Giants and Commanders play to a draw

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants and Washington Commanders played to a tie on Sunday in their fight to reach the NFC playoffs. The overtime game ended with a 20-20 score.

The Giants are 7-4-1. The Commanders are 7-5-1. The tie does keep the Giants in front of the Commanders in the NFC playoff standings. The Seattle Seahawks, seeded No. 8 in the NFC, entered Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams at 6-5.

Coach Brian Daboll wasn’t sure what the tie would do to the Giants’ playoff chances.

“We’ll figure it out,” he said. “There’s a long way to go. Better than if it was a loss, not as good as if it was a win.”

The Giants had a chance to win on the game’s final play, but a 58-yard Graham Gano field goal attempt fell well short. The tie was the first for the Giants since a 7-7 tie with Washington in 1997.

On their previous overtime possession, the Giants had reached the Washington 45-yard line, but punted after a botched third-and-3 play led to a run for no gain by Jones.

The Giants punted rather than going for the first down with 1:42 left in overtime. Daboll said he “potentially” might have gone for the first down on fourth-and-1, but punted on fourth-and-3, playing for another possession. The Giants got that possession at their 43-yard line with :28 to play, but only reached the Washington 40-yard line. That was not get close enough to give Gano a realistic chance to make a game-winning field goal.

“We were about five yards away from it,” Gano said. “We knew that going in but at the end of the game you got to take a shot at it.”

The teams play again in Landover, Md. in two weeks. Washington has a bye, while the Giants face the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles next week.

The Giants, leading 20-13 in the fourth quarter, were in position to clinch the game after a Daniel Jones to Darius Slayton completion gave them a first down at Washington’s 35-yard line with 5:57 to play, but a taunting penalty on center Jon Feliciano pushed them back and they punted to Washington with 3:43 to play.

“He [Feliciano] was flexing. He was going out to Slayton. I’m saying hey, good job, strong run. But it was close. It was in all those players,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “Again, how the guy looks at you know, interprets it. I don’t think he can hear what Jon’s saying to Slayton, so he ended up calling it. Absolutely, we shouldn’t even be in that situation. We get the ball there. It’s going to be a first right at the 35, probably made it a two-score game. Those are things we can’t even make it close.”

Feliciano insisted he was just flexing in Slayton’s direction.

“It sucks when you play two teams,” he said. “I’m probably gonna get fined for that,”

Following that sequence, Washington went 90 yards in eight plays for the tying score, a 28-yard Taylor Heinicke to Jahan Dotson pass with 1:45 to play. Heinicke kept the drive alive by completing a 20-yard pass to Curtis Samuel on fourth-and-4 from the Washington 27-yard line. The touchdown came three plays later. Joey Slye’s extra point tied the game.

First half

The teams went to the locker room tied, 13-13. The Giants trailed, 10-0, after the first quarter, but a 13-yard run by Saquon Barkley and a pair of Graham Gano field goals sandwiched around a 42-yard Joey Slye field goal for Washington knotted the score.

Chance to take big step toward a playoff berth slips away in tie with Washington

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants didn’t quite know how to react to Sunday’s 20-20 tie with the Washington Commanders.

Edge defender Oshane Ximines said he had never been involved in a tie.

“It’s my first time, so it’s a new experience for me,” Ximines said. “But it kind of feels like a loss. The goal is to win. Nobody’s happy for a tie.

“Inside personally, I just don’t feel like happy.”

Edge defender Kayvon Thibodeaux called it “unfamiliar.”

“When I walked off the crowd wasn’t booing, they weren’t cheering, there no noise. So that was that was different,” Thibodeaux said. “Within here, we know we just got to keep getting better, you know, we didn’t have the outcome that we wanted. So we just got to continue to get better and, you know, prepare for Philadelphia.”

Dexter Lawrence said the fact that it was an NFC East game made not winning tougher to take.

“You don’t want to tie a division game. That was a big game around this time too for us,” Lawrence said. “You know, we didn’t lose, that’s as positive, we get to see them again. You just don’t want to tie those games. You want to win those games.”

