked punt. An atrocious display of punting by Steve Weatherford. Awful judgment in punt returns from Rueben Randle -- who catches a punt over his head at the 2-yard line while backpedaling? The Giants could build a movie-length film of this season's special teams' follies, and this week's contributions are just more of the same.

Things were so bad that when Oakland kicker Sebastian Janikowski kicked the ball through the end zone fans at MetLife Stadium cheered. It's impossible to screw up an unreturnable kick, so the cheers were pretty much out of relief.

Steve Weatherford -- What is going on with Weatherford. Amazingly good for two seasons, the Giants' punter has been amazing this season only in his inconsistency. Forget the blocked punt, that wasn't his fault. His other punts, however, were terrible. He did hit a 51-yard punt, but that was an awful, low punt that included 20 yards of roll. The best thing that you can say about Weatherford's day is that none of his punts were returnable.

Jerrel Jernigan -- When the home crowd is cheering the opposing kicker for NOT giving you a chance to return the ball things are bad. You keep waiting for Jernigan, a third-year player who seems to have the speed and shiftiness to be a good return man, to grab the role. He keeps finding ways to make the Giants look elsewhere. Want a telling note about the state of the Giants' return game? After Jernigan coughed up the opening kickoff the Giants kept sending him back there. They apparently trust rookie Michael Cox even less.

Giants' Pass-Blocking -- As good as the run-blocking was in a season-best 133-yard running game, the pass-blocking was equally as bad. Eli Manning was sacked three times and hit five on five other occasions, including being absolutely crushed on the pick six he threw. That means Manning was hit eight times in 25 drop-backs, and that just isn't acceptable.

Giants' Screen Game -- This week's screen abominations were a fumble by Peyton Hillis and an incompletion on a play where Andre Brown never even got out of the backfield to receive the pass and Manning ended up getting blasted into the turf by an Oakland defender. Maybe the Giants should just take the screen out of the playbook until they have a quarterback who can throw it and a running back who knows how to execute it.

Final Thoughts

This Giants' team may never win a pretty game. Of course, the Giants have played very few pretty football games in my 53-year lifetime. They may never play a complete game, either. They simply can't seem to get through a game without some sort of offensive breakdown or special teams meltdown. Victories, however, are victories. The Giants have three straight, and have a belief that they can do what no one has done before -- make the playoffs after starting a season 0-6.

I didn't give Eli Manning a 'Wet Willie,' but Manning again was less than stellar. The pick six he threw came on a pass wide receiver Victor Cruz said he was surprised came in his direction, and after the interception coach Tom Coughlin chose to run out the first-half clock in a spot where he usually turns Manning and the offense loose. The Giants didn't protect Manning well on Sunday, but he still needs to be better.

Finally, it's hard to believe that a season that started 0-6 can turn out to be an enjoyable one. If the Giants can get past the Green Bay Packers next Sunday, and the Packers will be starting third-string quarterback Scott Tolzien, things certainly do become interesting. A game at MetLife Stadium vs. the Cowboys looms in two weeks.

A look at the most important plays in the Giants victory over the Raiders on Sunday.

It might not be the most impressive three-game win streak in recent memory, but three wins is three wins. The New York Giants took care of the Oakland Raiders at home with a 24-20 victory on Sunday in a game that they tried very hard, but failed to give away. The Giants are still, miraculously, in the playoff hunt in the NFC East and get to take on an Aaron Rodgers-less Green Bay Packers this upcoming Sunday -- a game where a victory would put them one game behind the Dallas Cowboys when they meet up in two weeks. Let's take a look at the five biggest plays that decided the game.

Although I could say the biggest key play was activating Andre Brown.

Giants-Raiders Hub Page

Complete coverage of the giants' victory over the Oakland Raiders.

Damontre Moore blocks a punt attempt that is returned by Cooper Taylor for 6 points

The special teams are awful all the way around. Josh Brown has missed easy field goals, Steve Weatherford has struggled to punt the ball consistently long all year, the kick return game is not much of a threat without David Wilson, the coverage teams have given up way too many big returns, the punt return team is among the worst in the league every year. But there is one bright spot, Damontre Moore. Hopefully one day this kid will be a major player on the defensive line, but for now Giants fans will have to settle for him being a force on special teams -- even as a gunner at times. On the opening kickoff Moore made the tackle that saved the touchdown off Jerrel Jernigan's fumble and then here he created points for the Giants off the punt block, which is the first time in a very long time (if I can remember the graphic correctly first time in 408 games and I think 1988).

