David Wilson had the best game of his young career Sunday, leading the Giants to a 52-27 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

When the New York Giants drafted David Wilson in the first round last April they were hoping his speed and play-making ability would make a difference in their offense. It is hard to imagine they could have expected results like they got Sunday in a 52-27 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Wilson set a single-game franchise record with 327 yards of total offense. He had 227 on kickoff returns, including a 97-yard return for a touchdown. He scored touchdowns on runs of 6 and 52 yards, and totaled 100 yards rushing on 13 carries. That's three back flips, and three times the Giants cringed and wished he would stop doing that to celebrate scores. Sunday, though, they needed every one of them.

Until Sunday Wilson's opportunities had been limited. Wilson fumbled in the opening game of the season and his carries have been infrequent since. After Sunday's performance it seems unlikely that will be the case any longer.

To come out and have a breakout game like this it's an excellent feeling," Wilson said. "I didn't have the greatest start for a rookie, and rookies have little room for error. I was put in position where I had to gain the coaches trust again, I stuck with it and kept working. I knew eventually my opportunity would come again."

When it did, in a game that was an absolute shootout with the Saints until the final few minutes, Wilson took full advantage.

Wilson said that during the week he could sense that the Giants might have some opportunities in the run game. He said that coach Tom Quinn, rather than give him an assignment sheet as he usually does, just told him to "run fast." Obviously, he did.

The Giants 287 yards in kickoff return was a single-game franchise record. The Giants also have now established a franchise record for kickoff return yardage in a season, almost exclusively Wilson's doing.

"I don't know what took him so long," said defensive end Justin Tuck. "He's probably the best athlete on this team.

'You saw flashes of it early in the year. Tonight he was amazing. Now it's on tape, we're going to expect that from him every game."

Rookie running back David Wilson sets single-game franchise record for total offense in New York Giants' 52-27 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

On a day that saw both the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins earn dramatic victories, the New York Giants answered the bell with a huge 52-27 victory Sunday over the New Orleans Saints. The Giants (8-5) maintained their one-game NFC East lead with the victory.

This was a breakout game for rooking running back David Wilson. He returned a kickoff 97 yards for a score, carries 13 times for 100 yards -- including touchdowns of 6 and 52 yards -- and had 227 yards returning kickoffs. His 327 yards of total offense is a single-game franchise record. The Giants also set a single-game franchise record with 287 total yards in kickoff returns.

This one resembled an Arena Football League game with the teams going up and down the field at a frenetic pace. The Giants, however, took advantage of four New Orleans turnovers, two interceptions by Stevie Brown and fumble recoveries by Antrel Rolle and Linval Joseph, in addition to Wilson's kickoff return score.

The game started poorly for the Giants' offense. A 58-yard kickoff return by David Wilson, giving the Giants the ball at the New Orleans' 45, was wasted by a three-and-out.

After a New Orleans' turnover, a fumble by Marques Colston that was recovered by Antrel Rolle -- again at the 45 -- Eli Manning threw a third-down interception that Elbert Mack returned 73 yards for a score.

Wilson then returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to knot the score at 7-7.

Linval Joseph then recovered a fumble after a reception by New Orleans fullback Jed Collins to once again set the Giants up in Saints' territory. The recovery put the ball at the New Orleans' 35-yard line. Four plays later Manning hit Martellus Bennett for a 6-yard touchdown, giving the Giants a 14-7 lead with 4:19 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Saints drove 81 yards in 14 plays for a 32-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley to cut the lead to 14-10 with 9:46 left in the half. .

Wilson, having a great day returning kickoffs, returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards to the New Orleans' 46. Lawrence Tynes missed a 36-yard field goal attempt wide left after the Giants' drive stalled at the 19-yard line.

Following Tynes' miss the Saints drove 67 yards in eight plays. Hartley hit a 25-yard field goal to make the score 14-13 with 1:57 left in the half.

The Giants then drove 69 yards in nine plays with Manning hitting Domenik Hixon for a 5-yard touchdown on a fade route with 20 seconds left in the half, giving the Giants a 21-13 lead.

The Giants opened the second half with a Stevie Brown interception on New Orleans' first play from scrimmage, setting the Giants up at the Saints' 20-yard line. Four players later Wilson, starting the second half for Bradshaw, powered six yard off left tackle to give the Giants a 28-13 lead with 13:04 left in the third quarter.

The Giants stretched their lead to 35-13 with 8:13 left in the third quarter when Manning capped a six-play, 62-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Nicks.

The Saints responded with a three-play, 75-yard drive for a score to make it 35-20 with 7:21 left in the third quarter. Darren Sproles ran 13 yards for a score, a drive set up by a 62-yard pass to Josh Morgan.

On the next drive the Giants drove into Saints territory before Manning threw his second interception of the day, giving New Orleans the ball on its own 32. The Saints took advantage, going 68 yards in six plays for a touchdown. Brees hit Sproles for a 9-yard score, making it 35-27 with 1:51 left in the third quarter.

Jernigan then set the Giants up at New Orleans' 25-yard line with a 60-yard kickoff return as the Saints kicked away from Wilson for a second straight time. Five plays later a 10-yard pass from Manning to Cruz made th score 42-27 with 14:20 to play.