Quarterback Daniel Jones said the Giants were “disappointed” with the outcome.

“I think we’re all pretty disappointed with the result. Certainly not the one we were looking for,” Jones said. “We’ll go back to work and clean up a lot of things. I think it’s safe to say we’re disappointed but looking forward to getting back to work and working on things we got to improve on.”

There is no doubt this felt like a missed opportunity for the Giants. Because it was.

The Giants gifted Washington three points at the beginning of the game when Daniel Jones fumbled and Jamin Davis recovered at the Giants’ 47-yard line, leading to a Commanders field goal.

Leading 20-13 in the second half, the Giants’ offense faltered.

The Giants punted on four consecutive possessions in the second half after a Daniel Jones to Isaiah Hodgins gave them the lead on their opening possession of the third quarter.

The Giants squandered a late-game opportunity to take a two-score lead. After forcing a Commanders’ punt from their 6-yard line, the Giants had the ball at Washington’s 47-yard line with 6:22 to play. A 12-yard pass to Darius Slayton put the ball at the 35-yard line, seemingly in field goal range for Graham Gano. A taunting penalty on Jon Feliciano for flexing in a crowd of Washington players pushed the ball back to the 47.

The Giants punted. Washington drove for the game-tying score.

Feliciano was aggrieved, and he know his wallet will likely be lighter after this shot at the officials:

“It sucks, especially when you’re playing two teams.”

Still, Feliciano is in his eighth NFL season. You would think he would know better.

“We shouldn’t even be in that situation,” said head coach Brian Daboll. “We get the ball there; it’s going to be a first down. We’re at the 35 (yard line). Probably (would have) make it a two-score game. Those are things we can’t even make it close.”

The Giants had an opportunity to win the game in regulation even after squandering that opportunity. The Commanders had a fourth-and-four at their own 27-yard line with 2:47 to play. They let Heinicke escape the pocket, though, and he lobbed a desperation 20-yard throw to Curtis Samuel for the first down.

Two plays later, Jahan Dotson victimized undrafted rookie free agent slot cornerback Zyon Gilbert for a 28-yard score to tie the game.

Even then, the Giants could have won the game. On the first play of the ensuing possession, Daniel Jones fired a deep pass to a wide open Darius Slayton. Somehow, Slayton appeared to get turned around and couldn’t haul in a pass that would have put the Giants in Washington territory with roughly 90 seconds to play.

“It’s kind of a little bit of a different angle when you’re going up that seam, but like I said, I had it and I just have to find a way to bring it in on the way to the ground,” Slayton said. “Maybe [I could have kept running], but I chose to turn and jump. I have to live with what I chose.”

The Giants punted.

On their second possession of overtime, the Giants botched a third-and-3 play at the Commander’s 45-yard line when Saquon Barkley and Richie James appeared to run into each other, leaving Jones to run for no gain on the busted play.

Daboll chose to punt and play for another opportunity.

The Giants got the ball back, but a 58-yard Graham Gano field goal into the wind was hardly a realistic opportunity.

The Giants are left with an empty feeling. And the knowledge that not winning this game could prove costly as they try to reach the NFC playoffs.

“We knew we had chances to win the game and if we just executed, we probably had a really good chance to win the game,” Slayton said. “It’s just disappointing when you don’t do what you need to do to close out a game, even though it technically isn’t a loss, you want to win. You play to win. Nobody plays to tie.”

Well, that was frustrating

I’m not sure anybody saw the New York Giants and Washington Commanders finishing Week 13 in a 20-20 tie.

Sure, pretty much everyone saw it as a likely low-scoring, run heavy defensive slugfest. And it was probably always going to be a close game, considering both of these teams only ever play close games. But for both teams to trade double-digit leads as well as back-breaking mental mistakes to get the other team back in the game is simply amazing.

And not in a particularly good way, as this game just left an ugly taste in the mouth.

