Let’s go inside the locker room and find out

What were the New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars saying after Sunday’s 20-15 loss by the Giants in the season-opening game for both teams? Let’s find out.

Saquon Barkley on his touchdown ...

“It was amazing; it was a great feeling, but it was a feeling that came and went. One touchdown is not going to win the game, and that touchdown didn’t win the game this week, but to get in there, it was a dream come true to find the end zone. I did keep the ball, but it was just like ‘Move on, next play’, and find a way to get in there again.”

Barkley on the fourth-down run where he came up short ...

“Fourth-and-one is always tough to get, especially when you have a defense like that. Fourth-and-one mentality is you have to get it no matter what by any-means-necessary. I jumped and I thought I had it, I thought I did enough to keep the sticks moving, but I didn’t and that is something where there’s no excuses that I’m a young player, and I have to realize how important that is.”

Jacksonville coach Doug Marrone on Barkley ...

“We knew he was a really good player coming in. It’s one of those games where you feel like you’re doing a good job, you’ve got a lot of population to the football, you got a lot of people trying to bring him down. Then all of a sudden, bam! He breaks that, whatever it was, 68-yard run ... he’s a heck of a player.”

Jacksonville’s Calais Campbell on Barkley ...

“I knew right away. The first run and the first couple of times I tackled him, I said, “this kid has something.” Obviously, you see it on tape, but we didn’t get to watch a lot of tape on him. It’s his college tape. Coming into the NFL against a team like ours, and making some of the plays he made, that kid’s going to be special. I traded jerseys with him after the game because I was like, “Okay, if he can stay healthy, he might one day be a Hall of Famer. So now, I’ll get his jersey when he’s young.”

Landon Collins on the play of the defense ...

“... we were playing a good offense and their run game is very hard to protect and we were playing good against it so we can definitely build on top of that and just make sure we get the communication right and on the same page as always.

Odell Beckham Jr. on his matchup with Jalen Ramsey ...

“He’s like a brother to me, we kicked it over the offseason, we talked back and forth. He’s a competitor, I’m a competitor, I love the way he plays, I love everything about his game. It was fun to go out there and compete against, if not the, one of the best in the league, hands down.”

Ramsey on facing Beckham ...

“Like I said on Thursday when I was talking to the media, that’s not what it was about. I was shocked when you make it just about me and Odell. It was 11 vs. 11. I knew I would be on him a fair amount, but I wasn’t on him 100% of the time and I knew it was going to take all 11 guys on the defense to get the job done so that’s what we did out here and we got a good win.

Janoris Jenkins on building off the loss ...

“I think we all can build off of it—defense, offense and special teams. Once we get in the film room, we’ll see what critiques we have to make and we’re just going to come out and keep hustling every day.”

Pat Shurmur on the struggles of the offensive line ...

“We battled a really good defense. You’re looking at a top-10 defense and we battled them and I thought they fought throughout the game. We can probably all point to individual bad plays by everyone, me included, so I feel like they battled and we’ve just got to go back and correct the mistakes that maybe showed up and get ready to play Dallas.”

Shurmur on Beckham’s return ...

“I thought he competed throughout, put him in a lot of different situations and I think it’s a good idea to throw him the ball. We threw to him a lot and he made a lot of plays.”

Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles asked if he thought he was going to score on his 41-yard run ...

“No, not once. This isn’t high school. There was no way. I got 30 yards, then the hamstrings locked up and it was time to get out of bounds.”

Giants can’t complete comeback, fall short in season opener

The New York Giants came in to their season-opening game 3-point underdogs, with few believing they would put up much of a fight against the Jacksonville Jaguars. They lost the game 20-15, but came together in the fourth quarter to give the Jags everything they could handle.

Eli Manning completed 23-of-37 for 224 yards and one interception. Saquon Barkly had 18 carries for 106 yards (5.9 yards per carry), a touchdown, and caught 2 passes for 22 yards. Odell Beckham Jr. had 11 catches for 11 yards, and Sterling Shepard caught 5 passes for 48 yards.