Rueben Randle catches a 5-yard fade for a touchdown

Rueben Randle makes a catch that Hakeem Nicks had made a living on over the past couple of years and what Randle will need to perfect if he's going to replace Nicks moving forward. Randle showed good field awareness getting both feet in. Randle now leads the team in touchdown receptions with 5, and has 423 yards receiving, which are solid numbers for a number three receiver. The only No. WR who has clearly better numbers would be the No. 3 receiver of the Broncos (is it Welker or Decker?).

Antrel Rolle makes a touchdown saving tackle that leads to a Raiders field goal

The return of Terrell Thomas and the emergence of Trumaine McBride has given the Giants enough confidence in their cornerback group this year that they have moved Antrel Rolle to safety nearly full time as opposed to a pseudo safety/nickel cornerback/extra linebacker. And he has responded by making plays week in and week out -- he has two sacks and three interceptions this year to go along with 53 tackles and 6 passes defensed. Those are all (not the tackles) highs for him as a New York Giant.

Terrell Thomas picks off Terrelle Pryor and nearly returns it for a touchdown (and nearly fumbles it out of bounds for a touchback).

The Giants secondary is big plays this year while also not giving up big plays every week. Since Perry Fewell has become coordinator the Giants secondary has made a lot of big plays, but unfortunately they have also allowed a lot of huge plays (it seemed like Corey Webster was a major contributor to that). This year the Giants have only given up 25 plays of 20 or more yards through the air (sounds like a lot, but it's the seventh-fewest in the league). Last year they gave up 60 (fourth-worst in the league). This is even more impressive when you factor in the Giants inability to rush the quarterback.

Mathias Kiwanuka forces a Pryor fumble that is recovered by the Giants.

There was 3:28 left in the game with the Raiders only trailing by four points on a third-and-10. Pryor dropped back where he was met by Mathias Kiwanuka who forced a fumble that was recovered by Cullen Jenkins. The Giants were then able to use their new-found running game to run the clock out and secure the victory.

Final Thoughts

Things still look bleak for the Giants, but the thing that I like about this year is so far this is a team with resiliency. They are just bad on the offensive line, and Eli Manning is playing shell-shocked (bailing out too early on throws, missing throws he has made many, many times in the past), but they have heart. They started 0-6 and have won three in a row. You can only ask that your favorite team plays hard like they care as much as you do as a fan and it's clear these Giants want to succeed. Hopefully that will lead to big things either this year (seems unlikely) or moving forward into next season.

Brown carried 30 times for 115 yards and one touchdown as the Giants defeated Oakland, 24-20.

Going into Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders the New York Giants' plan seemed to be to ease running back Andre Brown, making his first appearance of the season after suffering a fractured leg, back into action.

Well, so much for that. Brandon Jacobs was inactive because of knee and hamstring injuries. Peyton Hillis coughed up a fumble without being hit in the first quarter. And there was Brown, churning out carry after carry.

Brown ended with 30 carries for 115 yards, both career highs.

"It just speaks to what he's done since he's been down as far as working to get back, to be ready," said center Jim Cordle. "I don't think that was the plan at all. Andre stepped up, it's unbelievable."

"He came back and he definitely provided a spark to this offense," said right tackle Justin Pugh. "We just got on guys up front and he made us look good. You want to get down field and you want to finish your block because you know all it's going to take is one little hole and he's going to take it and go."

' 'Dre was tremendous. Hats off to him, man' - Hakeem Nicks

"'Dre was tremendous," said wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. "Hats off to him, man. This is what he needed, a great game. He waited patiently, he worked his way back from his injury and now he's back and he showed us something."

"You could tell all week he was excited to be back to be back on the field, worked his butt off in practice all week and he ran hard today," said fullback John Conner. "We saw it ahead of time, we knew what he's capable of."

"Guys know what kind of player he is from last year," said guard Kevin Boothe. "We knew that he'd be ready to go go today. Speaks volumes of his conditioning and his preparation."

"Thirty carries is a load for anybody, but that's the type of dude he is," said linebacker Jon Beason. "He's been down, he's been a guy who stayed the course throughout his career. He went out and played well."

What did we learn from the Giants' 24-20 victory over the Raiders? Here are some thoughts

The New York Giants believe they are in the NFC East race. They believe they can do what no other NFL team has ever done, go from 0-6 to the playoffs.