Fortunately — if there is an upside to this mess of a game — the Giants don’t have to wait long for a rematch against Washington.

But what can we take away from the immediate aftermath of the game before we start to turn the page to Week 14 and the Philadelphia Eagles?

First down: Of course the game ended like this...

I felt that this was a “mirror match” coming into this game. These are two very similar teams that feel like palate-swapped versions of the same team. The Ken and Ryu (Street Fighter) of the NFL. But even so, I felt that the Giants’ general discipline this year and Washington’s institutional tendency to fall apart would lead to a New York win.

Both the Giants and Commanders are flawed but scrappy teams who depend on running the ball, playing suffocating defense, and not beating themselves.

At times during the game it looked like opponents’ mistakes were going to lead to a blow-out, only for a lack of discipline to kill a teams’ momentum. First Washington jumped out to a 10-0 lead, then the Giants went on a 20-3 run, only for Washington to tie the game (again) with a pair of big plays down the field.

Both of these teams have been dealing with injuries at key positions and neither one is really built for convincing multi-score wins.

In the end, it’s good that the Giants’ didn’t lose the game, but by the end I’m not sure either team really deserved the win. They’re very evenly matched, both in strengths and weaknesses. But when I picked the Giants to win, both before and during the game, it was because of the discipline with which the Giants played earlier in the year. This game, the two teams seemingly traded game-killing mistakes.

So maybe it’s fitting the game ended as it did. Not good, but fitting. The Giants just can’t ever do anything the easy way, can they?

Second down: The game’s slowing down for Kayvon Thibodeaux

For the second week in a row, rookie edge defender Kayvon Thibodeaux was an absolute menace.

I’m not even talking about Thibodeaux’s sack, which very nearly ended the game with a safety. That was clearly a miscommunication on the Washington offensive line, because I can’t see them just not blocking a player who had been a consistent presence in the backfield even when blocked throughout the game.

Not only does Thibodeaux look fully healthy, with all the explosion, quickness, agility, and speed he showed at Oregon, but he also looks increasingly comfortable at the NFL level. The game looks as though it’s truly slowing down for Thibodeaux and he’s able to play fast as a result. The production might not be there (yet), but he is a complete edge defender who is not only disrupting with his pass rushes, but he’s also becoming a reliable run defender. Given the state of rushing attacks in the NFC East, that’s a great development for the Giants’ defense.

Thibodeaux absolutely looks as though he belongs next Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams. It’s possible that in Thibodeaux and Ojulari the Giants might have a bookend similar to Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora back in the day.

Wink Martindale wants to call the defense from the back forward, but he has a very good foundation along the defensive front.

Third down: The Giants need to figure out their interior offensive line

I have to admit, I searched for a while to figure out what I wanted to write in this section. At first I wanted to steal a bit of Ed’s thunder and give the Giants’ coaching staff a “Kudos”. At least I was going to while the Giants were dominating the game and looked as though they were going to run away with the game.

But considering the mental mistakes that cost the Giants opportunities to win — like Feliciano’s taunting penalty or Richie James running into Saquon Barkley on that zone-read play — I can’t give props to the staff that had 10 days to get the team ready.

Then I thought I might address the Giants’ offense in this game and why it was so frustrating. I’ve already seen plenty of frustration bubbling up among fans, but I realized I’d need (much) more than a single subsection to sort through why the Giants’ offense looked like it did.

But during the post-game livestream with Nick, I decided that I do need to address one aspect of it: The Giants’ interior offensive line.

The Giants’ defensive front played well, but so did Washington’s. A big part of the Giants’ struggles this game, and their offensive struggles this year, comes down to their interior offensive line. I’m not going to say that the iOL is an anchor or blame them for everything wrong with the offense. Football is just way too complicated for that, and they’ve had good play as well as poor.

That said, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Giants need to continue to build their interior offensive line. Jon Feliciano will probably lose his starting job at center to Nick Gates at some point, and Mark Glowinski has become a disappointment as the “steady vet” acquisition.

