Giants win for third time in last four games

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants blew a 10-point lead in the final 1:53 of regulation on Sunday, but won the game 30-27 in overtime.

The Giants went 49 yards in eight plays on their opening possession of overtime, leading to a game-winning 44-yard field goal by Aldrick Rosas. The Giants then held on a fourth-and-8 with Janoris Jenkins batting away a desperation pass by Chase Daniel.

The Giants are 4-8. The Bears are 8-4, with the loss snapping Chicago’s five-game winning streak.

Eli Manning finished the game 19-of-35 for 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception, rebounding from a poor first half. Saquon Barkley ran 24 times for 125 yards and had 21 receiving yards, going over 100 yards from scrimmage for the 11th time in 12 games. Odell Beckham Jr, threw a 49-yard touchdown pass and caught a 1-yard pass.

Defensively, Alec Ogletree had two interceptions, including one he returned 8 yards for a touchdown in the game’s opening minute. Rookie defensive tackle B.J. Hill had two sacks for the Giants.

The Giants appeared to seal the game with 2:19 left when rookie safety Sean Chandler recovered a fumble by Chicago’s Taylor Gabriel at the Bears’ 13-yard line. B.W. Webb forced the fumble after a completion. Aldrick Rosas hit a 37-yard field goal with 1:53 remaining to provide the Giants with their final points, and a two-score margin.

The Bears, however, drove for a 21-yard Cody Parkey field goal with 1:13 to go, then recovered the onside kick.

The Bears tied the game with a 1-yard after a pass interference call on B.W. Webb in the end zone gave Chicago a first-and-goal. A pass from Tarik Cohen to Anthony Miller and Parkey’s extra point sent the game to overtime.

Moments that mattered

Kyle gets a uniform: Rookie quarterback Kyle Lauletta was active for the first time in 12 games Sunday as the Giants chose him over Alex Tanney as the backup quarterback.

Another Pick 6 for Ogletree: Alec Ogletree got the Giants off to a fast start, intercepting a Chase Daniel pass and returning it 8 yards for a touchdown to give the Giants a 7-0 lead just 46 seconds into the game.

Ogletree does it again: The Bears drove their 47 to the Giants 23-yard line early in the second quarter before Ogletree snuffed out the drive with his second interception, this one a leaping one-hand grab.

Ode to the “Fridge:” The Bears gave the ball to 332-pound defensive tackle Akiem Hicks on a fourth-and goal at the Giants 1-yard line.
About that range: We have been wondering what sort of range placekicker Aldrick Rosas had. A 57-yard field goal at the end of the first half Sunday, the longest in Giants’ history, gave us a pretty good answer.

Odell for quarterback: Odell Beckham Jr. caught only two passes in eight first-half targets. So, what to do? The Giants let Beckham throw in the second half, and Beckham hit Russell Shepard with a 49-yard pass for a touchdown to give the Giants a 17-14 lead with 12:49 left in the half. Beckham is now 2-for-2 passing this season. Can you say “quarterback of the future?”

Punching it in: The Giants drove from their 40 to the Chicago 1-yard line. After failing to score on three straight plays, Pat Shurmur elected to go for the touchdown with the Giants holding a 24-14 lead. Manning, facing a rush, lofted a touchdown pass to a wide open Beckham to give the Giants a 24-14 lead with 3:58 to play in the third quarter.

It wasn’t easy, or pretty, but it was a victory the Giants can build on

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — There was nothing pretty about Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears for the New York Giants. Except, that is for the final score that the Giants victorious in a 30-27 overtime slop-fest at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants were atrocious on offense in the first half. Five punts, four on three-and-outs, a bad interception thrown by Eli Manning, a field goal. Manning was only 7-of-17 for 73 yards and a 29.8 passer rating in the first half, and it was fair to wonder if Kyle Lauletta would see second-half action if things continued the way they were going.

