Jones earns some respect, but also his first defeat

Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones summed up the New York Giants performance against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in three words:

“Not good enough.”

In the past two weeks, Jones provided a jolt to the Giants offense that helped lead them to two straight wins. But the streak ended at two today as the rookie posted his worst numbers to date in the Giants 28-10 loss Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

Jones was 21 of 38 for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was ineffective in the red zone and overthrew two balls to wide receiver Sterling Shepard that could have changed the momentum of the game – one in the first quarter and the second when the Giants were trailing 18-10 and Jones threw the ball too high, forcing Shepard out-of-bounds.

“Two big missed opportunities,” Jones said. “I think when you play a good defense like Minnesota you need to convert those. I will certainly look at those, but I have to be better in those situations and we have to take advantage of those.”

For Jones, the game was a collection of missed opportunities, with the pass to Shepard being one of the most difficult to swallow. The pressure the Minnesota defense created meant that Jones was hit more and he had less room to run.

But Jones is not making excuses.

“Maybe there wasn’t as much space at times, but I think that’s going to happen any game, and as long as you are creating opportunities, you need to be able to convert those,” Jones said. “We didn’t do that. I didn’t do that. That’s why we lost.”

Moving forward, Jones said that he does not think the team needs to rethink its strategy or game plan, but instead must focus on execution.

“We’re aware enough,” Jones said. “We know what we need to do. It’s just about doing it and making sure we are doing it every single play we are out there.”

Jones is the first person to take blame for the team’s mistakes, but head coach Pat Shurmur once again highlighted the rookie’s toughness and poise.

“He made some good throws under duress at times,” Shurmur said. Then there were a couple he was just off on. The one that comes to mind is the Shep (Sterling Shepard) throw in the end zone. There are situations where I wish I could’ve given him better plays. But I thought he battled, and that’s why he’s going to be a good player for us for a long time.”

Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen started his media scrum after the game by echoing Shurmur’s sentiments on Jones.

“I want to give a shout out to the rook,” Griffen said. “He’s doing really good. He’s shown courage. He’s a good player, so I see good things happening for him in the future.”

Though Jones said that it is never a good feeling to lose, he demonstrated that poise that Shurmur and Griffen mentioned throughout the course of the game. He remained calm in the pocket and he was able to hold onto the football after being hit. Jones takes full responsibility for the loss though, as the Giants now drop to 2-3 on the season.

“I have to be better,” Jones said. “I thought we created a lot of opportunities for ourselves to make plays and we didn’t make them. You’re not going to win if you can’t convert those opportunities.”

Jones will have to have a short memory though as the Giants play the undefeated New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium on Thursday Night Football.

“We are looking forward to the quick turn around and the fact that we get to play four days from now,” Jones said. “It gives us a chance to get back out there and correct some of the things we need to correct.”

Pat Shurmur, players react to loss

What were the New York Giants saying after Sunday’s 28-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings? Let’s go inside the locker room and find out.

Pat Shurmur on whether he was encouraged by the Giants at least getting scoring opportunities against a good defense ...

“No, I’m not encouraged or discouraged by that. When you get down there, you have to score. If we play these guys again, there’s a handful of things I might do differently. It’s not going to change my sleep pattern knowing that we played against a good defense. That’s a b—-shit mentality. We’re out there to win games, regardless of how good the team is.

Nate Solder on his struggles ...

The left tackle had a rough outing two weeks ago against Shaq Barrett of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and again Sunday as Everson Griffen had a sack and a quarterback hit and constantly harassed Daniel Jones.

“You know what? I haven’t been playing this whole season very well. I felt like myself today at times, which I was happy about. So, I think that we have to build off of that and continue to improve.

“ ... none of it has been good enough. It all falls on each individual’s shoulders, and I’m the first on that list. I have to run block better. I have to pass block better. I have to communicate better. I have to do all of the things that I need to do to be the best player that I can be.”

Evan Engram on remaining positive ...

‘We just have to stay the course. Like I said, there’s nothing to be discouraged about. There were plays that could have been made. There were a lot of 50-50 balls that we have to make. We make those plays, then it’s a different ballgame. So there’s nothing to really get discouraged about. We’re fine.

“ ... There’s no worry. There’s no doubt. We put the work in. We believe in each other. There’s no doubt in our minds that we can go up there (New England) and compete with this team and go get a win.”

Daniel Jones on the Minnesota defense ...

“They are a good defense and they deserve credit. Like I said, I think we created enough opportunities for ourselves to win. Maybe there wasn’t as much space at times, but I think that’s going to happen any game, and as long as you are creating opportunities, you need to be able to convert those. We didn’t do that, I didn’t do that, that’s why we lost.”

