Here is a look at some of the plays that helped the Giants beat the 49ers on Sunday.

I thought about renaming this weekly segment for this past week New York Giants vs San Francisco 49ers: Four Great Quarters, but I'll settle for five key plays.

1. Prince Amukamara intercepts Alex Smith in the first possession of the second quarter

In the 49ers' first two possessions they were able to move the ball very well and keep the Giants; offense off the field. Prior to the Amukamara interception the 49ers had the ball for roughly 10 of the first 15 minutes of the game and were starting another drive. The 49ers had a chance to really begin to wear down the Giants' defense before the game really started, but Smith tried to make a big play and instead found the rapidly improving Amukamara. After the interception the Giants would complete a huge play down the field to Domenik Hixon and put their first points on the board.

2. Hixon makes a huge play down the field to lead the Giants to their first score

Play 1 and play 2 go hand-in-hand, but were big plays in terms of ending the 49ers momentum. Prior to these two plays the 49ers had dominated the time of possession and looked to be winning the physical battle. Plus, the Hixon catch was just very exciting to watch.

Also, I would like to officially apologize for writing Hixon off prior to the season. I didn't think the Giants needed him at wide receiver, I was wrong. I'll eat this crow. I have no problem telling you when I was wrong about something (but only because I'll also have no problem tooting my horn. Like here when I told you David Wilson was the running back you wanted in the draft. Though I undersold him).

3. David Wilson is amazing

My man crush for David Wilson is growing by the week. He just looks like he is playing at a different speed than the rest of the team. The play I'm specifically thinking here is the 66-yard kickoff return to start the second half which led to another Giants' score. That was after Wilson had a 44-yard return negated by a Jacquian Williams penalty. This kid is electric. He can catch the ball better than he's shown, too, and I can't wait until he gets a chance to make an impact in the screen game. I should stop chatting about Wilson, I'm drooling on my keyboard.

4. Antrel Rolle intercepts Alex Smith on back-to-back 49ers possessions

I know it's early, but so far this looks like this could be the best first three rounds of a draft that the Giants have had under Jerry Reese -- and the reason for that is Jayron Hosley. This guy is terrific. The Giants have favored big, athletic cornerbacks, which has left them vulnerable in the slot where Antrel Rolle has spent too much of his time, but Hosley is different. Super competitive and athletic. Hosley fits the slot position very well.

The selection of Hosley has let Rolle play more of a safety who can come up and play the run, but also ball hawk in the back end and hopefully these two interceptions are just the beginning from Rolle this year.

5. 9:06 left to go in the fourth quarter Giants hand the ball off to Ahmad Bradshaw for 13 yards

The following plays: 11-yard run by Bradshaw, 11-yard run by David Wilson, 4-yard run by David Wilson, 4-yard run by David Wilson, 20-yard run by David Wilson, 3-yard run by Bradshaw, 5-yard run by Bradshaw, no-yard run by Bradshaw, -3 yard run by Wilson, 4-yard run by Wilson, -5 yard run by Wilson. Field goal by Lawrence Tynes.

7:10 taken off the clock. This is man's football. Welcome back, Giants fans have missed it. Game over.

This was an impressive performance from the Giants and any number of plays could be highlighted, but these five were key to me. Let me know in the comments what your five plays were, and then we'll start moving onto the next opponent, the Washington Robert Griffins, err, Redskins.

The question now is, with everyone likely picking the Giants this upcoming weekend against the Washington Redskins, will they be able to compete with the same intensity to start putting some distance between themselves and the rest of the NFC East?

New York Giants fans know the drill: Sometimes they struggle against mediocre teams and play up to par against better teams ... and sometimes they just struggle.

The Giants didn't struggle at all this past Sunday when they defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 26-3, at Candlestick Park. This was their first meeting in the Bay Area since the NFC Championship Game and the 49ers were hoping for some revenge. Instead, the Giants just reminded them why they have the Super Bowl XLVI rings.