The combination of Bears’ quarterback Chase Daniel and Giants’ linebacker Alec Ogletree kept the Giants in the game in the first half. Ogletree picked off two Daniel passes, returning one 8 yards for a score just 46 seconds into the game. Daniel also had a fumble, the first of four he would have during the game.

An improvised Odell Beckham Jr. to Russell Shepard 49-yard touchdown pass gave the Giants the lead early in the third quarter.

The Giants couldn’t stand prosperity, though, turning a 10-point lead with 1:53 left in the game into a tie that forced overtime. A botched onside kick recovery with 1:13 to go, a 23-yard pass from Daniel to Tarik Cohen and a pass interference penalty in the end zone on B.W. Webb contributed to the late-game collapse.

“I’m fond of toughness and resiliency, and our team showed that today.” — Pat Shurmur

Even in overtime, with the ball first, the Giants didn’t make things easy. By rule, a touchdown on the first possession of overtime wins the game. The Giants had a chance for one, but a pass from Manning to Sterling Shepard that would have been a game-ending 26-yard score banged off Shepard’s hands. Aldrick Rosas drilled a 44-yard field goal.

The Giants held, but it wasn’t easy. They survived one fourth-down conversion, got help from three Daniel fumbles in the space of six plays, and survived when Janoris Jenkins batted away a desperation fourth-down heave from Daniel to Taylor Gabriel to end the game.

The Giants probably don’t win if Mitchell Trubisky, the Bears’ No. 1 quarterback, was playing. He didn’t play, though, and the Giants did win.

“The takeaway is, and I told the team this - I’ll keep the swear words out of it – some people are fond of talented people, some people are fond of smart people, I’m fond of tough, resilient people,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “When you’re trying to flip culture, when you’re trying to build something, you’ve got to really dig in on that.

“There was some toughness and some resiliency. It would have been easy to cave when they came back, an 8-3 team, came back and tied us up, they had a little bit of juice, a little bit of mojo, but our guys found a way to put points on the board and then stop them at the end. I’m fond of toughness and resiliency, and our team showed that today.”

Don’t look now, but the once 1-7 Giants have now won three out of four. They are a 63-yard Graham Gano field goal and a second-half collapse a week ago against the Philadelphia Eagles from being 6-6 and right in the middle of the NFC East playoff race.

The Giants are learning. They are improving. They are making progress.

“We’re learning how to win, simple as that,” said Russell Shepard. “Early in the season we probably lose that game. We don’t want to be in that situation but at the end of the day we won the football game.”

Building an identity

Two of the Giants offensive linemen talked about the Giants beginning to build something.

“It’s a waste of our time to look back. What we’ve gotta do is look forward. Keep the plow to the ground and it says a lot about the guys,” left tackle Nate Solder said. “We’re not getting caught up in the circumstances. We’re not getting caught up in what people want to tell us our team is. We’re creating our own identity.”

Brown was part of the Los Angeles Rams team that had losing records his first two years, but was a playoff team a year ago and has just one loss this season. The Giants’ 3-1 second half has corresponded to Brown’s insertion into the starting lineup at right guard.

“I’ve seen it. I’ve been a part of it. I think we have the start of the makings to do that here,” Brown said after Sunday’s victory. “The biggest thing we’ve gotta do is stay in the moment and trust the process. Change doesn’t happen overnight. You would love for it to happen overnight, but that’s not really how it works. We’ve gotta just keep chopping at it, chopping at it and eventually it’ll turn around.”

The Giants chopped down a Bears team they weren’t expected to beat on Sunday. It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t clean. It wasn’t without mistakes. It wasn’t without some help from the Bears.

It was, though, a victory. The Giants will take it as they try to finish the 2018 season feeling better about themselves, and feeling like they are pointed to a better future.

It was not, however, the most amazing thing about the momentum-changing play. What was?

How about the fact that Shepard, the wide-open by 20 yards recipient of the pass from Beckham, wasn’t even supposed to be in the pass route. He said he “freelanced” the play.