Sterling Shepard on the fourth-down play he couldn’t make in the end zone ...

“For me, I feel like I should come up with that. It’s a tough catch, but I feel like I can make tough catches. Myself personally, I feel like I need to come up with those.”

Jabrill Peppers on the performance of the defense ...

“They have a lot of guys out there who can be impact players. It just took them a while to get going, but we gave those guys every inch of respect that you can. [Adam] Thielen and [Stefon] Diggs, you would be a fool not to acknowledge those guys. Dalvin [Cook] is one of the best running backs in the league, but those guys can still play a little bit, but we can’t make it easy on them. We have to challenge at the point of attack, challenge every catch and make open-field tackles. That’s really what it all comes down to; those guys are great players, they can play, too, but we need to catch tackles and eliminate he Y.A.C. [Yards-After-Catch] and I think we definitely would’ve come out with a different outcome.

“We were just missing tackles and had bad eyes, man. I feel as though we didn’t play as clean of a game as we should have.”

There is reason for hope, but Sunday’s game is a reminder of how far the Giants still have to go

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants got a reality check on Sunday afternoon.

After two victories, one fortunate and one overwhelming, that left the Giants giddy about the future of rookie quarterback Daniel Jones and thinking that maybe, just maybe they had a chance to do something this season the Minnesota Vikings brought the Giants crashing back to reality with a 28-10 victory.

It was a game that could have been closer had the Giants taken advantage of a couple of opportunities, but at the same time felt far more lopsided than even the 18-point margin of defeat indicated.

“We faced a good football team. There were times in the game we presented ourselves with opportunities. We didn’t take advantage of them,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “When that happens against a good team they take advantage of them.

“They (the Vikings) played well. We didn’t take advantage of our opportunities to give ourselves a chance to win the football game.”

The Giants’ victories the past two weeks came against a mediocre Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that gifted them a win by blowing an 18-point and missing what would have been a game-winning 34-yard field goal on the final play and a winless Washington Redskins team that is at least as dysfunctional as the city it represents.

The Vikings were a different story.

A talented, but struggling offense in the first quarter of the season the Vikings exposed the Giants’ defense on a number of levels on Sunday. Using play action effectively, often getting Kirk Cousins out of the pocket and abusing the Giants with everything from screen passes to deep balls the Vikings did everything with their passing attack they had been unable to do for the first four weeks of the season.

“Credit to them. They had a good day offensively,” said Giants linebacker David Mayo. “We understood that their offense is based on run and boot and play action off of it. That’s what they want to do. We just didn’t have our best day.”

Minnesota exposed the Giants’ weakness at linebacker, where Mayo, Nate Stupar and Josiah Tauaefa were playing because Ryan Connelly, Alec Ogletree and Tae Davis were not. EDGE Lorenzo Carter was also out of Sunday’s lineup, replaced by Oshane Ximines.

Slot receiver Adam Thielen had a field day with 7 catches in 8 targets for 130 yards and 2 scores. It was brutally apparent that Grant Haley couldn’t cover him. Unfortunately for the Giants, neither could anyone else they tried.

The Vikings ran the ball pretty much at will, attacking the edges of the Giants’ defense effectively. Cook carried 21 times for 132 yards, 6.3 per carry. In all, Minnesota ran 34 times for 211 yards, 6.2 per rushing attempt.

Minnesota, basically, made the Giants defense look like the overmatched, ineffective group it had been when it gave up 94 points (31.3 per game) the first three weeks. The Giants gave up only 3 points in beating Washington and, when you look at what happened vs. Minnesota, that really tells you a lot about the sorry state of the Redskins.

“Kudos to them for executing their game plan. We have to execute ours better. We have to tackle better. Get off the field on third down,” said defensive back Michael Thomas.

The Giants are well aware that the league’s best team, the New England Patriots, is next up on Thursday night. They understand what they will face, and that the Patriots will go to school on the play action, the crossing routes, the runs to the edges that the Giants couldn’t handle on Sunday.

“It’s a season. You’re going to have some great games. Can’t get too high. Gonna have some games like today where you’re frustrated, you’re pissed. Can’t get too low. Watch the film. Make the corrections. Don’t make excuses. Have thick skin. Don’t get sensitive when we start making corrections. Go to work.”

The Giants’ defense looked on Sunday like the work in progress that it is. Dexter Lawrence had a nice day with a sack, five tackles, a forced and a quarterback hit. DeAndre Baker made some good plays, but had a foolish taunting penalty that sustained a drive and led to a Minnesota touchdown Haley had a rough day. The linebackers got exposed.

The offense, which looked so promising with Jones showing poise and using his legs to make some plays the last two weeks, also got brought back to reality just a bit.

