The Giants routed the Eagles Sunday, but missed a playoff berth when the Chicago Bears defeated the Detroit Lions.

The New York Giants entered Week 17 no longer controlling their own destiny and with nearly 400 residents from Newtown, CT. to play for. They gave them a great game to watch, stomping on the Philadelphia Eagles, 42-7.

The Giants finished the season 9-7, and will miss the playoffs. The Chicago Bears' 26-24 victory over the Detroit Lions knocked the Giants out of the playoff picture.

Eli Manning had a tremendous game throwing for 208 yards and five touchdowns. Ahmad Bradshaw also ran for 107 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown.

The Eagles tried to set a tone and opened the game with an onside kick which they recovered. On a third down conversion, Michel Vick saw a six man rush and tried to get a pass off, which was picked off by Stevie Brown and returned for 48 yards. David Wilson started at running back and ran for two first downs. Eli Manning eventually found Rueben Randle in the back of the endzone for the touchdown to start the game 7-0.

On the Giants second drive of the game, Ahmad Bradshaw saw his first snap of the game, running for 15 yards. Then Manning finds Randle down the field once again, this time beating Nnamdi Asomugha for 38 yards, for his second touchdown of the game bringing the score to 14-0.

On the third offensive drive, Manning found Bradshaw for a 41-yard reception, then Wilson picked up a first down to set the Giants up for a score. That score came from Wilson when Manning found him in the endzone for the touchdown.

On the following kickoff, LeSean McCoy ran the kickoff back to the Giants 44-yard line. Vick converts a 4th and 10 to keep the ball in the Eagles hands. On 4th and 1 Vick finds Jeremy Maclin in the endzone for the touchdown making the score 21-7.

On the following drive, Manning looked to Randle down the field, but the Eagles were flagged for illegal contact giving the Giants five yards and a first down. Bradshaw runs for two straight first downs, then Manning finds Victor Cruz for a first down, setting the Giants up again. Bradshaw then rushes the 1-yard touchdown to make the score 28-7.

The Eagles with 28 seconds left tried to convert another fourth down, but Will Hill was able to make the big stop just before the first down. Manning then connects with Victor Cruz for the touchdown just before the half making the score 34-7.

After a very quiet third quarter, neither team puts up a score. However, in the fourth quarter, Manning finds Henry Hynoski in near the pylon for a touchdown. Finally, we see the Hynocerous touchdown dance, which brings the score to 42-7. The Giants take victory formation on their next offensive drive to officially end the game.

Early kudos:

David Wilson and Rueben Randle - For working their butts off and getting the offense started early

Eli Manning - Welcome back!

Henry Hynoski - Had some of his best blocking today, and scored his first career NFL touchdown on his birthday

Ahmad Bradshaw - It's amazing what happens when you follow the Hynocerous

Defensive tackle Chris Canty (knee) and cornerback Jayron Hosley (quad) are among the inactive players today for the New York Giants as they face the Philadelphia Eagles.

That means that safety Kenny Phillips, wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, running back Ahmad Bradshaw, defensive end Justin Tuck and cornerback Prince Amukamara -- all battling injuries of varying types and degrees -- will suit up today. Tuck (shoulder) and Phillips (knee) did not play last week against the Baltimore Ravens. Amukamara played only four snaps last week and may only be dressed for an emergency.

The complete list of inactives for today is below:

Ramses Barden, Jayron Hosley, Tyler Sash, Ryan Torain, Adewale Ojomo, Adrien Robinson, Chris Canty.

The interesting name on the list is Barden. The fourth-year wide receiver has been inactive two weeks in a row now, with second-year man Jerrel Jernigan getting the nod. You have to wonder if we have seen the last of Barden in a Giants' uniform.

Here is a look at the three games that matter to the Giants on Sunday -- other than their own -- if they are going to make the playoffs this season.

If the New York Giants are to make the playoffs -- and Cool Standings gives them only a 4.7 percent chance of pulling that off -- they have to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday and hope the Dallas Cowboys lose or tie and the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears also both lose.

That is a lot of hoping. Let's look at each of those games.

Chicago Bears (9-6) at Detroit Lions (4-11)

The Bears still have a shot at a playoff berth, while the Lions have little or nothing to play for. They have had a miserable season, and wide receiver Calvin Johnson has already broken the record for receiving yards in a season. I wouldn't be too optimistic about the Lions rising up and winning this one.

Line: Chicago -3
Game Time: 1 p.m.
TV: FOX

Green Bay Packers (11-4) at Minnesota Vikings (9-6)

This is a compelling game. The Vikings need a win to get into the playoffs, and Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson needs 102 yards rushing for a 2,000-yard season and 208 yards to break the single-season record. He racked up 210 yards the last time the Vikings and Packers played. You know Green Bay doesn't want to surrender the record, and the Packers are also playing for a first-round bye.