The Giants were completely dominant in all aspects: offense, defense, and special teams. The special teams made only one error, when Bear Pascoe missed his block causing one of Lawrence Tynes' field goals to get blocked. That didn't turn out to matter in the end. The rookie David Wilson had another good day returning kickoffs. He opened the second half with an exploding 66-yard kickoff return to put the Giants into position to score a 1-yard Ahmad Bradshaw touchdown.

Speaking of Bradshaw, he had another solid outing running for 116 yards on 27 carries, his longest run for 23 yards. Bradshaw is just the second player to score a rushing touchdown against the 49ers this season, and is also the second running back in 44 games to have 100 rushing yards against them. Wilson also had seven carries for 35 yards.

The Giants' offensive line also looked very dominating throughout the entire game. Eli Manning was not sacked once and the rushing for Bradshaw came a lot easier thanks to some great blocking by Will Beatty, Henry Hynoski, David Baas, Martellus Bennett, Sean Locklear, Kevin Boothe, Chris Snee, Pascoe and yes, David Diehl.

Manning was 15-for-28 with 193 yards and a touchdown to end the day. Thanks to a solid offensive line he was able to move in the pocket and find time to throw to his targets Victor Cruz and Domenik Hixon.

As great as the offense excelled, it was the defense that shined in this rematch.

The Giants sacked 49ers quarterback Alex Smith six times, Jason Pierre-Paul accounting for two of them. Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck were even able to get to the quarterback on Sunday after a disappointing first few weeks. Linval Joseph, Adrian Tracy, and Mathias Kiwanuka also had sacks.

The secondary also had a very powerful day picking off Smith three times. Prince Amukamara nabbed his first interception of the season. He also recorded three passes defended and six tackles. The Giants were looking for the game where their 2011 first-rounder would stand out, and he shined on Sunday.

Antrel Rolle also joined the turnover party picking off Smith the other two times for 42 yards. Rolle also made six tackles on Sunday and the Giants were able to get two field goals in result of Rolle's interceptions.

The Giants may struggle some weeks and make games either exciting or heart-wrenching, but it's nice to see what they did this past Sunday. This is the kind of the football the Giants should be playing every week.

The Giants play the Washington Redskins next Sunday at 1 p.m. hoping to get their first division win of the season.

New York Giants' coach Tom Coughlin praised his team's defense on Monday.

New York Giants' coach Tom Coughlin praised his team's defense on Monday, the day after an impressive 26-3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

"We played outstanding defense, let's face it. We played a team that had been on fire and we played very well, very sound, didn't give up a lot of big plays, gave some up, but hung in there and battled and scrapped and got three critical turnovers," Coughlin said.

Entering the game the Giants had been struggling defensively, not getting to the quarterback and giving up too much yardage against the run. So, what changed against the 49ers?

"I think it's the quality of the team we played against. There wasn't any question that we were going to have to be at our very best if we were going to have a chance to win.," Coughlin said. "We played hard, we ran the right plays at the right time, we had some extremely timely plays, I thought. We had six sacks in the game; we hadn't had many going in. We kind of rose up and played well."

Injury Updates

Coughlin said "the plan right now" is for defensive tackle Chris Canty (knee) to come off the PUP list. That, however, does not mean Canty is guaranteed to play Sunday against the Washington Redskins. Travis Beckum (knee) is also eligible to come off the PUP list, but Coughlin did not mention plans for the tight end. As for safety Kenny Phillips, Coughlin said the team will have to "wait and see" to determine his status. Phillips (knee) has missed the last two games.

There are no 'Wet Willies' this week, only 'Kudos' following the Giants' 26-3 thrashing of the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

It is time for our 'Kudos & Wet Willies' review of the New York Giants' 26-3 dismantling of the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Let's get this out of the way right now ... there will be no 'Wet Willies' this week. Unless I want to hand out WW's to some of the 49ers I can't really find any reason to hand out any.

So, let's get started with this's edition of 'Kudos, Kudos & More Kudos.'

Kudos to ...