Brown ended a Saints' drive with an interception inside the 10-yard line, his second of the half, and returned it 70 yard sto the New Orleans' 22 with 11:50 remaining. A 39-yard field goal by Tynes with 10:19 remaining made the score 45-27, putting the Saints in a position to need three scores to take the lead.

Wilson salted the game away for the Giants with 5:10 to play, going 52 yards around left end for a touchdown that made the score 52-27.

The New York Giants hold a 21-13 lead over the New Orleans Saints at halftime of Sunday's game. Oh, but it could be so much more.

The Giants have started five drives on their own 45-yard line or better, four of those in Saints' territory, and scored just 10 points on those drives.

Still, with the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins having won earlier, they need a win to stay in first place in the NFC East. Right now they are in position to get one.

Manning's pass was intended for Jerrel Jernigan, who appeared to slip on the play.

The first quarter ended with the Giants leading, 14-7.

The Saints drove 81 yards in 14 plays for a 32-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley to cut the lead to 14-10 with 9:46 left in the half. New Orleans held the ball for 5:44.

The Giants overcame a pair of penalties on the drive, an offsetting pass interference penalty that negated a catch by Hakeem Nicks, and a holding penalty on Ahmad Bradshaw.

Safety Kenny Phillips (knee) will not play today for the New York Giants against the New Orleans Saints. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, however, will play today. Also, linebacker Jacquian Williams -- who has not played since Week 6 -- will be in uniform today for the Giants as they try to hang onto first place in the NFC East.

Phillips played for the past two weeks after missing six games, but his troublesome knee will keep him sidelined. That means Stevie Brown will start at safety. Without Phillips and Sash the Giants are unlikely to employ much of their three-safety package. Williams, a solid cover linebacker, could play significant snaps if his knee will allow.

A special treat for you today -- and, truth be told, mostly for me.

If things look a touch unattended here at Big Blue View for a while this morning, there is a good reason for that. I will shortly be en route to MetLife Stadium for today's New York Giants-New Orleans Saints game.
I had to mention it because this marks the first time the Giants have allowed me into the press box for a regular-season game. So, big day for me. Be back later from MetLife.

Everything you need to know about today's game between the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints.

The New York Giants (7-5) need a victory Sunday against the 5-7 New Orleans Saints to stop the bleeding from losing three of their last four games. With the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys entering the day just one game back of the Giants a victory is critical.

Let's take a look at what you need to know before kickoff.

The Basic Stuff

Game: Giants (7-5) vs. Saints (5-7)
Time: 4:25 p.m. ET
Where: MetLife Stadium
TV: FOX
Line: Giants -5

Key Players

Saints

1. Drew Brees -- Torched the Giants for 363 yards passing and four touchdowns last season. The Giants need to figure out a way to make the Brees who threw five interceptions last week show up rather than the one they faced a year ago.

2. Jimmy Graham -- Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys caught 18 passes in a game against the Giants earlier this season. Graham has 59 catches and 8 touchdowns, and slowing him down will be a critical part of what the Giants need to do on Sunday.

3. Steve Spagnuolo -- Yeah, I know. Not a player. Spagnuolo, though, is the former very popular and successful Giants' defensive coordinator. Since he is currently running the Saints' defense it will be interesting to see what he throws at Eli Manning, offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and the rest of the Giants' offense.

Giants

1. Eli Manning -- Manning is pretty much always on this list. The Saints have a total of 97 points the last two times the teams have played. Even if the Giants slow down New Orleans somewhat it figures that the Giants are going to have to put up a large number of points to win this one. Which means Manning will need to be sharp.

2. Jason Pierre-Paul -- JPP says the Giants have been "soft" on defense. Well, he could be talking about himself. He has only 6.5 sacks on the season after having 16 during an All-Pro season last year, and has none in the past three weeks. He needs to be a force.

3. Jacquian Williams -- After not playing since Week 6 it sounds like the second-year linebacker expects to play on Sunday. The Giants will need Williams' speed and athleticism against New Orleans' tight end Jimmy Graham, especially with starting safety Kenny Phillips (knee) doubtful and backup safety Tyler Sash already listed as out with a hamstring injury. How much, and how well, can Williams play?

The Storylines

You know this stuff already, but let's go through it. The Giants have put themselves in a precarious playoff predicament, letting their once comfortable NFC East lead over the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins shrink to one measly game. Tom Coughlin says the Giants need to win out, which may or may not be true depending on the Cowboys and Redskins, but certainly would be nice. They definitely need to beat the 5-7 Saints.

New Orleans is scuffling through a year filled with distractions of their own making, and hanging onto playoff hopes by a thread. Still, this is a scary opponent for the Giants. The Saints dropped 49 points on the Giants last season, and 48 in 2009. That's absurd, and the Giants can't let it happen again.

The Predictions

Funny fellas, Mike and Jared. I wonder if they made these picks together.

Quotable

"I think we look soft. I think we’ll get there, man. We haven’t played our best game this year. I know, for a fact, we haven’t played that game. ... We’re all not playing together. When you’re on a team, in a position like this, you have to play together as one. Otherwise, you’ll keep going downhill."