The Jaguars took a 20-9 lead with 11:24 remaining when Myles Jack intercepted a tipped pass and took it 32 yards for a touchdown. Saquon Barkley electrified the crown and got the Giants back in the game less than a minute later, going 68 yards for a score with 10:39 left.

The Giants had an opportunity at a game-winning drive, taking possession at their own 19-yard line with 4:10 to play. The drive ended when an Eli Manning pass on fourth-and-6 at the Jaguars’ 36-yard line fell incomplete.

“It’s disappointing when you lose. The one good thing is our team fought from the front to the back. They fought all the way through the game. Unfortunately as is the case in a lot of these games that are close, we just didn’t make enough plays in the end to win the game,” coach Pat Shurmur said afterwards. “It’s unfortunate we lost, we’re disappointed because we lost but we’ve got to move on and regroup and get ready to play Dallas.

Moments that mattered

Saquon Barkley goes off

The Giants looked down and out after Myles Jacks’s pick 6 made the score 20-9, but that feeling lasted a whole two plays before Saquon Barkley blew the metaphorical roof off Met Life stadium. On second-and3 on the ensuing possession, Manning handed the ball off to Barkley, who did to Jacksonville’s defense what he did to Iowa’s.

Your second-half open thread

New York Giants football is officially back.

The Jaguars got the ball first after the Giants won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. With their first possession, the Jags went 59 yards in nearly five minutes, but ended in just three points before the Giants’ offense got the ball for the first time.

It was an inauspicious start for the Giants offense when they took the field. A pair of penalties by Ereck Flowers backed the Giants up to their own goal line, and the team was lucky to get punter Riley Dixon breathing room to get the punt off.

The Giants quickly got the ball back following a spectacular interception along the sideline on the Jaguars’ next possession, but the ensuing drive stalled in the red zone.

Janoris Jenkins nearly came up with another interception — which was still also almost caught for a touchdown by Niles Paul. The result was an incomplete pass which lead to a very long third down attempt, and Leornard Fournette going down awkwardly and limping off the field. He was diagnosed with hamstring tightness and was questionable to return.

The Giants offense showed that they could move the ball against the Jaguars’ formidable defense. However, early penalties knocked the offense off schedule, playing in to the Jaguars’ strengths.

A touchdown from the Jaguars late in the half extended the lead to 13-3, with the Giants responding with a touchdown to end the half.

Eli Manning is 11-of-12 for 98 yards and Odell Beckham Jr. has 5 receptions for 45 yards.

Use this as your second-half open thread, and the Giants will get the ball to start the second half.

The game will mark the NFL debut of Giants running back Saquon Barkley, the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. It will also mark the return to action of Odell Beckham Jr., who will play for the first time since fracturing his ankle in Week 5 of the 2017 season.
A look at some of the top stories from the week and how they might affect things moving forward.

Anyone who has followed me over the years knows that when it comes to the play of New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, I’ve been quick to point out various factors behind his seemingly “declining” play which, as of last year, came to a head.

No running game? Yes.

Losing your top receivers? Yes.

Playing in a scheme that doesn’t really complement what you do well? Yup.

Playing behind a banged up offensive line that offered protection that left a lot to be desired? Absolutely.

Well for those of you who were looking for wholesale changes, general manager Dave Gettleman heard you loud and clear.

Manning now has the type of arsenal that most quarterbacks dream of — a running back who can also double as a force in space; the game’s best receiver; a solid tight end and complementary pieces that give the Giants depth at their skill positions that they haven’t had in a very long time.

While there are still questions about the offensive line, on paper and in the handful of preseason snaps this unit took together, they’re already well ahead of where last year’s opening lineup was.

As for the scheme, the Giants finally have a coach at the helm who is making the scheme all about the players rather than trying to fit square pegs into round holes as the previous head coach and architect of the offense did.