The Bodyguards -- What? Bodyguards? Has Ed lost his mind? No, I haven't. The Bodyguards are the big boys up front on the Giants' offense, including the fullback and tight ends. By name they are linemen Will Beatty, Kevin Boothe, David Baas, Chris Snee and Sean Locklear, tight ends, Martellus Bennett and Bear Pascoe, fullback Henry Hynoski and even extra lineman David Diehl.

These guys did a phenomenal job keeping Eli Manning well-protected all day. No sacks and not a lot of hits. This group also wore down a San Francisco defense that usually does that to opposing offenses. It really was amazing to watch the 13-play, 72-yard fourth-quarter drive by the Giants that took 7:10 and for all intents and purposes ended the game. Twelve straight running plays (yes, 12) and no passes led to a 32-yard Lawrence Tynes field goal. I mean, who does that in the NFL in 2012? More to the point, who does that to the 49ers?

Ahmad Bradshaw -- Took advantage of all of that great blocking to gain 116 yards on 27 carries, with 16 of those carries and 93 of those yards in the second half. You have to wonder what Brandon Jacobs, in street clothes on the other sideline, was thinking while watching that.

Eli Manning -- Not a great game statistically for Manning, but he did complete nine straight passes in the second quarter to help the Giants turn the game over. Also, did a great job handing the ball off to Bradshaw and David Wilson in the fourth quarter.

The Defensive Line -- Tom Coughlin said "I think the defensive line finally decided they were going to come to play today and they did." Indeed. Jason Pierre Paul had a pair of sacks. Linval Joseph had a sack and four tackles, two for loss. Osi Umenyiora had only one tackle and one quarterback hit, but it seemed like he was in the backfield all day. Adrian Tracy -- yes, Adrian Tracy -- had four tackles and a sack in just 12 snaps. Mathias Kiwanuka, playing a variety of spots along the defensive line -- even on the nose a few times -- had a sack and a tackle for loss.

Antrel Rolle -- Two interceptions, both on good catches, two passes defensed and six tackles.

Prince Amukamara -- An interception, three passes defensed and six tackles. Yes, it looks like the Giants' Prince has come.

Lawrence Tynes -- Made four field goals, and it probably would have been five with a little better blocking at the end of the first half.

Victor Cruz and Domenik Hixon -- Six catches for Cruz and one salsa dance. Hixon continues to play better than could have been expected, with four catches for 78 yards. A couple of those were high degree of difficulty grabs, too.

David Wilson -- His 66-yard kickoff return set the tone for the second half. He also carried seven times for 35 yards, with the explosiveness, determination and ball security he showed on those runs practically screaming at Coughlin "I demand more carries."

Coaching Staff -- Coughlin always seems to know when to push the "no respect" button with this team. He did it again last week, and it worked. The Giants can make you crazy playing down to mediocre, or worse, teams. Credit goes to Coughlin, though, for making this team believe there is no football game it can't win. Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride had a terrific day. How often do we hear criticism of Gilbride for abandoning the run too quickly. Not Sunday. In a game where no one thought the Giants could dominate the game by handing the ball off, that is exactly what they did. Two tight ends, an extra lineman, the fullback on the field for nearly half the offensive snaps (32 out of 65) the Giants simply challenged the 49ers' defense physically and beat them up. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell similarly deserves credit. He unleashed Tracy, which no one could have expected. He used Kiwanuka on the defensive line frequently, moving him all across the front. He did the same with Pierre-Paul, moving him inside and out. There seemed to be more stunting along the line than usual. Also, give Fewell credit for designing coverages that held San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis to three inconsequential catches.

If I wanted to quibble ...

I said I would not give out any 'Wet Willies,' and I won't. If I wanted to quibble, though, there are a few things that need to be mentioned.

Amidst all the great work by the defensive front with six sacks and I have no idea how many hurries, as well as pretty good run defense, the name Justin Tuck does not even appear on the stat sheet. Tuck played 40 of 61 defensive snaps without registering even an assist, though he did get one quarterback hit. How does that happen?

Rolle did, as Troy Aikman rightly pointed out, let Randy Moss run right by him for a long completion. Can't let that happen when you are in complete control of a game.

