What did the tape show about the Giants’ home-opener win?

The New York Giants came out on top in their home opener, beating the Carolina Panthers 19-16. This marks the first time since 2016 that the Giants have gone to a 2-0 start.

The Giants’ win over Carolina told us quite a bit about this team — both about their fortitude to fight for a full 60 minutes as well as some of the issues they still need to address. Nick Falato and Chris Pflum dove into the tape to see what it could reveal about the Giants on the field and their new coaching staff.

The Giants are 2-0, and the fans are feelin’ fine

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Leading up to Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, the New York Giants — most notably defensive coordinator Wink Martindale — implored Giants fans to bring the energy to MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Towel-waving Giants fans did not disappoint as the Giants opened a rare three-game home stand by defeating the Panthers, 19-16, to reach 2-0 for the first time in six years.

The stadium wasn’t full and there was an undercurrent of unhappiness in the third quarter with the offense struggling and the Giants trailing, but for the most part this was an energetic, fired up crowd exhorting the Giants to give them something to believe in after five consecutive double-digit loss seasons and one playoff berth since 2011. There was a palpable energy all day.

When Julian Love sacked Baker Mayfield to force a Carolina punt with 2:06 to play and the Giants clinging to the lead, the stadium rocked like it hasn’t for a long while.

“When that third-down sack happened, it was crazy. The crowd were crazy,” said veteran defensive tackle Justin Ellis, a first-year Giant. “And I was just like, this is New York, you know? So at the end of the game, when we knew it was over, I hugged Coach Wink and said, man, did you see that? And we talked about it. It was so amazing.”

Head coach Brian Daboll could feel the energy when he pulled into the parking lot.

“Fans were great. Just driving over here from the facility looking at all the tailgates and all the beverages and all the games they were playing, they were pretty rocked up,” Daboll said. “They had their jerseys on, some old school ones, new school ones. They were great on third down. They know when to cheer. And that was certainly helpful to have have them out there.”

Placekicker Graham Gano said the crowd was “awesome,” and that it was a topic of conversation on the sideline.

“From the first quarter on, we looked around the sidelines and I said to the other guys ‘This is awesome seeing this’. The fans were waiving the towels, bringing the juice and that’s special,” Gano said. “Hopefully, fans will keep coming and doing that and I don’t think they realize how much it really means to us as players having them there and having their support. We couldn’t play this game without them.”

The Giants are 2-0. They have a wounded Dallas Cowboys team coming to MetLife Stadium a week from Monday, then a rebuilding Chicago Bears team that won just six games a year ago.

Do Giants fans starving for good football dare to dream about their team being 4-0? I think that’s getting greedy, but, hey, dream if you want to dream.

Finding ways to win

Bad teams find ways to lose. The Giants have certainly found a number of creative, and ugly, ways to lose games over the past few years. These first two weeks, they have found ways to win 50-50 games that could have gone either way. Their two victories have come by a combined total of four points.

“I’d say whether you score a lot or not, it’s important to figure out a way to win the games. You can win a game a variety of ways. You can also lose it. Again, the object of the game is to have one more point at the end and to give yourself a chance in the fourth quarter,” Daboll said. “Right now, where we’re at, we’re a young team that’s still developing. We’ve got a long way to go. But I’d say that again, we’re shuffling guys in and out. We’re trying to find the best combinations, but taking care of the ball and getting it goes a long way – tackling well and being able to figure out a way in the fourth quarter when it’s close to grind out those yards you need to put yourself in a chance to win.”

There were a lot of things that happened Sunday for the Giants that weren’t good.

They got turnovers in Carolina territory the first two times the Panthers touched the ball, but could only convert them into six points.

They averaged only 5.2 yards per passing play and hit just one play of longer than 20 yards. Overall, they averaged a miniscule 3.8 yards per play.

They struggled to run the ball, averaging just 3.1 yards per attempt (33 carries, 103 yards). Saquon Barkley had 72 yards on 21 carries, just 3.4 yards per carry.

The offensive line had a difficult day, in both run and pass blocking, against a good Carolina front seven.

The defense gave up a three-play, 67-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter, but otherwise played exceptionally.

The Giants lost another key player — defensive lineman Leonard Williams — to injury, but Wink Martindale kept attacking and the defense kept getting stops when it needed to.