Da’Ron Payne is having every bit as good a break-out season as Dexter Lawrence and he’s been wrecking games all year long. That’s a tough ask for Feliciano and Glowinski, but pressure up the middle has been a consistent problem all season.

Considering the Giants have the Eagles next week and a rematch with Washington the week after, they don’t have much time to figure something out. Hopefully they’ll get Ben Bredeson and Joshua Ezeudu back healthy sooner rather than later.

Fourth down: See ya again in two weeks

It’s a massive quirk of the schedule this year that the Giants will play both of their games against the Commanders twice in three weeks — and Washington will see the Giants on either side around their (very late) bye.

The Giants are looking forward to a game against the Philadelphia Eagles, while the Commanders’ players are looking forward to rest and the coaching staff looking back on this game.

I can’t speak to how often divisional games happen this close together, but it can’t be very often. Normally the NFL likes to space these games out with half in the first part of the season and half in the home-stretch.

It will be absolutely fascinating to see how these two teams adapt to this game and add wrinkles based on the game-tape. It will also be interesting to see how changes in the injury report (most notably the expected return of Chase Young) impacts the game plans.

Chase Young not playing for Commanders

With 11 players questionable heading into Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders, the New York Giants’ inactive list wasn’t easy to figure out in advance.

Shane Lemieux (toe), Joshua Ezeudu (neck) and Adoree’ Jackson (knee) were ruled out on Friday.

Joining them as inactive will be wide receiver Kenny Golladay, who was added to the injury report on Saturday as the latest Giant to be struck by illness, cornerback Darnay Holmes, who had been questionable with a shoulder injury, tight end Lawrence Cager and edge defender Elerson Smith.

Returning to action will be right tackle Evan Neal, tight end Daniel Bellinger, edge defender Azeez Ojulari and safety Tony Jefferson.

Holmes being inactive explains why the Giants elevated rookie cornerback Zyon Gilbert from the practice squad.

For Washington, edge defender Chase Young will not make his season debut on Sunday. He is inactive.

Lineup changes

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reported Sunday morning that wide receiver Marcus Johnson would replace Gary Brightwell as the Giants’ kickoff returner. Brightwell has averaged 20.1 yards on 15 returns this season, 26th of 30 returners with at least 15 chances. Johnson returned nine kickoffs for the Tennessee Titans last season for an average of 19.9 yards, and has an average of 19.6 yards on 11 career returns.

It’s really about the basic things football is usually about

In thinking about the three keys to victory in Sunday’s critical New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders game, the answers seem both straightforward and obvious. Run the football, stop the run, make the most explosive or game-changing plays.

When you think about the reality that the Giants’ formula for success all season has been a straightforward one, that makes sense.

Let’s look at the three keys.

Run the football

We have talked about this throughout the week — the Giants ran the ball exceptionally well while racing out to a 6-1 star, but have struggled to run it while going 1-3 the past four games.

See these two posts:

Run, Daniel, run! Giants hope to get more from QB Daniel Jones as a runner

To make a playoff run, Giants need to get Saquon Barkley going again

The Giants are built offensively to run the ball, control the clock and the pace of play, pass the ball on their terms and win games late. In the first seven games, the Giants ran for less than 100 yards just one time. In the last four games, they have been below 100 rushing yards in three of the four. The only time they passes that 100-yard mark win in their victory over the Houston Texans.

The Commanders have a talented front and a top 10 run defense in yards allowed, though they are 15th in yards allowed per running play (4.4).

The Giants should have right tackle Evan Neal and versatile tight end Daniel Bellinger back in the lineup Sunday, which should help. Unfortunately, the middle of the offensive line is in flux. With Josh Ezeudu and Shane Lemieux out, and Ben Bredeson not ready to return from IR, Nick Gates will likely start at left guard. Right guard Mark Glowinski showed up on the injury report Saturday with a back injury. If he can’t go, the guards could be Gates and Nick Anderson with Jon Feliciano at center.