Reuben Randle returned two punts for a total of two yards. Most importantly, though, he handled four punts in all without incident.

What was Bear Pascoe doing on the blocked field goal? Bear, dude, you have to do more than just watch the guy come around the edge.

Why did Coughlin call timeout with 15 seconds left in the first half? The Giants had the ball, they were in field-goal position and the clock was running. The Giants could have let the clock tick down to the final couple of seconds and then tried the field goal. Maybe I missed something, but I would love for someone to explain to me what seemed like some uncharacteristic clock mismanagement there.

The Giants' 26-3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers was shocking because of the way the Giants did it -- beating San Francisco at what it does best.

The story this morning isn't that the New York Giants defeated the San Francisco 49ers Sunday at Candlestick Park. The story is how the Giants did it, physically manhandling the team that is supposed to be the NFC's most physical squad en route to a shockingly easy 26-3 victory.

- Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 116 yards, the first time since 2009 a visiting back had rushed for 100 or more yards against the 49ers at Candlestick.

- The Giants sacked Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick six times.

- Eli Manning, sacked six times in last season's NFC Championship Game, was never sacked in this one and was rarely touched.

Here is what SI.com's Jim Trotter wrote:

Do not be fooled by the score. The game was not as close as the 23-point margin, which marks the worst loss in the Jim Harbaugh era in San Francisco. New York (4-2) did to the 49ers what no team has done since Jim Harbaugh arrived as coach last year: It beat them physically, rushing for 126 of its 149 yards in the second half. That was more yards in one half than 22 of San Francisco's previous 23 opponents had run for in a game, including the postseason.

Bradshaw, in need of an IV, checked out of the game in the closing minutes and let David Wilson again flash that impressive speed. By that time the 49ers needed more than an IV. They needed to search for their identity because, on this day, the Giants stripped them of it.

The 49ers are a team that relies on physical domination, running the football on offense and imposing their will on teams with a suffocating defense.

Sunday, the Giants simply jammed the ball down San Francisco's throat -- especially in the second half -- and a defensive front criticized in recent weeks spent much of the day in the 49ers' backfield.

"I think this is our most complete game all year long, against a very, very worthy opponent," said safety Antrel Rolle, who had two interceptions. "I think all three phases of the game did an exceptional job, offensively, defensively and special teams."

The numbers of the quarterbacks in this game are instructive. Eli Manning went 15-for-28 and passed for only 193 yards. Be honest, who thought the Giants could go into San Francisco and win a game with Manning passing for less than 200 yards? The Giants dominated in so many other areas, though, that Manning could play like, well, Alex Smith, and the Giants still won easily.

The 49ers on the other hand had to ask Smith to play like Manning often does, and that didn't happen. Smith went 19-for-30 for 200 yards and three interceptions -- each, to be honest, on balls that were thrown horribly.

Coach Tom Coughlin called the victory "a start in that direction" of becoming the kind of team the Giants were at the end of last season.

That is a hard statement to argue with. I doubt the 49ers would take issue with it today.

Giants' coach Tom Coughlin said his team played with "great purpose" Sunday in routing the San Francisco 49ers, 26-3.

Sometimes when you watch the New York Giants you wonder if it is a team that would be diagnosed as one that has multiple personalities. The Giants who showed up in San Francisco Sunday were the 2012 playoff Giants, the ones who marched through six straight opponents en route to a Super Bowl title. Not the same Giants who fell into a 14-0 hole last week against the Cleveland Browns.

"We're a good football team. We came out here with great purpose," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "Players were very excited to play this game."

Coughlin said the Giants "withstood the storm" early in the game, surrendering only three points while the 49ers were dominating.

Coughlin referenced the running of Ahmad Bradshaw, whose 116 yards was, according to Coughlin, the first 100-yard game surrendered by the 49ers in 43 games, the three turnovers the Giants capitalized on and the inspired play of the defensive line (six sacks) as keys.

"I think the defensive line finally decided they were going to come to play today and they did," Coughlin said.
