Everyone else? That’s a different story

Trailing 28-10 midway through the third quarter, the New York Giants still had a slim chance to make the finish of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys competitive.

The Giants, though, needed a touchdown and they had an opportunity to get one. Having driven from their own 25-yard line the Giants faced a third-and-2 at the Dallas 8-yard line. They gained a yard on a dive play to fullback Elijhaa Penny. Knowing a field goal was useless, they went for it on fourth-and-1. Rolling right, Eli Manning could find no one to throw to, got sacked and fumbled the ball away, more or less ending the Giants’ hopes.

The common denominator on both plays? Neither one was designed to get the ball to the Giants’ best player, Saquon Barkley.

“As a competitor, you want the ball in your hands. But you’ve got to trust the system. You’ve got to trust your teammates. That’s what I do. I’m not going to question the calls. I believe the calls are right,” Barkley said. “As a team, especially on offense, we have to find a way to capitalize and convert that third down and convert that fourth down and find a way to get in the end zone. Things like that, if we are able to do them, could make it a totally different game. Those are things you learn from, go back and you watch and improve on.”

Questioning that decision was left to everyone else. Twitter, of course, obliged.

Coach Pat Shurmur wasn’t second-guessing either of the play calls.

“No,” he said when asked if he had second thoughts. “We should gain more yards on the one to Penny and then we’ve got to do something with the ball we roll out.”

Barkley had 120 yards rushing, but only 11 rushing attempts. This, quite obviously, isn’t enough.

“Games play out differently,” Shurmur said. “ I think he had really good production when he touched the ball.”

To be fair to Shurmur, Dallas did have the ball for more than 11 minutes in the second quarter, and with the lopsided score running the ball was pointless for much of the second half.

“I’m going to do whatever it takes to help my team to win games … I’m a team player. I don’t care how many times I touch the ball. The question is going to be ‘if I got 11 carries, I need the ball more?’ but ‘if I got 40 carries, oh am I worried that I got the ball too much?’,” Barkley said. “I don’t think we’re going to win in that situation there. So, my mindset is to continue to get better and however many touches I do get, try to make the most of it to help my team win. I didn’t do that today and we didn’t do that today.”

With the Giants down 35-17, coach Pat Shurmur pulled veteran QB Eli Manning in place of Jones, with 1:46 left in the game.

Jones completed 3-of-4 passes for 17 yards and ran for another five yards.

Unfortunately, that 5-yard run was New York’s last offensive play of the game. Jones fumbled the ball as he hit the ground, Chidobe Awuzie recovered and the Cowboys offense ran out the clock to seal the victory.

“I just didn’t do a good job keeping the ball,” Jones said. “I held it to my body and let it go. I’ve got to make sure I’m secure with the ball.”

Fumbles were a cause for concern for the rookie quarterback during the preseason as well.

Jones fumbled twice during New York’s preseason win against the Chicago Bears. One of the fumbles came from a poor snap exchange while the other was the result of a strip sack by a Bears defender.

Against the Cowboys Sunday, it appeared that Jones simply had the ball knocked out of his grasp as he was going to the ground.

“It was good. It was exciting to run out there,” said Jones of his first regular-season action. “It being a regular season game has a different feel to it. The circumstance of the game also felt a little different. It was still exciting to be out there.”

Putting Jones in the game, of course, will only fuel speculation about when Jones will take over the starting job from Manning.

“I thought it was the right thing to do to get him some work. We don’t want to fumble the ball like he did. You can see he’s a competitive guy. He’ll learn to run that out of bounds,” said coach Pat Shurmur. “In his mind, he competes and he said, ‘I wanted to guarantee we got the first.’ You’ve just got to secure the ball on that play. For the rest of it, I felt like it was important to get him some work.”

Blowout loss to Dallas didn’t leave much to feel good about

The New York Giants spent the weeks leading up to Sunday’s season-opening game agains the Dallas Cowboys telling anyone who asked that they believed they were a better football team than the one that began 1-7 in 2018 and ultimately finished 5-11.

Maybe they are. In fact, they probably are. They weren’t, though, anywhere near ready to, or capable of, competing with the defending NFC East champion Cowboys on Sunday.

The biggest worry about the Giants heading into not just Sunday but the season in general was how a rebuilt, inexperienced defense would perform. Were they ready for the moment? The answer, on the road against a quality team was absolutely not.