Without Saquon Barkley, the Giants weren’t going to have things go as smoothly every week as they did a week ago against Washington. When Wayne Gallman left with a concussion on the Giants’ first offensive series, he pretty much took any hope the Giants had of a running game with him.

The Giants ran 20 times for 64 yards, with Gallman’s 11-yard run on which he was concussed being their best run of the day.

Jones impressed the Vikings.

“I want to give a shout out to the rook (Daniel Jones). He’s doing really good,” said Minnesota defensive end Everson Griffen. “He’s shown courage. He’s a good player, so I see good things happening for him in the future.”

He couldn’t, however, beat them.

Unfortunately, for the first time in his brief tenure as Giants’ quarterback, he couldn’t even really give his team a chance. There was a brilliant 35-yard touchdown throw to Darius Slayton. There were, though, two devastating missed opportunities.

Jones missed Sterling Shepard on a deep ball that would have been a touchdown.

Jones also missed Shepard on a third down throw in the back of the end zone, sailing the ball too high for Shepard to stay in bounds. The Giants settled for a field goal.

“Two big missed opportunities. I think when you play a good defense like Minnesota you need to convert those,” Jones said. “I will certainly look at those, but I have to be better in those situations and we have to take advantage of those. You can’t afford to miss those against a team like that.”

Jones and the Giants certainly have hope. The future certainly looks brighter than things have for the Giants in a long time.

Chris mentioned it earlier, but the Giants showed on Sunday that they just aren’t ready yet to make that jump from up-and-coming team to contender.

They offer plenty of hints that their time could be coming. That time definitely wasn’t Sunday. It’s not likely to be Thursday night against the Patriots. In the end, it’s probably not 2019, either.

Defenseless Giants fall to Minnesota

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants were no match for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, losing 28-10 at MetLife Stadium.

The loss, the first of the Daniel Jones era after back-to-back victories, dropped the Giants to 2-3. Minnesota is 3-2.

The Vikings compiled 351 yards of offense in the first half while building an 18-7 lead. Kirk Cousins was 19 of 23 for 278 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

The Vikings did not punt until the fourth quarter.

Stat stuff

Minnesota finished the game with 490 yards of total offense to 211 for the Giants. The Vikings had he ball for 32:40 compared to 27:20 for the Giants.

Cousins went 22 of 27 for 306 yards and 1 touchdown. Minnesota ran for 211 yards

Dalvin Cook ran for 132 yards on 21 carries, 6.3 yards per rush.

Adam Thielen caught 7 passes for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Vikings had seven plays of 20 or more yards, including two of more than 40 yards.

Jones was 21 of 38 for 182 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He was sacked four times.

The Giants ran the ball 20 times for just 64 yards, with rookie Jon Hilliman carrying 9 times for only 20 yards.

A moment of hope

Perhaps the brightest spot in the game for the Giants came in the second quarter, and it was courtesy of a trio of rookies.

A 52-yard kickoff return by Corey Ballentine set the Giants up at midfield. Five plays later, Daniel Jones dropped a beautiful ball in to Darius Slayton, who made a fingertip grab for a 35-yard touchdown. That made the score 10-7 Vikings with 12:16 left in the first half. There were really few other highlight moments for the Giants.

The Giants’ winning streak ends

The New York Giants’ winning streak has come to an end, as they fell 28-10 to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, falling back below .500 in the process.

The stat line wasn’t pretty, with the Giants having a season-worst 211 yards and 10 points on offense, while giving up 28 points which could easily have been more. But that doesn’t mean everything is grim and there is nothing to be learned. There were some bright spots and as the venerable master in every martial arts movie will tell you, failure is the best teacher.

So let’s see what we can learn from this loss.

*FLAG*

This isn’t something we can learn about the Giants so much as the state of football in the NFL.

For the second week in a row it felt as though we saw more of the officials than the football teams. For the most part the flags have been thrown against the visiting teams — the Giants have done well to be flagged just 14 times in the last three games — but this really has more to do with the sheer number of flags being thrown.

Some (even many of them) are obviously earned by the play on the field, but along with the constant confusion about exactly what some of the rules are, games can get tedious to watch. If I’m being perfectly honest, I might have turned the game off if I didn’t have to watch.

I don’t know what the solution is, and I think we all know that the NFL wouldn’t listen even if I did, but the competition committee has to figure something out.

The QB sneak is effective

This is something we have known for ... Forever that the QB sneak is an effective play in short yardage situations. We have seen the statue that is Tom Brady use the play effectively to convert 3rd and 4th and 1 plays for pretty much his whole career. Kudos to the Giants for letting Daniel Jones keep the ball and pick up some short first downs on his own. The speed of the play, with the ball carrier being able to move forward almost immediately from just behind the line of scrimmage, makes it particularly difficult for the defense to counter.

It would have been nice to see it be part of the Giants’ offense a long time ago, but better late than never, I suppose.

The Giants’ offensive tackles struggle against good pass rushers

This isn’t something we have really learned so much as have had confirmed.

It’s understandable to get burned by Shaquil Barrett. He is having a DPOY season, with 9 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 passes defensed, and an interception.

But the Giants have been struggling against just about every defense they have gone up against to keep pressure off the edges from affecting their offense. We expected Mike Remmers to be a stopgap who would hopefully play well enough on most plays to stabilize the right side along with Kevin Zeitler. But the Giants were counting on Nate Solder to play up to his reputation — and contract — and not only be good enough against average pass rushers, but to be able to hold up against the better pass rushers in the NFL.

So far Daniel Jones has been sacked 9 times (with several more negated by penalty or missed by defenders) and hit another 24 times in his first three games. This isn’t a good trend, and something the Giants are going to have to address sooner rather than later. While their schedule might not be daunting in terms of winning percentage, they face a good pass rush nearly every week.

That just is not going to get it done, and offensive tackle is once again going to have to be a priority in the coming offseason.

The Giants should study Anthony Barr

The Giants are getting good pressure off the edge from Markus Golden and Oshane Ximines with Lorenzo Carter on the sideline. Ordinarily, that might spell trouble for a former third-round pick still looking to “get it” at a position he never really played before being drafted.

But while the Vikings handed the Giants’ a bad loss, they might have also given them a way forward and an answer to their linebacker woes. There was talk of moving Anthony Barr from an off-ball linebacker to EDGE when he was drafted back in 2014. After all, 6-foot 5 inch, 255-pound defenders play on the line of scrimmage and generally rush the passer, right? Well, Barr was an athletic, off-ball space player for UCLA and the Vikings elected to keep him in that role, and he has become a key player in a consistently great defense.

Despite how similar the Georgia defense is to the one run by the Giants, Carter didn’t play an EDGE role in college. Instead he was something of an industrial-sized Swiss Army Knife who did a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs’ defense. The Giants should look long and hard about using him in a similar role, perhaps supplanting Tae Davis in the base defense. While Barr is very long for an off-ball linebacker and very athletic for his size, Carter is longer and MUCH more athletic than even Barr.

Perhaps moving Carter to an off-ball position and making Jabrill Peppers the $backer — he has consistently played better as a pseudo-linebacker than as a safety these past two years — could be the best way forward for the Giants’ defense this year.

The Giants aren’t there yet

We saw some good things from the Giants this week. The score was lopsided and could have been much, much worse, as the Vikings had plenty of miscues and missed opportunities between untimely penalties and dropped interceptions, but we still saw some good things from the Giants.

The rookie class made contributions all game long, from the play of Darius Slayton and Jon Hilliman on offense to the work of Dexter Lawrence and Oshane Ximines in the pass rush, to DeAndre Baker keeping a touchdown off the board.

But the Giants just aren’t there yet. They are obviously struggling with injuries to Lorenzo Carter, Saquon Barkley, Wayne Gallman, Alec Ogletree, Tae Davis, and Ryan Connelly, but the issues we saw with those players healthy have persisted. The good news is that the Giants are a young team, relying on rookies and second-year players at nearly every position. There is room for growth, but they aren’t there yet.

Your second-half open thread

The New York Giants trail the Minnesota Vikings 18-7 at the half.

As we’ve often seen with the Giants this season, the opposing team received the opening kick-off. The Vikings engineered back-to-back 11-play drives on their first two possessions, coming away with points and holding the ball for more than 11 minutes. Despite the lopsided time of possession and Minnesota’s success through the air, the game was close for most of the half, largely due to the Giants’ defense stiffening close to the endzone.

The Giants scored quickly on their second drive, starting with a fantastic 52-yard kickoff return by Corey Ballentine and capped by a great throw and catch from Daniel Jones to Darius Slayton.

Unfortunately for the Giants, starting running back Wayne Gallman exited the game in the first quarter with a concussion, which is doubly concerning with this week’s short turnaround.

Giants down to Hilliman, Penny at running back

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Already without star running back Saquon Barkley, the New York Giants lost backup Wayne Gallman to a concussion on their first offensive series.

Gallman took a big hit at the completion of an 11-yard run. He finished the game with two carries for 14 yards.

The loss of Gallman left the Giants with only undrafted rookie Jon Hilliman and fullback Elijhaa Penny at running back.

Hilliman carried the ball 10 times for 33 yards and had a fumble in his NFL debut last week against the Washington Redskins. Penny has five carries for 15 yards on the season.