“I feel like right now we’re not wavering. We’re scrappy as a group. We get closer when the times get tougher. So that’s what you want at this time of the season, said Ellis. “Everybody’s still trying to figure it out early on. And so I think that’s, that’s what’s good for us right now.”

Wide receiver rotation

When Kadarius Toney played just seven snaps last week, Daboll was adamant that the receivers would compete on a weekly basis for snaps. This week, Kenny Golladay was the odd man out. He got only a couple of snaps when the Giants were in the red zone. Toney, Sterling Shepard (six catches, 34 yards), Richie James (five catches, 51 yards) and David Sills got the bulk of the playing time.

“It’s a continual competition at receiver. I’ve said it since when? I’m not being a jerk. I’ve said it since the middle of camp, right? It hasn’t changed. It’s going to be a continual competition,” Daboll said. “Kadarius had opportunities today, and we’ll see what it is next week: maybe it’s (wide receiver Darius) Slayton, maybe it’s more KG. We’ll see where we go with that. But I think that position, we’re just going to keep on rolling guys and play the guys that week that we think would give us the best chance.”

Daboll said he told Golladay during the week that Sills would start in his spot, and that the veteran handled that news “like a pro.”

I think it’s outstanding that Daboll and the Giants aren’t simply looking at Golladay’s paycheck or his resume and thinking ‘he has to play.’ That is, admittedly, easier when the current GM isn’t the one who signed him to that four-year, $72 million deal.

This, though, is going to be an interesting situation to watch.

Good Graham

I think the Giants are really lucky to have Gano.

Gano went 4 of 4 on field goals Sunday, with a game-winner from 56 yards, a 51-yarder and pedestrian kicks of 33 and 36 yards.

The 56-yarder was longer than the Giants had planned to let Gano kick from, but Daboll trusted his eyes and his 13-year veteran kicker.

“It was probably a little bit a little bit past the line that we set going into the game, by about a yard and a half. I just told T-Mac that he was kicking it well, he kicked the other one [51 yards] well,” Daboll said. “I looked at Graham, he’s done a lot in practice. I know he’s played a lot in this league. And again, we’d like to be closer for him. But that’s his job as a kicker, and as a snapper and as a holder to execute those plays when they’re needed the most. A lot of times it’s under pressure. And the three of those guys along with the field goal protection unit did a good job.”

Gano has now made 64 of 69 field goals (92.7 percent) as a Giant, including 14 of 18 from beyond 50 yards.

Holder Jamie Gillan had no doubt about the 56-yard attempt.

“Graham’s what, year 13 now. He’s got a big leg, he does it all in practice. I love Graham. He is such a pro as far as kicking,” Gillan said. “Kicking is an art and he day in day out it’s same ball strike every day. It’s amazing to watch. I have everybody has full confidence in him.”

Now the Giants will hold their breath

Leonard Williams is one of their best, and most important, players. In the category of ‘players the Giants simply cannot lose,’ Williams is right at the top. He plays more snaps than any Giants defensive linemen, and is always among defensive line league leaders in snaps played, and impacts both the run and the pass from a variety of alignments.

The Giants have no one else who can do what he does.

Williams’ teammates were sounding optimistic about the extent of his injury after the game, but that doesn’t mean Williams won’t miss time.

The Giants will anxiously await the test results on Williams’ knee.

Giants are 2-0 for first time since 2016

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants won a back-and-forth game with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, 19-16. The Giants are now 2-0 for the first time since 2016.

Graham Gano provided the winning points with a 56-yard field goal to snap a 16-16 tie with 3:34 to play. The kick ended an 11-play, 37-yard, 7:12 drive.

Gano felt confident before the kick.

“I knew it going out there. Dabes [Giants HC Brian Daboll] looked at me and kind of just pointed and said ‘Go out’ and said ‘Hey, can you make this’? and I looked over and said ‘Yeah’ and laughed and then I got out there and I was like ‘Man, this is a long one. The wind is blowing our way,’” Gano said. “But yeah, you just try to hit it the same and make sure you hit it pure. Those guys did a great job [the Giants special teams]. It’s like I was saying earlier, it takes a lot more; it takes good blocking, a good snap and a good hold.”