The Giants gave up scores on five consecutive Dallas possessions beginning in the first quarter. None were cheapies. The Cowboys drove 75, 93, 83, 75 and 89 yards for their scores.

The pass rush, which defensive coordinator James Bettcher said during the week was “going to be a group effort” was exactly that. An utterly ineffective group effort.

In 32 dropbacks, the Giants never sacked Dak Prescott. They only laid a glove on him twice as he was carving them up for 405 passing yards and 4 touchdowns.

The pass coverage, even after the Giants spent three draft picks, brought in two new safeties and looked for better coverage linebackers wasn’t good.

Touchdown passes of 28 yards to Blake Jarwin and 25 yards to Randall Cobb looked like busted coverages.

First-round pick DeAndre Baker was victimized for a trio of big plays, including a 62-yard catch by Michael Gallup and a 21-yard touchdown by Amari Cooper.

Cornerback Antonio Hamilton could neither cover nor tackle anyone.

Dexter Lawrence, the 17th overall pick in the draft, was mostly invisible with one assisted tackle.

The offense wasn’t good enough, either. The Giants, after a tremendous opening drive, took advantage of nothing the remainder of the game.

Eli Manning will, of course, catch plenty of blame. Manning wasn’t bad, though, competing 30-of-44 for 306 yards. He, and the offense as a whole, just weren’t good enough to overcome a defense that had no answers for a good Dallas team.

Ir probably would have helped the Giants if Saquon Barkley had more than five first-half carries and if the Giants had bothered to give him the ball on either third-and-2 from the Dallas 8-yard line or fourth-and-1 from the 7-yard line with a chance to get within two scores midway through the third quarter.

All of that aside, what we really learned about the Giants is that they are not ready to play with the big boys just yet.

Which means that after one game, while the Giants are perhaps not at a Defcon 1 crisis level, they are now staring down the barrel of a three-game stretch that will determine whether or not yet another season will spiral out of control before it really has a chance to get started.

The Giants face the Buffalo Bills at home in Week 2, are on the road vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3 and host the Washington Redskins in Week 4. All of those are games against beatable teams.

As Banks tweeted, the Giants have shown us what they aren’t. That being a team with a dependable defense that is ready to challenge the league’s best teams. They will show us what they are over the next three weeks.

Let’s hope it’s better than what we saw on Sunday.

That was not how the Giants wanted to start their season, but what did we learn?

For a few minutes there, it looked like the New York Giants would open their 2019 season with a bang against the Dallas Cowboys. But things quickly went off the rails for New York and they fell to Dallas 35-17 in a one-sided affair that has looked depressingly familiar.

We came in to the regular season with plenty of questions regarding the Giants, and we got answers — not terribly palatable answers, but none the less we learned things about this team.

Saquon Barkley is (still) good

Okay, this isn’t so much “learned” as “confirmed.” He had the first fumble of his NFL career, but immediately followed that up with an explosive 59-yard run, sealed by an block by Evan Engram — who capped the drive with a touchdown catch on play action.

Barkley finished the game with 120 yards on 11 carries, good for 10.9 yards per carry. The only problem? The Giants still didn’t put him in position to really have an impact on the game. They looked to Elijhaa Penny on a third-and-3 that could have kept them in the game, and while they targeted Barkley 8 times over the course of the game, his average catch was only 4.8 yards.

Barkley is a phenomenal player, but the Giants need to unleash him.

The Giants STILL can’t cover a tight end

Blake Jarwin, who the Giants last saw scoring three touchdowns on them in the 2018 finale, scored the Cowboys’ first touchdown of the evening. And in a show we’ve seen time and time again, Jason Witten scored a touchdown (Dallas’ second score). The middle of the field was open all afternoon for the Cowboys, and Prescott did not hesitate to take advantage.

The last time the Giants could effectively limit the damage tight ends Jacquian Williams was on the defense. This is a problem the Giants need to get fixed, but the answers might not be there.

The concerns about the Giants’ defense seem to be warranted

The Cowboys absolutely shredded the Giants’ secondary, picking on Antonio Hamilton and DeAndre Baker in coverage — as well as Antoine Bethea when he was in man coverage. Making matters worse, the Giants’ pass rush was nonexistent, giving Prescott all the time he needed to pick the secondary apart.

The Giants’ run defense was stout enough early in the game, holding Ezekiel Elliott to 4.1 yards per carry, but that doesn’t matter much when Prescott completed 78 percent of his passes for 405 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Hopefully the Giants’ young defense will be able to regroup and come together as the season progresses. They’ve invested a lot in deconstruction and rebuilding of the defense and need it to pay off.