In other words, the stars are aligned for 37-year-old Eli Manning to have the kind of success that has largely escaped him the last few years.

While a legitimate argument can be made that Manning’s arm strength isn’t quite what it used to be, people need to remember that in Pat Shurmur’s eyes, arm strength isn’t as important as making lightning fast decisions, something Manning has always done well.

With a better supporting cast around him, there’s no reason to think that Manning won’t look like his old self out there.

If the Giants are to have any chance of becoming relevant again, they will need him to.

A question I’ve received several times this offseason that I haven’t really been able to answer because reporters weren’t allowed into the locker room until this week is what the atmosphere is inside of the locker room.

Having been in the locker room several times this week, my initial impression is that the players are much calmer this year.

There’s a sense of urgency, don’t get me wrong. But in taking on the personality of their head coach, the players seem to be living in the moment, meaning there hasn’t been any trash talking or chests puffed out to the next county.

The players have been accommodating — probably more so than I can remember of late — and have spoken to the media with a sense of sincerity when it comes to the opponent and for the task at hand.

One thing that has especially struck me as being different is the number of players who are out in the open locker room interacting with their teammates.

I can only speak about the 45 minutes or so the media gets during the day, but I’ve seen far more instances of either position groups hanging around together or guys who in the past might have sought refuge from the areas off limits to the media being in the open locker room.

For example, every day this week, offensive linemen Jon Halapio, John Greco and Will Hernandez were at their respective lockers (Halapio has the corner locker, followed by Greco and then Hernandez).

Whether they were just sitting around shooting the breeze or whatever, that is the kind of cohesiveness that I often thought was missing last year.

Also a somewhat new sight this week was that receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was present in the open locker room virtually every day.

In the past, Beckham would only be seen extensively if it was his scheduled day to speak to the media, but this week, he was out and available, even engaging in a friendly game of cards with teammate Jonathan Stewart while sprawled out on his belly.

Landon Collins, a newly-elected team captain, has always been good about being present in the open locker room. This year, he’s been joined by another team captain, Michael Thomas, who is routinely at his locker where he engages in friendly chats with teammates.

Remember, these are the guys who are gong into battle with one another. The more you get to know each other, the better it is for when split-second decisions have to be made with the game on the line.

The Giants made it official Friday by declaring edge rusher Olivier Vernon (ankle) out of Sunday’s regular-season home opener.

Earlier this week, head coach Pat Shurmur said that Vernon is a “fast healer,” but let’s be realistic.

That Vernon has not been seen since he injured the ankle August 26 is concerning. Usually with an injured player, he at least comes out to work on a side field with a trainer during practice just to work on movement.

Vernon hasn’t even been able to do that so far.

Although it’s too early to wonder about next week, I think you have to face the possibility that until he can get out there and do something — anything — on the field, the Giants could be looking at the very real possibility of having to be without their best defensive player for multiple games.

Who will win? Here is what our writers think

How will the New York Giants fare Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars? Well, nobody knows for sure but that won’t stop us from telling you what we think might happen. Here are this week’s Big Blue View Week 1 staff predictions.

Chris Pflum

I’ve decided, right from kickoff, that I’m going to keep my policy of waiting for proof before I believe. I do believe that the Giants’ offense will be dramatically improved over anything we’ve seen from the team since the first half of 2012. More than the (considerable) talent at the skill positions, I think the scheme will be the biggest change. Eli Manning has never been in a truly “QB Friendly” offense, that not only provides him with quick, clearly defined reads, but also the chance to attack a defense that his personality and competitiveness demands. By the same token, we have never seen Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard in a scheme that actively looks to create mismatches, put defenders in responsibility conflicts, and maximize throwing windows. Considering what the two were able to do in the previous offense, the potential is exciting.

Likewise, I love what the defense has shown so far, particularly when it comes to aggression and variety. They will give up big plays, but that is occasionally the price of the blitz.