“It starts with me, said running back Saquon Barkley. “Continue to trust the system, make sure I’m in good relationships with the linemen and sticking with the run. That’s the way we won games this year, so a lot of teams are going to come in and try to stop that, that’s going to be their focal point. There have been teams prior to the last two weeks that came in and that was their focal point, and we were able to still get the run game going, and lean on it. We’ve just got to get back to that and everyone needs to make plays when the plays need to be made and it starts with me.”

Stop the run

The Giants have not done that well at all this season. They give up 5.2 yards per rushing attempt, 30th in the league, and 138.9 yards rushing per game, 26th overall.

After a 1-4 start, the Commanders have increasingly become a run-oriented team. They have compiled more than 100 yards rushing in six of their last seven games, and had a season-high 176 rushing yards last Sunday in a victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. had his first 100-yard game (18 carries, 105 yards) against Atlanta.

The Giants don’t have a ton of depth behind Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence on the defensive line, and have struggled to get consistent play from the off-ball linebacker spot.

“We’re just going to have to get 11 hats to the football, and right now statistically, our run defense isn’t very good,” said defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. “We need to continue to work on fundamentals and technique and getting everybody to the football. When you start putting in all the other runs, the wide receiver sweeps and all the other plays off of it, I think run averages are up across the league, but I think we need to get better at it.”

Game-changing plays

Turnovers, explosive offensive plays, red zone and third- or fourth-down conversions, special teams plays. They all count in this category, and they could all make a difference.

The Giants are +3 in takeaway/giveaway ratio while the Commanders are neutral at 0.

In the return game, the Giants are 26th in kickoff return average (20.1 yards) and 21st in punt return average (5.5 yards).

The Giants have only 28 offensive plays of 20 or more yards. The Commanders, also not an offensive juggernaut, have 36.

Coach Brian Daboll knows the Giants need some explosive plays.

“The less explosive plays, the higher level of execution on a consistent basis you need to have,” he said. “But we’ve had quite a few long drives, and you have to have usually 11 guys doing the right thing to operate an efficient offense 14, 15 plays in a row. So, anytime you can get an explosive (play), whether that’s a run or a pass, that certainly helps because it just eliminates some of the situations that you’ll be in throughout the drive. Third downs where it’s usually advantage defense, and on the road in a tough environment against a defensive line like that that can get after the passer. You take away those, that helps you. No doubt about it.”

Mark Glowinski, Kenny Golladay added to injury report

The New York Giants are activating edge defender Azeez Ojulari and safety Tony Jefferson from injured reserve in time for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.

Ojulari, who has battled injuries to both calf muscles this season, has played in only two games with one sack and a pair of solo tackles. He had 8.0 sacks as a rookie in 2021.

Jefferson, in his ninth NFL season, played in three games before going on IR with a foot injury. He had five tackles, four of them solo.

The Giants also signed tight end Nick Vannett to the active roster and waived tight end Tanner Hudson. Vannett, a seven-year veteran, was added to the practice squad Nov. 22. Hudson played in 11 games this season with 10 receptions.

The Giants, perhaps looking to bolster their leaky run defense, are also elevating defensive tackle Vernon Butler from the practice squad. A 2016 first-round pick of the Carolina Panthers, Butler was signed to the practice squad on Nov. 15.

The Giants also elevated rookie defensive back Zyon Gilbert, who has spent the entire season on the practice squad.

Injury updates

The Giants added starting right guard Mark Glowinski (back) and wide receiver Kenny Golladay (illness) to the injury report. Golladay lockers near Gary Brightwell and Darius Slayton, both of whom have been sick this week. Glowinski and Golladay are both listed as questionable.

With Shane Lemieux (toe) and Josh Ezeudu (neck) out, the Giants could already be starting Nick Gates at left guard for the first time this season. If Glowinski can’t go, the Giants would likely have a Gates-Jack Anderson combination at guard.

The Commanders are apparently going to be without edge defender Chase Young. He reportedly is unlikely to make his season debut Sunday after a 2021 torn ACL.