The Giants’ offense has no teeth

New York got off to a fantastic start which looked to silence all the doubters, sprinting down the field to score a touchdown on their opening possession.

And then that was it.

Saquon Barkley got his yards on the ground, but the Giants never really gave him a chance through the air. As mentioned above, Barkley’s targets all came short — as they did a year ago. Evan Engram was the Giants’ most dangerous receiving option and picked up 116 yards and a touchdown on 11 receptions (14 targets), but it never felt like he was a focus of the offense or used to attack the defense. The Giants receivers largely failed to get much separation or make much happen.

As we saw last year, the vast majority of the Giants’ offense took place around the line of scrimmage, and they just spun their wheels. The only time the offense really seemed to get going were on long passes to Cody Latimer and Bennie Fowler. But also, as we saw a year ago, rather than keep with it and attack the defense, the Giants reverted to their short, quick passes, and it wasn’t effective.

The Giants have the players to field an effective offense, but the coaching staff needs to put them in position to do so.

The Giants are now 1-9 in season openers vs. Dallas, including 1-7 in Dallas. The Giants lost season openers there in 2013, 2015, and 2017, and won in 2016.

Spurred by a 59-yard run from Saquon Barkley on their second offensive play, the Giants went 91 yards in 7 plays on their first possession, with Eli Manning hitting Evan Engram for a 1-yard touchdown.

That was about the only good thing that happened all day for the Giants.

After an opening drive punt, Dallas scored touchdowns on five straight possessions. None of those scoring drives went for fewer than 75 yards. The Cowboys led after three quarters, 35-10.

With no pressure applied by a non-existent Giants pass rush, Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott did what he wanted.

Dallas totaled 495 yards of offense. Prescott finished 25-of-32 with 405 yards passing, four touchdowns and a perfect 158.3 passer rating.

Eli Manning completed 30-of-44 passes for 306 yards. Daniel Jones finished up. He played one series in the final two minutes and went 3-of-4 for 17 yards and lost a fumble while scrambling.

Barkley surpassed 100 yards rushing, carrying 11 times for 120 yards. He caught four passes for 19 more yards.

Tight end Evan Engram caught 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.

The Giants had 470 yards of total offense of their own, but were never really competitive after their early surge.

What’s next?

The Giants (0-1) will play their home opener when they host the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium next Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Buffalo is 1-0 after coming back from a 16-0 deficit to beat the New York Jets, 17-16, on Sunday.

Your second-half open thread

The Dallas Cowboys lead the New York Giants 21-7 after the first half of the 2019 NFL season.

The game got started exactly according to plan for the Giants. New York won the opening coin toss, opting to defer — as is their want. They stopped a promising opening drive by the Cowboys and an explosive run by Saquon Barkley put them in position to score, which Evan Engram promptly did on a play-action pass out of a heavy look.

Unfortunately, that was where things started to go off the rails for the Giants.

New York couldn’t keep the lead and surrendered a touchdown on the ensuing drive, painfully as a communication error in the Giants’ secondary let tight end Blake Jarwin into the end zone. Dallas scored again on their next drive, this time to the extremely-venerable Giant Killer, Jason Witten.

The fears about the Giants’ defense appeared justified in the first half as Dak Prescott passed seemingly at will on the Giants’ rebuilt secondary and their pass rush was nonexistent.

The Giants tried a Hail Mary to finish the half, but the ball fell incomplete.

Use this as your second-half open thread.

The Giants will get the ball to start the second half.

Daniel Jones will be the backup quarterback for Eli Manning

We knew two of the six New York Giants inactives with the news Friday that tight end Garrett Dickerson (quad) and wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring) would be out. Now, we know the rest.

Third quarterback Alex Tanney will sit this one out as rookie Daniel Jones will be the backup for Eli Manning. Unless Jones or Manning is injured at some point, Tanney figures to be inactive most weeks.

Running back Paul Perkins will also be inactive. That will leave Wayne Gallman as the lone backup for Saquon Barkley. Fullback Elijhaa Penny can fill in at running back if needed.

The other inactives will be offensive linemen Chad Slade and Eric Smith. That means the Giants will carry seven active offensive lineman vs. the Dallas Cowboys with Spencer Pulley and Nick Gates as the only available backups. Gates would be the fill in at tackle, while Pulley would be the reserve center/guard.