But all that said, I just can’t have faith — yet.

The Jaguars had a legitimately great defense in 2017, powered by an unreal success rate when they were able to force offenses into 3rd and long situations. The way to beat them was to make measured gains, keep your offense on schedule, and not let them fully unleash that hyper-athletic defense.

The Giants’ new scheme is well-suited to that style of offense. Pat Shurmur is going to want to run the ball — a lot — throw the ball to his running backs — a lot — and generally keep making a profit on every down. They will absolutely take their shots down the field — It is what Manning thrives on and there is a vertical component built into just about every play. They just need to be patient and pick their spots, but “out-patienting” a defense has never been one of Eli’s strong suits. He is quietly one of the most competitive players around and he would much rather crack the throttle and gun it than cruise at the speed limit. There’s also the problem of the interior offensive line. The guards and center, particularly Jon Halapio and Patrick Omameh, have struggled with speed in the pre-season, with slow hands giving up leverage leading to quick losses. Even more than Ereck Flowers, they will be a concern until they aren’t.

If the Giants can be patient, create and exploit those mismatches, and out-wait the Jags, they’ll have a shot. But this has the look of a team that will be defined by big plays — the question is whether they will make more of them than will be made on them.

Dan Pizzuta

We really have no idea what the Giants are going to look like on either side of the ball. New schemes and new players on both sides, with little shown in the preseason with everything together. The whole offense has yet to play together in a game situation. The defense will start the year not playing together with Olivier Vernon out with an ankle injury. For a team that’s going to rely so much on its stars, that’s not a great start.

The Jaguars are going to have the advantage on both sides of the ball. Jacksonville’s defense was the best in the league last season. They have two great corners that ease responsibilities for the safeties. They have fast linebackers who can cover and get up the field. The defense creates pressure by rushing just four more than any other team in the league. Against an offensive line that has four new players and one in a new position, that line could disrupt everything the Giants plan to do on offense no matter how good the game plan might be.

Jacksonville’s key to winning last season was jumping out to an early lead and sitting on it — the had the sixth-highest average lead per offensive play in 2017.. Blake Bortles had an adjusted yards per attempt of 9.01 in the first quarter then didn’t top 8.0 in any other quarter. With depth in the secondary and pass rush a question, the Jaguars could be in position to get out to that early lead and give them the advantage to play from ahead for the rest of the game.

If there is one thing I’m guilty of, it’s being an eternal optimist.

I look at the changes made on this Giants roster—and we’re talking the WHOLESALE changes that many people were hoping for following a 3-13 season—and I’m loving what I see. I see a group of professional football players with the right attitude, who pay attention to detail and who are hungry to win.

I also see a group of guys who, while cognizant of what happened to this team last season, are determined to do something about restoring the pride in this organization that last year slipped away when the team went into self-survival mode.

With all that said, I’m also a realist. I have questions just like anyone else. Has the Giants defense jelled? Do they have a solution for their return game? Is the offensive line going to be as good as it looks on paper?

We’ll get answers to those questions over the coming weeks but as far as this week is concerned, I do like a lot of the match-ups in this game, and I do think the Giants can not only keep it competitive, but can come out with the upset win.

Final score: Giants 24, Jaguars 21

Andrea Hangst

There is little to indicate that the Giants will have another disastrous, 3-13 season like they experienced last year. There have been so many changes, so many of them that appear to be upgrades, that the Giants look ready to compete in a crowded NFC field. But those changes take time to take hold, and their Week 1 meeting with the Jaguars will be a test of how truly ready this team really is.

Things will come together for the Giants over the course of the season, but this Sunday’s game doesn’t look like a win for New York. Jacksonville has already gotten to the place that this iteration of the Giants are trying to reach—a strong running game, a guarded approach with the quarterback, an aggressive defense that emphasizes turnovers and sacks equally, a conference championship. This makes for a compelling matchup on Sunday, to be sure, and we’ll have a better idea who the 2018 Giants are after it, but Jacksonville has the edge to open the season.