Line: Green Bay -3
Game Time: 4:25 p.m.
TV: FOX

Dallas Cowboys (8-7) at Washington Redskins (9-6)

It is really going to be hard to stomach watching these two teams play for the NFC East title, especially if the Giants are already eliminated by the time the game starts Sunday night. The best Giants' fans can hope for is that the Giants are still alive when the game begins, and that they can root for a Washington victory.

No matter what happens on Sunday the New York Giants are still in better shape than many of New York's sports teams.

Sunday is a weird day for fans of the New York Giants.

It is the final day of the 2012 NFL regular season, and unless an amazing series of events converge in just the right way this will be the last day you can refer to the Giants as 'defending Super Bowl champs.'

Yet, there is still that small glimmer of hope. That teeny, tiny possibility that the Giants can beat the Philadelphia Eagles today and that the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears can all lose. In that case you get to hold onto your dreams of the first repeat championships in franchise history just a little bit longer.

No matter what happens today, and into the playoffs if the Giants are fortunate enough to get there, remember this -- things could certainly be a lot worse.

All you have to do is look around the New York sports scene to see that for yourself.

Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks are riding high, leading the Atlantic Division of the NBA and giving their fans real hope for the first time in a decade or more. Look around the rest of New York's teams, though, and it's a messy, mostly broken wasteland.

The New York Jets? A complete joke. Does Rex Ryan want to coach them or not? Gang Green Nation is already lining up replacements. They have three quarterbacks, none better than ... David Carr. Which means they really don't have any quarterbacks who can play. They have no clue what to do with Tim Tebow, except trot him out for reporters to talk to. They have nothing to build around.

The Brooklyn Nets? Moved to a fancy new building, generated a lot of buzz and started fast. Then they remembered their roots, started playing like the New Jersey version of themselves and got Avery Johnson fired.

The New York Yankees? The paupers in the Bronx apparently have no money to spend. If you see GM Brian Cashman on the street corner throw a couple of nickels in his coffee mug. The Yankees seem to need them.

The New York Mets? They just traded away Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey. Spin that any way you want, good teams don't have to do that.

The New York Red Bulls? The 2012 season was another one that ended short of where their talent said they should go, and the team is in the process of being gutted.

The New York Rangers, Islanders and New Jersey Devils? Yes, we remember that their used to be a league called the NHL. Fans of those teams, though, don't even have games to get upset about.

So, Giants' fans, things aren't that bad -- no matter what today's outcome is. The Giants haven't had a losing season since 2004. They have a quality general manager and head coach who understand the headlines you WANT to make have to do with winning, and have proven they know how to build teams that can do that. The Giants have a franchise quarterback in Eli Manning and a franchise defensive player in Jason Pierre-Paul.

The Giants still have a lot going for them -- a whole lot more than most of the other teams around these parts.

Everything you need to know about today's Week 17 NFL game between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.

The New York Giants enter their regular-season finale today in a desperate situation. They have to beat the Philadelphia Eagles and hope a bunch of other dominoes fall their way in order to reach the playoffs. If things don't fall exactly right the Giants will miss the playoffs a season after winning the Super Bowl.

There is plenty of time -- perhaps too much time -- to discuss all of the things that have gone wrong. For now, let's focus on the Eagles. Here is a breakdown of today's 1 p.m. ET game, which will be televised on FOX.

The Storylines

For the Giants, it's simply whether or not they make the playoffs. They need to win, then hope the Dallas Cowboys lose or ite, and the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears both lose. Playoffs or not, can they at least play a good football game after being embarrassed 67-14 over the past two weeks.

For the Eagles, is this the swan song for quarterback Michael Vick and head coach Andy Reid?

Key Players

Giants

1. Eli Manning -- Which Eli will show up? That is a question we have had to ask too often this season.

2. Corey Webster -- The Baltimore Ravens targeted Webster 14 times last week and he was helpless. The Giants could be without Prince Amukamara and Jayron Hosley Sunday, which actually might be good news for Webster since the Eagles will have Justin Tryon to pick on.

3. The entire defense -- This is cheating, I know, but after surrendering 67 points the last two weeks and looking atrocious it would be nice of the group actually showed up today.

Eagles

1. Michael Vick -- Really, Vick is the player who will be story of this game for Philadelphia. This will be his last game with the Eagles. Does he make it memorable for Eagles' fans with a signature performance that might make him some money next season? Does he implode and remind everyone why he got benched in the first place?

2. Andy Reid -- I know, he is the coach and not a player. My guess, though, is there will be a gazillion sideline shots of Reid followed by speculation about whether or not this is his final game as Philly coach. It seems likely that it is.

Quotable

We understand exactly what we need to do. I think the pressure is off of us a little bit. We've just got to go out there and play football. I feel like there's no pressure for us. We've just got to go out there and take care of business and we understand that.

-- Victor Cruz

Mood Music

I am not sure this is the right song for today, but since it is the last time we might see this core group of Giants together I chose to offer this for your listening pleasure today:
