The resilience they have played with all year was there, and so was the evidence of how perfect they have to be against good teams

I think I’m conflicted in terms of how to feel about the New York Giants’ 27-24 loss on Saturday to the Minnesota Vikings.

This was a hard-to-stomach loss, coming as it did on a last-play career-long 61-yard field goal by Vikings’ placekicker Greg Joseph.

With the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions both losing on Sunday it was a missed opportunity for the Giants to clinch their first playoff berth since 2016.

This ends up feeling like a game that tells you two things simultaneously.

The Giants are a team on the rise. A resilient team that simply keeps coming and promises to be a tough out for whoever they face if and when they do ultimately reach the playoffs.

They are a team that still has work to do to truly reach a championship level.

This loss was largely self-inflicted.

The Giants fumbled away almost certain points when tight end Daniel Bellinger lost the ball at the Minnesota 23-yard line on the first play of the second quarter.

They threw away likely points when quarterback Daniel Jones threw slightly behind Isaiah Hodgins and was intercepted by Minnesota cornerback Patrick Peterson at the Vikings’ 18-yard line in the fourth quarter.

They handed the Vikings seven points when the punt protection broke down and Minnesota blocked a Jamie Gillan punt to take possession at the Giants’ 29-yard line with 4:02 to play.

Richie James dropped a pair of fourth-quarter passes that would have given the Giants first downs, one forcing them to settle for a 55-yard Graham Gano field goal.

The Giants committed seven penalties, costing them 63 yards, to two penalties and 14 yards for Minnesota.

With a chance to force overtime, the Giants allowed the Vikings to complete a 17-yard screen pass to Justin Jefferson on third-and-11 from their 41-yard line with :17 to play, giving Joseph a shot at the game-winner.

Watching a 61-yard field goal sail through the uprights as time expires is undoubtedly a tough way to lose.

“You never feel good after a loss,” said Giants coach Brian Daboll.

No, you don’t. There are no moral victories. Still, it is hard not to look at some of the terrific things that happened for the Giants.

Some will disagree but the view here is that Daniel Jones was fantastic on Saturday. From the Giants’ opening drive, it was apparent they were going to be pass-first and put the game in Jones’ hands.

He completed 30 of 42 passes for 334 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Yes, the interception wasn’t a perfect throw, just a smidge behind Isaiah Hodgins. Still, Jones threw the ball 42 times, he was sacked three times and ran the ball four other times. I can’t kill him for one imperfect throw in 49 drop backs.

Jones’ 7-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Hodgins was fantastic quarterback play, patiently buying time before Hodgins came open in the end zone.

Jones led a game-tying drive, taking the Giants 75 yards in :59. The two-point conversion throw to Daniel Bellinger was, again, excellent, patient quarterback play. It was also a perfectly-placed throw.

Jones was let down by the Bellinger fumble. By two Richie James’ drops, one on a crushing third-and-5 that would have given the Giants a first down inside the Minnesota 30-yard line and instead forced a 55-yard Graham Gano field goal.

He was let down by Evan Neal’s leaky pass protection.

I don’t know how you come out of that game being critical of Jones. I come away seeing a quarterback Giants fans should feel good about.

For me, this game was more evidence that the Giants don’t need to go searching for a quarterback this offseason. They already have one. They just need to sign him without breaking the bank.

Hodgins impressed with eight catches for 89 yards, including a brilliant 29-yard catch. The Giants, by the way, had five plays of 20+ yards, four of them passing. They also had an 18-yard pass to Saquon Barkley.

The Giants had four sacks and 11 quarterback hits. I know Jefferson (12 catches, 133 yards) and T.J. Hockenson (13 catches, 109 yards) had big numbers, but I thought the defense played well overall against one of the league’s best offenses. Wink Martindale’s group needed just one more play to force overtime, and couldn’t get it against the best wide receiver on the planet.

“We went up against possibly number one, number two seed in the NFC,” Barkley said. “Just gotta lock in the little details. Learn from this. I think that’s important if we can learn from this against a really good team. Take that and use that momentum for the rest of season.”

For me, I think we learned that the Giants are indeed a good football team. They slugged it out on the road against a team that is now 12-3.

We also got a reminder of something that we discussed earlier in the season. The Giants’ path to victory remains a narrow one in which they cannot be the team making the majority of the mistakes — as they were on Saturday.

“I think in games like this against a good team, those three, four plays, you’ve got to make them. You’ve got to be able to make the big play at the critical point in the game, and we didn’t do that today,” Jones said. “We did do a lot of things well. We moved the ball well. We did make some plays. But not enough, and against a good team like that, you’ve got to make those few plays.”

We also saw the obvious areas where the Giants still need to improve their talent level — inside linebacker, the secondary, wide receiver even with Hodgins’ career game — were still problematic in at least some instances.

As you head into Christmas, though, try not to let this one drag you down.

This was a setback on the scoreboard for the Giants. It’s a bummer that the Giants didn’t find a playoff berth under their proverbial Christmas tree.

I can’t, though, let the disappointment of this one linger. The playoffs are still out there for the Giants, and it is still highly likely they will get in.

To summarize my thoughts quickly, here they are. I thought the game showed:

a) The Giants have come a long way since 4-13 a year ago and they are a good team.
b) Jones really is a good player who still doesn’t have enough support.
c) The Giants’ path to victory remains narrow, and they MUST be the team that makes the fewest mistakes.

Daboll doesn’t want to hear any of that right now.

“Give them credit. They made a few more plays than we did,” Daboll said. “You have two turnovers, a blocked punt, to be in the game at the end of the game, the guys were resilient, but you can’t have those mistakes. The fumble took away three points, interception took away at least three points, that’s minimum, and then we give the ball back to them in our end zone or in our territory [on the blocked punt] where they hit Jefferson there.”

Many of you probably don’t want to hear it, either, but as we head into Christmas I still can’t help but look at Saturday as more affirmation that the Giants are moving into a better future.

They just aren’t quite there.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Victory would have clinched spot for New York

The New York Giants missed an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 2016 with Sunday’s last-second 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The 8-6-1 Giants, though, remain in good position to reach the postseason. FiveThirtyEight now lists the Giants with a 90 percent chance of reaching the playoffs after the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders all lost on Saturday. Playoff Status gives the Giants a 94 percent chance of reaching the playoffs.

If the Giants can win one of their final two games against either the Indianapolis Colts in Week 17 or Philadelphia Eagles in Week 18 they will reach the playoffs.

The Giants currently hold a 1.5-game lead over the Seahawks and Lions with two games to play. If the Giants get to nine wins, they will finish ahead Seattle and Detroit regardless of what those teams do over the final two weeks. The Seahawks lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 24-10 on Saturday and the Lions lost to the Carolina Panthers 37-23 The Giants also hold the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over the 7-7-1 Commanders, who lost to the San Francisco 49ers 37-20.

“We’re disappointed we lost,” said quarterback Daniel Jones. “That [missing a chance to clinch] is not something we were focused on.”

The current NFC playoff standings that concern the Giants are as follows:

No. 6. Giants, 8-6-1
No. 7. Commanders, 7-7-1
No. 8 (out of playoffs) Seahawks, 7-8
No. 9 (out of playoffs) Lions, 7-8

Giants will have to wait to clinch playoff berth

The New York Giants will have to wait at least one more week to qualify for the NFC playoffs after a gut-wrenching 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday.

Minnesota (12-3) won the game on a career-long 61-yard field goal by placekicker Greg Joseph on the game’s final play. On the previous play, the Vikings faced a third-and-11, but star wide receiver Justin Jefferson earned 17 yards on a screen pass to put Joseph within range.

The Giants (8-6-1) had tied the game with 2:01 to play when Saquon Barkley went 27 yards for a touchdown on fourth-and-2, and then Daniel Jones hit Daniel Bellinger for the two-point conversion.

The Giants could have clinched a playoff berth with a victory as the Seattle Seahawks (7-8) lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 and the Detroit Lions (7-8) lost to the Carolina Panthers 37-23. They will, however, have to wait at least one more week to earn their first playoff berth since 2016.

The Giants committed two turnovers, an interception and a fumble, that took away scoring opportunities. Minnesota’s Josh Metellus also blocked a Jame Gillan punt with 4:10 to play. That set up the Vikings at the Giants’ 29-yard line and led to a 17-yard Kirk Cousins to Justin Jefferson touchdown that gave Minnesota a 24-16 lead with 3:00 to play.

The Giants also committed seven penalties for 63 yards, while Minnesota had just two for 14 yards.

“Guys were resilient but you can’t have those mistakes,” said Giants coach Brian Daboll. “The fumble took away three points. The interception took away at least three points.”

Minnesota is now 11-0 in one-score games. The Giants are 8-3-1 in those games.

Stats

Daniel Jones completed 30 of 42 passes for 334 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He also ran four times for 34 yards.

Saquon Barkley carried 14 times for 84 yards, including that 27-yard touchdown run. Barkley also had eight receptions for 49 yards.

Isaiah Hodgins had eight receptions for 89 yards.

Richie James had eight receptions for 90 yards, but had two critical fourth-quarter drops.

Injury updates

Edge defender Azeez Ojulari was ruled out after suffering an ankle injury in the first half. Ojulari had a sack and tackle for loss before leaving the game. He has had at least a half-sack in four straight games. Ojulari, who dealt with quad injuries earlier in the season, has played in only six games.

What can we take away from the Giants’ oh-so-narrow loss to Minnesota?

The New York Giants fell just short of the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16, losing 27-24 Saturday on a game-ending career-long 61-yard field goal by Greg Joseph.

This was an incredibly competitive back-and-forth game between two resilient, hard-nosed teams that are used to playing close games. There were stretches throughout the game where it felt like either team could seize control, and neither team was really able to do so. Ultimately, it could only be a happy holiday for one team, and that turned out to be the Vikings.

So what can we take away from the game before we have some holiday cheer?

First down: About the Giants’ receivers

There’s going to be plenty of digital ink spilled over Daniel Jones’ play today, and I don’t want to dwell on him.

This game felt like the quintessential “Daniel Jones Experience”.

The view here is that this might have been Jones’ best game as a pro, but his good play also highlighted why I continue to have reservations about him.

The Giants didn’t ask him to do anything particularly involved and he executed well. He made some very pretty and legitimately impressive throws. But he also put the ball in danger too much (something he’s done a lot more than the box score reflects, it’s jus that this time the potential turnovers stuck), and his placement continues to be maddeningly inconsistent.

But those inconsistencies allowed for some incredibly impressive plays by the Giants’ receivers.

Isaiah Hodgins, in particular, stepped up and had a career game and made Patrick Peterson looked like a washed-up has-been at times. He was incredibly reliable throughout the game and came up with one of the biggest plays of the game when he hauled in a deep pass that was at the ragged edge of his catch radius for 29 yards.

Richie James had the one big drop and wasn’t able to haul in another pass that was low and behind him. However, he also had a very impressive game and came up big throughout the game with chunk plays to keep the Giants ahead of the chains.

Fans might feel sour on James right now, but he was still the Giants’ leading receiver. James finished with eight catches on 12 targets for 90 yards, many of which helped set up big plays by his teammates.

Darius Slayton and Daniel Bellinger had good games as well, with Slayton’s speed in the open field turning a short pass into a 32-yard gain to set up Saquon Barkley’s touchdown run, and Bellinger showing fantastic field awareness to secure the two-point conversion without drifting out of the back of the end zone.

Nobody is saying the Giants’ receivers are great. But they’re solid players who deserve to be active on an NFL offense. Between Wan’Dale Robinson, Slayton, Hodgins, James, Collin Johnson, and Bellinger, the Giants have the makings of a solid receiving corps going forward. They just need to find a number one to set the rest off with the matchups they should be getting.

Kudos to GM Joe Schoen for scouring the NFL’s various scratch-n-dent bins and piecing this receiving corps together.

Second down: It’s all about the defense

The Giants were in position to win this game all afternoon long, right down to the very end. They were in position thanks to the play of the defense, who were disrupting and imposing their will all game long. The fact that they were doing so against one of the most potent offenses in the NFL makes the defense’s play all the more impressive.

The Giants sacked Kirk Cousins four times this game, with Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams, Landon Collins, and Azeez Ojulari all getting credit for sacks. And even when the Giants weren’t able to get the sack, Wink Martindale’s blitz schemes generated a ton of pressure on Cousins and they were beating him up all game long. That pressure likely covered a lot of warts on the back end of the defense, too.

Yes, the Giants were burned for big passing plays on blitzes late in the game. That’s the constant risk with this type of defense — that the other team will have the right call and buy just enough time to exploit weakened coverage.

But there were also plenty of other plays where Cousins had a receiver wide open down the field and was unable to find him because of the pressure brought by the Giants’ defense. Whether they were forcing Cousins off his spot, forcing the ball out early, preventing him from stepping into the throw, or forcing a check-down, this defense generated a lot of hidden yardage that played a massive role in the Giants having a chance to win.

Third down: Will the Giants ever be able to defend a tight end?

I just got done praising the Giants’ defense, but their inability to slow down tight ends remains a sore point.

Landon Collins had a good game and flashed in both run support and coverage in his first game back on the Giants’ active roster. He’s taken to his role as a “linebacker” in Wink Martindale’s defense, and I think we’ll see him continue to grow in this role over the last two games.

That said, the Giants desperately need an upgrade at the second level of their defense. They need to find a linebacker who processes quickly and has the athleticism to act on his reads. T.J. Hockenson is a talented, high-upside player, but he looked like Gronk (in his prime) or Jason Kelce against the Giants — and that’s a disturbingly consistent trend for them. Hockenson finished with 13 catches on 16 targets 109 yards and 2 touchdowns. It’s just downright tough to win when a tertiary option is able to gash a defense like that.

The Giants need to find an answer in the offseason.

Maybe that’s Darrian Beavers, or maybe the Giants will finally use a pick somewhere in the first three rounds on a linebacker. But having a true three-down MIKE who can play the pass, play the run, and blitz would be a tremendous upgrade for the Giants’ defense.

Fourth down: Of course the game ended like this

This was one of the most exciting games I can remember, and I was legitimately on an adrenaline high by the time Nick and I went live for our regular post-game stream. But I also can’t say I was surprised by the ending — well, other than that Joseph made that 61-yard kick.

These two teams came into the game with a combined 18 wins in one-score games. No two teams in the whole NFL are better at playing their opponents close than the Vikings and Giants. We all should have guessed that this game was going to come down to the wire.

Now, that’s not a good thing — putting yourself in situations where a single bounce or call can be game-changing isn’t a sustainable way to play. And this game really served to highlight just how narrow the Giants’ path to victory is. They can’t afford to be under water in penalties (they were, 7/63 to 2/14) and turnovers (2 to 0). The Giants just don’t have the roster to beat themselves and their opponents at the same time.

That said, it’s a credit to the coaching staff and players that they have the mental fortitude to be in these situations and keep giving themselves a chance to win.

Extra point - Happy Holidays everyone!

I thought about leading off with this, but it makes a better closer. I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for clicking and reading this year, and I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy Holidays in general!

Usual names on inactive list for New York

With no practice squad elevations for Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Giants have only five inactive players.

The list is a familiar one. Injured players Adoree’ Jackson and Shane Lemieux are on it. Wide receiver David Sills in inactive. Sills, who started five games early in the season, has been active just one time since Week 8. Cornerback Rodarius Williams is inactive for the fourth consecutive week. Offensive lineman Jack Anderson is inactive for the second straight game.

Jackson, who has not played since suffering a sprained MCL in Week 11, was seen by reporters doing conditioning work on the sideline at practice during the week, but has not officially practiced since suffering the injury.

Giants were staying in hotel near mall

Radio play-by-play man Bob Papa and apparently several New York Giants players were inside the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. during a Friday night shooting that left a 19-year-old dead.

The Giants, of course, are in Minnesota for Saturday’s 1 p.m. ET game against the Minnesota Vikings.

From the AP story:

The Giants were staying at a hotel adjacent to the mall. Pat Hanlon, the team’s executive vice president of communications, said he believes some players were in the mall at the time of the shooting.

“Everyone is back in the hotel and accounted for now,” Hanlon said Friday night.

The mall was reportedly on lockdown for approximately an hour. As of early Saturday morning, the shooter remained at large.

Papa tweeted that he also was in the mall when the incident occurred.