What was Shepard supposed to be doing?

“Probably blocking Khalil Mack so he could throw the ball,” Shepard said.

Shepard said he saw the Chicago defense all go to the right, where Beckham was moving around behind the line of scrimmage with the ball, and “kinda just snuck through the crease.”

The only question was whether Beckham would find him. Shepard said he was screaming and waving and, just when it appeared Beckham would run with the ball, he pulled up and launched it to Shepard.

“He did an amazing job of seeing me,” Shepard said. “For him to see me and not know I was supposed to be there is crazy.”

“Sometimes you have to draw it up in the dirt,” said Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Beckham said the play was designed for Bennie Fowler.

“I told Bennie (Fowler) I don’t care what happens, I’m going to throw it to you and they double covered him and this grown man (Shepard) from LSU who I’ve played with for a long time, I saw him down the middle of the field and I was like this can’t be real and I just launched it to him,” Beckham said. “It’s all good, he wasn’t supposed to do that, but he’s just playing football and he came up with a huge play for us. Very, very, very big play.”

Beckham said he spoke to his teammates at halftime, with the Giants trailing 14-10.

“I addressed the team at halftime and I told them there’s just something I had to get off my chest. I love these boys,” Beckham said. “Every time I put on a helmet, whether it’s practice or it’s a game, I’m going to give it my all and I feel like I owed them more, to give them all of me and whatever that entails.”

Shepard said he waited so long for the ball to reach him that it was “like a punt.”

“He’s (Beckham) the best person I’ve seen with a ball in his hands. He can hit a home run in an MLB stadium, he can kick a soccer ball. I’ve known him since he was 16, 17 and he’s probably one of the best people I’ve see with a ball in his hands. He kicked a 50-yard field goal a couple weeks ago.”

Shepard’s freelancing, combined with Beckham’s vision and arm, didn’t win the game for the Giants on Sunday. It did, though, give them a chance.

What did we learn from the Giants’ underdog win against the Bears?

This was a long, weird, pug fugly game between the New York Giants and Chicago Bears.

The Giants had plenty of opportunities throughout the game, but failed to capitalize on far too many of them. What could have been the Giants’ first blow-out win in ... a long time, turned in to a torturous overtime win on a cold, misty evening in New Jersey.

It wasn’t pretty, but the Giants came up with the victory, and we get to see what there is to learn from the game.

The Giants never seemed to have much of a plan for the free safety position. First they wanted to move Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from nickel cornerback to full-time free safety, then promptly cut him. Then they gave Curtis Riley a chance to convert to the position from cornerback, and he was then made the starter when Darian Thompson was sidelined with an injury.

Thompson and Andrew Adams — who had both started multiple games at free safety in previous years — were cut just before the season. The team also tried William Gay at the position before cutting him.

Riley has been a liability at free safety throughout the season and the Giants have rotated both Michael Thomas and Sean Chandler onto the field at the position. However, they have yet to find an answer for the position.

The Giants’ defense had the chance to stick a dagger in the Bears’ offense when Riley had an easy interception — only to have it slip through his fingers. That dive culminated in a touchdown and life for the Bears.

Given the importance of the free safety position in James Bettcher’s defense, the Giants need to make a concerted effort to upgrade the position (among several others) after the season.

Odell Beckham is the Giants’ best quarterback

The Giants were stuck in the mud and absolutely lost on offense heading in to the third quarter. Then Odell Beckham happened.

No, not breaking a short slant route for a game-breaking TD catch and run, but rather for his second TD pass of the year. He is the second player since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger to have 5 receiving touchdowns and 2 passing touchdowns.

His TD might have been an easy pitch and catch, but it was still a LONG throw.

Saying Beckham is the Giants’ best QB is a bit tongue and cheek ... But it also kinda isn’t. Beckham is an incredible athlete. It makes sense that he can throw the ball a long way and accurately. Maybe the Giants SHOULD consider him as a potential heir to Eli Manning.