Final score: Jaguars 23, Giants 13

Mark Schofield

Looking at this New York Giants’ roster and the additions that have been made, especially on the offensive side of the football, there is reason for optimism for Giants’ fans right now. But they might have to wait a week for the first victory of the season.

I’m a firm believer in helping your quarterback, and the additions of Will Hernandez, Nate Solder and Saquon Barkley, plus a healthy Odell Beckham and year two from Evan Engram give Eli Manning a ton of help. The offense will be improved over the 2017 iteration.

But it might not be improved enough to put up a lot of points on what was an extremely stout defense last season, and a historically good pass defense. The talent Jacksonville has amassed on the defensive side of the football is enough to keep the Giants’ offense in check, and give the visitors the victory.

Kevin Haswell

While there are high hopes for Big Blue this season, Week 1 won’t go as planned. The Jaguars defense will give the Giants offense, led by veteran Eli Manning fits. The matchup between Odell Beckham Jr. and Jalen Ramsey will be one of the best this season. While I believe it will be a close game, the Jaguars will pull it out late.

Joe DeLeone

While the Giants have improved tremendously since the dumpster fire that was 2017, Jacksonville is too formidable of a foe for this squad to defeat.

The Jaguars posses too many threats in their defensive lineup to counter the Giants weaknesses offensively. Any good game plan will attack the holes of an opponent, and expect Jacksonville’s Todd Wash to exploit Patrick Omameh and Ereck Flowers. Every single player on the Jaguars defensive line has Pro Bowl potential, and a struggling right side of the Giants offensive line will impact the whole game.

Defensively New York does match up well enough to keep Jacksonville out of the end zone most of the game. With Dalvin Tomlinson and Damon Harrison clogging up rushing lanes, run defense should be a strength in 2018. Expect Leonard Fournette to carry the rock 30 plus times on Sunday. New York’s ability to slow down Fournette will be imperative to their success.

I foresee this game being close and relatively low scoring considering how both team match up. However, the Jaguars will squeak by the Giants in a low scoring affair.

Ed Valentine

There is no reason to expect the Giants to win Sunday afternoon. Jacksonville went 10-6 in 2017 and reached the AFC Championship Game. The Giants went 3-13 and went in search of their dignity. The Jaguars have what might be the best defense in football. The Giants have an offense that has never been on the field together in a game that counts. The Jaguars have zero, yes ZERO!, players on their injury report. The Giants will be without their best pass rusher, Olivier Vernon.

And yet ... and yet, I keep coming back to the video by Brett Kollmann that I referenced earlier in the week. The skill position talent possessed by the Giants is as good as that of any team in the league. That makes the Giants uniquely positioned to challenge the talented Jacksonville coverage players. For what it’s worth, Kollmann told me this week he is picking the Giants to pull the upset.

It will take more than talent to succeed against the defense known as ‘Sacksonville.’ It will take the right plan, and enough of the right plays called at the right time. Pat Shurmur brings to the Giants a reputation for being one of the best game-planners and in-game play-callers in the business. And, he’s had a few months to study for this one.

On the other side, the Jaguars were the best rushing team in football last season. They still have Leonard Fournette. They added All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell. Still, the Giants spent the offseason building a stop the run first defense, constructing what they hope will be a wall against the run. If that construction project was as successful as it appeared to have been in preseason, when we know appearances can be deceiving, the Giants are again uniquely positioned to challenge Jacksonville.

I shouldn’t do it, but I am going to drink the blue Kool-Aid this week and pick the Giants to open the season with a big-time upset.

Let’s learn more about Sunday’s opponent for the Giants

We have been studying the Jacksonville Jaguars from a variety of angles this week. Today, let’s go right to the heart, right into Big Cat Country, for some information. Ryan O’Bleness answers our 5 questions about the Jaguars, whom the New York Giants face on Sunday.