"Any time your in it, keep fighting," said middle linebacker Jon Beason. "You finish. It doesn't matter. 0-5, 0-6, mathematically we're still in it. You just get the first one and winning begets winning. 0-6 has not been done, but why not be the first to do it?"

The Giants still have weaknesses on offense and special teams, and they still struggled mightily on Sunday to beat an Oakland team that -- frankly -- has no offense whatsoever. The one strength they do have, however, is a resolve to go forward, a tremendous belief that they can get it right.

"Even at 0-6 we still felt as though we could still climb out of the hole we were in. We still are in the hole but obviously it feels good to have three in a row here and two more games in a row at home," said Justin Tuck. "We're starting to play with a lot of confidence and that's something that hopefully we can continue to build on and continue to get back in this race."

What else did we learn today? Really, we didn't learn much that we didn't already know. We did, however, see more evidence of many things we were already pretty sure of.

[Game Recap]

Andre Brown is a difference-maker

Brown's contribution, 30 carries for 115 yards, is more than anyone could have expected. In recent weeks Brandon Jacobs and Peyton Hillis have helped the Giants' running game. Brown showed something Sunday that neither Jacobs nor Hillis has -- speed and explosiveness. It's no shocker that Brown will be earning 'Kudos' On Monday morning.

The Giants' special teams are terrible

Let's exempt DaMontre Moore. The blocked punt by 'DaMonster' in the first quarter that led to a 21-yard scoop and score by Cooper Taylor is the only reason the group wasn't a total embarrassment for the day.

-- Jerrel Jernigan coughed up the opening kickoff, helping the Giants into a 7-0 hole before the game really even started. The MetLife Stadium crowd actually cheered when Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski kicked the ball out of the end zone, preventing Jernigan from running it back.

-- Steve Weatherford punted four times for an average of 30.3 yards and had one partially blocked. He didn't hit a solid punt all day.

-- Rueben Randle foolishly caught a punt at his own 2-yard line while backpedaling and reaching above his head. He was fortunate to return it to the 15-yard line.

-- The Giants gave up kickoff returns of 41 yards and 36 yards.

Maybe the Giants should just send Moore out there by himself. Nobody else is getting anything productive done.

Terrelle Pryor is the new Tim Tebow

Pryor is a terrific running back trying to play quarterback. He is a horrific passer. Oakland does everything it possibly can to keep Pryor from having to throw the ball more than 5 yards down the field. Pryor went 11-for-26 for 122 yards with an interception and a fumble. He had a passer rating of 40.9. His few long throws were awful, and even his short ones weren't exactly on target.

The Giants' defense is good

Yes, Pryor is a terrible NFL passer. Yes, Josh Freeman is a terrible NFL quarterback. Yes, the Giants took advantage of an injured Michael Vick and an inexperienced Matt Barkley. Still, one touchdown allowed in 14 quarters is impressive. That touchdown, of course, came on a 5-yard drive by Oakland after Jernigan's fumble. That is hardly something the defense can be faulted for.

The Giants, with the help of a false start penalty, held the Raiders to a field goal after a first-and-goal from the 1-yard line in the third quarter. Terrell Thomas made a game-changing interception and 65-yard return in the third quarter with the Giants trailing, 21-14. They scored a touchdown to take a lead and never looked back.

The Giants sacked Pryor three times, forced a fumble and id a great job of keeping Pryor from getting outside the pocket while he was scrambling, holding him to 19 yards on five carries. More often than not they forced him to throw, when you know the Raiders would rather have seen him run.

Oakland had only 213 net yards and 12 first downs.

It wasn't pretty, and the New York Giants tried every way they could think of not to win Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. In the end, however, the Giants did manage to defeat the Raiders, 24-20, at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants fumbled the ball away twice, handing Oakland 10 points. Eli Manning threw a pick six. Steve Weatherford had a punt blocked. Yet, the Giants (3-6) outlasted the Raiders (3-6) in a battle that came down to which team end up hurting itself the least.

Andre Brown was the star for the Giants, carrying 30 times for 115 yards.

Manning completed 12-of-22 passes for 140 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

"We're finding ways to win and that's nice and obviously we've won three in a row but we still have to figure some things out," Manning said. "We still have to play a little bit better."