The Giants’ special teams are ... Good!?

Aldrick Rosas should be in Pro Bowl consideration for his work thus far on the season. Not only is he fully capable of putting the ball out of the back of the end zone when the situation calls for it, but he is also capable pooching the kick and giving the coverage team a chance to make a stop and give the defense great field position.

Oh, and he’s 18-for-18 on extra points and 25 of 26 on field goals, having set a new career- and franchise-record long of 57 yards — beating his previous best of 54 yards.

Riley Dixon has proved to be an excellent pick-up after being mediocre in Denver (where the lack of ... air ... is generally seen as an advantage for kickers). Dixon has proven very good at directional punting and pinning offenses close to their own goal line. He’s also been a solid holder for Rosas.

And then there’s the Giants’ coverage units. They haven’t been perfect, but they have been much improved over previous seasons. Part of it has been the relative health of the team — they haven’t had to deal with as many street free agent mid-season replacements as they have over the last five or so years. But also, they have been getting good solid coaching from Thomas McGaughey (and kudos to Tom Quinn for stepping in as McGaughey has fought cancer).

But when you have plays like this, you just have to stand back and give them a hand.

Of course, the special teams gave up the on-side kick on a poor effort from Beckham, but overall they have been an asset, which is rare enough for the Giants.

The Giants’ young defensive tackles are the strength of the defense

If we are going to give out game balls, then B.J. Hill definitely gets one. With three sacks on the day, and five on the season, the rookie defensive tackle has proven to be the Giants’ best pass rusher. We noted his under-rated athleticism after the draft, but he has flourished as his role has expanded (and put in more varied situations).

Along side him, Dalvin Tomlinson hasn’t played as well as hoped when moved into a more full-time nose tackle position with the trade of Damon Harrison, but he has played well. He also remains a versatile player who can create movement on the offensive line from the nose or in a penetrating role.

Mario Edwards Jr. had a pair of costly penalties, but both of them resulted from playing just a little too hard and perhaps a bit out of control. That doesn’t change the fact that he was routinely beating blockers and getting in to the backfield.

Whatever complaints we may have about the Giants’ scouting department, they now how to identify quality defensive tackles. It’s almost too bad that the nature of the league makes it necessary for the Giants to play nickel packages so often and they can only rarely get the three of them on the field at the same time.

Your second-half open thread

The Chicago Bears lead the New York Giants 14-10 after the first two quarters of football.

It all started so promisingly for the Giants when Alec Ogletree blitzed Chase Daniel and came up with a interception returned for a touchdown to give them a 7-0 lead 46 seconds into the game. The defense managed a quick three and out on the next possession to get the offense another chance with good field position, and Ogletree snagged another interception later in the game.

But despite plenty of opportunities, the Giants’ offense simply couldn’t capitalize or do much of anything. Manning was noticeably off in the first half, lacking in precision as he tried to force the ball to Odell Beckham Jr. Meanwhile, the offensive line couldn’t generate much in the way of space for Saquon Barkley.

On the defensive side of things, the Giants’ fast start faltered as they repeatedly gave up the edge in the running game, which put the Bears in position to draw tie the game then take the lead.

The Giants got the ball back one last time at the end of the half, and following a characteristically impressive run from Barkley, Aldrick Rosas nailed a career-long 57-yard field goal.

The Giants will get the ball to start the second half. With Kyle Lauletta active, it remains to be seen if the rookie will get his first chance.

Today, we have a Sunday afternoon matchup between the Giants (3-8) and the Chicago Bears (8-3).

The Giants are coming off their first loss in three games, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles 25-22 at Lincoln Financial Field. The loss dropped the Giants to 3-8 on the season and has essentially erased the team’s chance of making the playoffs.

The Bears, who will be without quarterback Mitchell Tribusky, won last week on Thanksgiving, defeating the Detroit Lions 23-16. Chase Daniel stepped in and led the team to victory, and he’ll try to do the same today.