Gano went 4 of 4 on field goals Sunday, including 56 and 51-yard kicks.

“I’m happy for the guys,” said head coach Brian Daboll. “Graham made all his kicks, some big kicks there at the end for us. DJ led the team down to get some extra points there, is a huge difference. Our defense played well, started out fast. Wish we could have gotten more points on the board early on after those two turnovers. But all in all, good team win.”

Carolina (0-2) had a chance to tie or go ahead, but a blitzing Julian Love sacked Carolina quarterback Baker Mayfield on third-and-5 to force a punt with 2:06 to play. The Giants were able to run out the clock, keyed by an 11-yard run by quarterback Daniel Jones on a third-and-2 that sealed the victory.

“A situation like that, we get outside the pocket and obviously you want to throw a completion, stay in bounds or run the ball to keep the clock moving,” Jones said of the game-clinching third-down conversion. “I thought they matched Saquon [Barkley] in the flat, saw a lane to run so I stepped up and run. Obviously, I wanted to protect the ball but I think it was a great call in a situation like that – you want to give yourself options to do both things and I think that was the idea there. I thought it was a good call and I thought the guys executed well.”

Stats

Daniel Jones completed 22 of 34 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown.

Saquon Barkley ran 20 times for 68 yards.

Richie James caught five passes for 51 yards.

Julian Love led the Giants with seven tackles, one for loss, and a sack.

Injury news

Defensive lineman Leonard Williams left the game in the third quarter. He went to the locker room and was quickly ruled out with a knee injury.

Rookie firsts

Daniel Bellinger’s 16-yard touchdown catch-and-run in the third quarter was both the first reception and first touchdown of the fourth-round pick’s NFL career.

What is Bellinger’s plan for the ball?

“I’m not sure yet, but I’ll tell you what, I’m keeping it close to me tonight,” he said. “I’m holding onto it tonight.”

Dane Belton’s first NFL play was a big one, as he recovered a Chuba Hubbard fumble on the opening kickoff to set up the Giants’ first points of the game.

First half

The Giants had two early opportunities. Carolina fumbled on both the opening kickoff and their first possession, giving the Giants the ball at the Carolina 22 and 40-yard lines. The Giants could only convert those into 36- and 33-yard Graham Gano field goals.

A pair of second quarter Eddy Piniero field goals knotted the score 6-6 at halftime.

Pre-game intros

The Giants introduced the offensive starters individually on Sunday. Not surprisingly, Saquon Barkley was introduced last and got the biggest ovation.

Giants inactives

The Giants will host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football in Week 3.
What can we take away from the Giants’ second win?

The New York Giants ground out a tough 19-16 victory on Sunday over their doppelgängers, the Carolina Panthers.

This game really could have gone either way, and a different bounce here or a stray breeze there might have flipped this outcome. But the Giants were able to hang on, make a couple more plays than the Panthers, and outlast them for the win.

This game wasn’t pretty. It was a tough, messy slog through four quarters as the two teams traded defensive body blows and offensive mistakes. And yet the Giants did enough to earn another close win over a tough opponent.

What can we take away from the Giants’ first 2-0 start since 2016?

First down: Slow start and a plodding offense

For the second time in two weeks, the Giants started the game at a snails’ pace on offense. The Giants had two golden opportunities to start the game, getting the ball on the Panthers’ 22- and 40-yard line off of a pair of fumbles. However, they couldn’t cash in on those opportunities and settled for field goals both times.

The Giants netted 60 total offensive yards on 26 offensive plays with zero net rushing yards in the first half. They went 1-for-7 on third down and averaged just 3.9 yards per pass attempt. The offense found a spark on their second drive of the third quarter, sprinting down the field a touchdown. However, the game returned to being a defensive showdown after through the remainder of the third quarter and into the fourth.

So far Daniel Jones has 364 yards passing on the season, is averaging 6.6 yards per attempt, 5.17 air yards per attempt. The offense was hard to watch with Saquon Barkley being held in check most of the game. The Giants are going to need to emphasize getting off to a faster start on offense, and figure out some way to get their passing game going.

At some point they’ll meet an offense that has its act together, and this team might not be able to keep up.