The Giants defense has now surrendered only one touchdown in 14 quarters extending back to the first half of Week 6 vs. the Chicago Bears. The Giants intercepted Oakland's Terrelle Pryor once and recovered a Pryor fumble late in the fourth quarter. The Giants held the Raiders to a field goal after Oakland drove to the New York 1-yard line during its opening possession of the third quarter.

The game turned in the third quarter. Just when things were looking like they might get away from the Giants with Oakland leading 20-14 the defense came up big again. Oakland got the ball at the Giants' 48-yard line following a 27-yard punt by Steve Weatherford. On third and nine at the Giants' 33, Terrell Thomas interceptied a Pryor pass for Denarius Moore and returned the ball to the Oakland 5-yard line.

"It was a big play for us," Thomas said. "We needed it. It was a route that they had run a lot and I was waiting on it all game. They run two-by-two slants and coach put us in a great position and I I was just happy to make a play for our defense."

The Giants capitalized, taking a 21-20 lead with 2:15 left in the third quarter when Brown scored from 1-yard out, following a jarring block on the edge from fullback John Connor. The Giants never trailed after that.

The Giants extended the lead to 24-20 with 8:04 left on a 23-yard field goal by Josh Brown. That capped off a 13-play, 70-yard drive that took 6:56.

The Giants' defense snuffed out Oakland's final chance when Mathias Kiwanuka forced a Pryor fumble that Cullen Jenkins fell on at the Oakland 45-yard line with 3:28 to play. From there, the Giants' offense was able to run out the clock.

[First half open thread]

The Giants trailed 17-14 at the half despite allowing the Oakland offense only 99 total yards. Giants' turnovers handed Oakland all 17 of its points. A Jerrel Jernigan fumble on the opening kickoff led to a touchdown less than a minute into the game, Eli Manning threw a pick 6 to Tracy Porter and a Peyton Hillis fumble led to a Sebastian Janikowski field goal.

"We knew we could win this game," said wide receiver Rueben Randle. "Despite the three turnovers we were still in the game, only down three. We knew just control the ball, go out there and make some plays and we could come out with the victory."

They did just that.

What It Means: The Giants are, ridiculously, alive in the NFC East at 3-6. The Green Bay Packers saw Seneca Wallace, subbing for the injured Aaron Rodgers, leave their game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday with a hamstring injury. The Giants could be hosting a Green Bay team next week down to its third quarterback who, right now, is Scott Tolzien. It also means the Giants will be rooting -- hard -- for the New Orleans Saints to defeat the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Boxscore Hero: Andre Brown carried an incredible 30 times for 115 yards and a touchdown in his first game of the season.

Next Week: The Giants will host the Green Bay Packers at MetLife Stadium. That game starts at 4:25 p.m. ET.

The Giants trail Oakland at the half. Use this for your second-half open thread.

The New York Giants are trying exceptionally hard not to win a third straight game. The Giants trail the Oakland Raiders, 17-14 at the half, and have gifted Oakland with all of its points. The homestanding Giants were booed off the MetLife Stadium field.

Two Giants' fumbles deep in their own territory and an Eli Manning pick six accounted for all of Oakland's scoring. The Raiders have only 99 yards of total offense and look completely unable to pass the ball. Terrelle Pryor is 3-of-12 for 27 yards.

The Raiders took a 10-7 lead after one quarter, thanks mostly to the generosity of the Giants.

The Giants quickly spotted the Raiders a 7-0 lead when Jerrel Jernigan fumbled the opening kickoff. Andre Holmes of the Raiders recovered and Oakland went 5 yards in two plays with Terrelle Pryor sneaking from a yard out with 14:07 left in the first quarter.

Damontre Moore got the Giants even with 9:22 left in the first quarter. Moore blocked a Marquette King puntand Cooper Taylor scooped it up and ran 21 yards for the touchdown.

Oakland took a 10-7 lead with 3:21 left in the first quarter on a 33-yard field goal from Sebastian Janikowski. That was set up when Peyton Hillis fumbled a screen pass and Oakland's LaMarr Houston recovered at the Giants' 21-yard line.

The Giants took a 14-10 lead with 7:36 left in the second quarter when Eli Manning hit Rueben Randle for a 5-yard score. The play capped an 11-play, 90-yard drive that consumed 6:22.

Oakland took a 17-14 lead with 1:18 left in the half on a pick 6 by Tracy Porter, who grabbed a Manning pass intended for Victor Cruz and went 43 yards for an easy score.