Ed: I will turn the tables with a question you asked me. What surprised you the most about how the Jaguars built their 53-man roster?

Ryan: There weren’t a ton of surprises on the roster front, but I was happy to see Tre Herndon, an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt, make the squad. He was the only UDFA to make the initial 53-man roster and worked his tail off throughout training camp and the preseason. I was a little bit surprised to see tight end Ben Koyack -- who had the game winning touchdown reception in the playoff win against the Buffalo Bills -- get waived initially, but the Jaguars signed Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Niles Paul in the offseason. Koyack cleared waivers, however, so he will revert back to IR with some sort of undisclosed injury and have to miss the entire season. The Jags also chose to roll with only three running backs on the active roster, which is a little bit lighter than normal, but not all that shocking.

Ed: Heading into Week 1, any injuries with Jacksonville that are concerning?

Ryan: The Jaguars lost No. 1 wide receiver Marqise Lee (torn ACL) for the season during a preseason tilt with the Atlanta Falcons. This is the second season in a row that the top receiver (Allen Robinson in 2017) has gone down before the first quarter of the first regular season. game has even finished. I guess the silver lining there is that Jacksonville is a run-first team, and has other capable receivers on the roster. Outside of Lee -- knock on wood -- the Jags have been unusually lucky with injuries. The same injury luck was true last season, which helped Jacksonville achieve the success it had. The only notable injury on the active roster is with starting center Brandon Linder who suffered a knee injury in Week 2 of the preseason. With that said, Linder participated in practice on Monday and I expect that to continue throughout the week, so he should be good to go on Sunday.

Ed: How do you see the Jalen Ramsey-Odell Beckham matchup playing out?

Ryan: I’m really looking forward to seeing how this plays out. Odell Beckham is probably a top-three wide receiver in the league, while Jalen Ramsey is a surefire top-three cornerback, and possibly the best in the league at his position. I’m sure both players are going to make plays, but I also imagine the jawing between the two will be pretty intense. I think it will come down to which one can phase out the other one’s trash talk and just play their game. If I had to guess, I would say Ramsey gets the better of Beckham, and by that I mean limits his damage to something like three or four catches with zero touchdowns. Wouldn’t be surprised either way, though.

4. If you could take ONE player not named Beckham off the Giants roster and put him in the Jacksonville lineup who would it be? Why?

Ryan: Interesting question. I’ve always been a fan of Landon Collins, but the Jaguars are pretty set at both safety positions. A part of me also wanted the Jags to draft Will Hernandez early on in the process, but the Jags signed All-Pro Andrew Norwell at left guard in free agency, and A.J. Cann has looked much improved at right guard this preseason. So then, if I can’t have Beckham, I would take Sterling Shepard and see if he could give the Jaguars’ wide receiver corps a boost with Lee out for the year. I do like the young and talented players Jacksonville has there, but they are mostly unproven at this point and I would think Shepard could provide some stability.

Ed: Are you a believer in Blake Bortles? I’m sure there are many who still wonder if the Jaguars can win big with him at quarterback.

Ryan: I am, to a degree, a Bortles believer. With the caveat that I understand what Bortles is and I don’t have crazy expectations. The Jaguars want to play smash-mouth football and run the ball down your throat. The ball is often being taken out of Bortles’ hands, but you also have to deal with opposing teams putting eight men in the box at a higher rate than normal and will need to count on Blake to make plays sometimes. With all of that in mind, this team can win with Bortles, and that was proven last year. Bortles had a very nice playoff run last season, and has looked poised, confident and in better command of the offense throughout training camp. Another underrated aspect of Bortles’ game is his ability to make plays with his feet. He has had both good and bad moments in the preseason games. His teammates trust him, though, as he was named a captain this week. He seems to be in line to have the best season of his career, but it has always been Bortles’ inconsistencies that have caused his biggest issues. If he is able to limit turnovers, make better decisions and make throws in tough situations, then this team will go very far. His play is pivotal.