Second down: Oshane’s big day

If there was one real winner for the Giants today, it has to be fourth-year edge defender Oshane Ximines. The Giants needed somebody to step up and slow down the Panthers offense, and Ximines was the unlikely hero. He seemed to be everywhere on the Giants’ defense today and was a key cog in in just about every defensive play the Giants made.

Ximines is one of several Giants in the final year of his rookie deal, and he has gone from being expected to be a “former Giant” to the Giants’ third edge defender. He has earned a spot in this defensive rotation and is well on his way toward earning a contract extension after the season.

What happens with Ximines’ play time once Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari return from injury will be one of the under-the-radar stories to keep an eye on.

Third down: Injuries continue to pile up

Another game, another injury.

Starting defensive lineman Leonard Williams went down mid-way through the third quarter. It was an ugly play that saw Williams lose his feet and get his legs tangled with Panthers’ right tackle Taylor Moton. His knee was torqued as he was rolled up and had to be helped off the field, where he was immediately ruled out of the game.

The extend of the injury isn’t known, and Williams was wearing a knee brace after the game. We won’t have an update on the injury or a potential timetable for his recovery until after he undergoes tests on Monday. However, the potential loss of Williams would be a blow to a defense that has been navigating the injury bug for weeks now.

Fourth down: Wink Martindale stays aggressive

But while the Giants’ defense has taken body blows from non-stop injuries and were down four starters by the end of the game — Williams, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Azeez Ojulari, Aaron Robinson — defensive coordinator Wink Martindale didn’t tone things down any. The Giants might have been scraping the bottom of their depth chart, but he kept dialing up blitzes through the very end of the game.

Martindale told us in no uncertain terms from the very first preseason that blitzing and aggression would be the foundation of his defense, and he’s stayed true to that philosophy. While we don’t have the final numbers for just how often he sent pressure, I feel confident in saying it was a lot. The Giants continued to play a lot of aggressive coverages and scheme pressure from unexpected sources and angles.

It didn’t always work out — D.J. Moore’s touchdown came when he was matched up in man coverage on Cor’Dale Flott and discovered he could just run through the 175-pound rookie — but the Giants’ aggression has been a part of their winning formula. It’s allowed them to compensate, at least in part, for all of their injuries. Likewise, the Giants’ defensive aggression has allowed them to be in position to capitalize when the opposing offense makes a mistake.

It remains to be seen how that’ll hold up when the Giants play a good offense, but for now that aggressive defense is dragging a listless offense to wins.

Giants’ defense suffers another big loss

The New York Giants lost defensive lineman Leonard Williams in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers with a knee injury.

Williams went down midway through the period. He was down on the field long enough that head coach Brian Daboll came out to check on him. He eventually limped off the field, appearing to favor his right leg. Williams went directly to the locker room and was quickly ruled out.

The Giants were already playing without edge defenders Kayvon Thibodeaux (MCL) and Azeez Ojulari (calf), along with cornerback Aaron Robinson (appendicitis).

Williams plays more snaps that any Giants defensive lineman.

Defensive line coach Andre Patterson recently explained why Williams is on the field so much.

“When you’re good and you’re one of the best players that’s where you’re going to end up. He’s getting paid a lot of money for a reason. When the game’s on the line you want your best guys out there,” Patterson said.

“He’s an elite football player. You want to keep the guys on the field that have a chance to change the game around.”

Head coach Brian Daboll had no post-game update on Williams. The defensive lineman, though, offered an update of his own:

Your second-half open thread

The New York Giants are tied with the Carolina Panthers 6-6 as they go into half-time.

The Giants got off to a great start to the game, taking advantage of some ugly mistakes by the Panthers. The game opened with Carter Coughlin forcing a fumble on the opening kick-off, and Darnay Holmes forced a fumble on third-and-22 on the Panthers’ first offensive series.

Unfortunately, the Giants couldn’t take advantage on offense and came away with just two field goals despite getting the ball on Carolina’s 22 and 40-yard lines (respectively).

The game quickly turned into a defensive slug-fest and neither team was able to generate much traction on offense. Both offenses made key mistakes that cost them yards and opportunities, and both teams played some inspired defense in the respective red zones.

Use this as your open thread as the Giants get the ball to start the second half.
