Big Blue wins the MetLife Bowl

It was an early game of back and forths until the New York Giants pulled away with a 22-16 win over the New York Jets in a preseason game Friday night at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants defense started on a rough note, allowing an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to start the game which included a few big third down conversions from the Jets’ offense.

A drive later, the Giants forced a three-and-out which resulted in a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown from Hunter Sharp.

Next was a deep pass from Eli Manning only to result in a strip of Jonathan Stewart in the red zone on the next play. The Jets finished that drive with a touchdown — and on it went.

The run game was a big focus during the day and early in the game, but that didn’t work out too well. Stewart got the start, carried the ball three times, lost 7 yards and the ball on the fumble. Wayne Gallman came in on the third drive and played into the second half. He had 11 carries for 23 yards along with four receptions on four targets for 19 yards.

Eli Manning was the most comfortable he looked during the preseason and thrived on play-action passes despite poor support on the ground (crazy how that works). He had six incompletions in his half of work — two were third-down drops from Hunter Sharp and a third appeared to be a miscommunication with Sharp in the end zone. He ended 17-of-23 for 188 yards (8.2 yards per attempt) with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Sterling Shepard was the go-to receiver in the first half with seven receptions on seven targets for 78 yards. He moved around from the outside to the slot and won wherever he was positioned.

Early defensive struggles were a key in letting the Jets get out to an early lead. As has been the case through this preseason, the Jets picked on Eli Apple to start the game. The biggest issue came on the ground, where the Jets gashed the Giants on the first drive. There was again concern with linebackers in coverage. Terrelle Pryor had a 12-yard touchdown reception when he beat slot corner B.W. Webb across the field, but B.J. Goodson was slow to react and pick the receiver up before he turned the corner. But after the touchdown drive, the first-team defense turned it on and stopped the Jets offense.

Among the defensive starters, Dalvin Tomlinson stood out with a tackle for loss in the run game and a quarterback hit that forced an intentional grounding penalty from Sam Darnold.

Davis Webb had a 47-yard pass to Alonzo Russell, and finished 5-of-11 for 73 yards (6.6 YPA) with that 47-yard pass accounting for 64.3 percent of his passing yards.

Rookie Kyle Lauletta got a majority of the fourth quarter, but still came up with limited time to work. Late in the game with the lead, the Giants appeared more concerned with running out the clock than giving Lauletta reps in the passing game. He threw just two passes with one completion for 1-yard despite coming in with over 10 minutes left in the game.

With a shortage at running back, recent signee Jhurell Pressley took over after Gallman and looked smooth on his runs. He had 12 carries for 71 yards with a 20-yard run thrown in the mix.

Moments that mattered

Hunter Sharp’s 55-yard punt return for a touchdown tied the game 7-7 and might have won him a spot on the roster as a kick returner, even if his play as a wide receiver might indicate otherwise.

Your second-half open thread

The first half of the New York Giants’ third preseason game against the New York Jets was a roller coaster for the Giants.

The game started on a rough note as Sam Darnold and the Jets’ offense drove the field on the Giants’ starting defense, largely moving the ball at will en route to a touchdown.

When the Giants got the ball for their first possession they showed some promise, but the running game simply spun its wheels and the defense was soon back on the field. This time the result was much better, with the Giant’s defense quickly forcing the Jets backwards and getting a quick three and out.

Hunter Sharp then got the Giants on the board with a great 55-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was an exciting play and could prove to be the difference in a roster spot for Sharp, but it remains to be seen whether or not it will be enough offset two drives killed by dropped passes by Sharp.

The Giants’ defense once again asserted its dominance, getting the ball back for the offense after four plays, including an intentional grounding by Darnold.

The Giants capitalized on their momentum with a big play-action bomb from Eli Manning that could have been a walk-in touchdown had the pass not been underthrown. The very next play Jonathan Stewart lost the ball, which the Jets recovered and eventually punched in to the endzone for their second score.

The Giants had a second special teams play when Ray-Ray Armstrong, who was on the field with the starting defense as a nickel linebacker, knocked the ball loose on a kick-off return, which was picked up by Jerell Adams. The Giants couldnt’ get the touchdown, but did Aldrick Rosas completed his third field goal to go ahead 16-13. He finished four for four in the first half.

Overall, we are seeing a much more aggressive offense than we have become used to seeing from the Giants. Eli Manning consistently attacked downfield, largely placing the ball well and consistently finding open receivers. Manning finished the half going 17 for 23 (73.9 percent), for 188 yards (8.2 yards per attempt).

On the defensive side of the ball, Dalvin Tomlinson proved to be a difference maker, consistently stuffing the run and creating havoc in the backfield. Meanwhile, preseason monster Kerry Wynn nearly came up with an interception in the Jets’ 2-minute drill.

Evan Engram left the game in the second half and is OUT with a concussion.

The Giants will get the ball to start the second half after the Jets chose to receive the opening kickoff.

Rhett Ellison suffers eye injury, may not return

The New York Giants lost starting tight end Evan Engram to a concussion in the second quarter of Friday night’s preseason game against the New York Jets.

Engram was sandwiched by two Jets defenders after catching a short pass from Eli Manning at the Jets’ 25-yard line with 5:24 left in the half. He was ruled to have fumbled, but was called down by contact after review.

The 2017 first-round pick was immediately taken to the locker room.

Rhett Ellison, the Giants’ second tight end, is also questionable to return with an eye injury.

Let’s learn a little bit about tonight’s opponent

MetLife Stadium will be all decked out in green Friday night as the New York Giants “visit” the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Let’s check in with ‘JohnB’ of SB Nation’s Gang Green Nation to learn more about the Giants’ hosts this evening.

Ed: I have to start with the obvious. What are your impressions of Sam Darnold thus far?

John: So far he has looked pretty good. The preseason stats don’t look all that spectacular, but when you go back and watch the plays he’s been consistently making the correct read. The best thing I can say about him is that he doesn’t look like he’s in over his head. That hasn’t been true of other recent Jets young quarterbacks. He has shown the necessary skills a quarterback needs to have to succeed in this league, making good reads pre-snap and post-snap, displaying good ball placement, and moving within the pocket. He also has flashed some of that playmaking ability that made him such a great prospect.

Based on the way the Jets are using him and what the coaching staff is saying, I think the team is trending in the direction of making him the Week 1 starter. If he has a miserable game against the Giants that might change, but it feels like it would take something dramatic for somebody else to be under center.

I think any Jets fan needs to be realistic. Darnold is a rookie, which means there are probably going to be some growing pains. He’ll have some weeks where he looks miserable, especially on an offense that has some personnel shortcomings. But based on the skills he has, I’m not sure there’s much to be gained by keeping him on the bench at this point.

Ed: Teddy Bridgewater is quite a story. Is it possible the Jets use him as the starter early on to try to bump us his trade value, then deal him to a team in need of a QB?

John: If Darnold falters against the Giants, I think it’s plausible that Teddy Bridgewater could be the Week 1 starter. I also think it’s possible he could be traded. I don’t think the reason he would start would be to boost his trade value, though. If the Jets think Darnold is ready, I don’t see them delaying the start of this new era just to try and squeeze a slightly better pick out of another team by showcasing Bridgewater.

I do expect Bridgewater to get more reps over the last two weeks of the preseason than he otherwise might to showcase that he is recovered from his knee injury.

Ed: If you could take ONE player off the Giants roster and put him into the Jets lineup, who would it be? Why?

John: I know there are a few antics to deal with, but I think any offense would benefit a ton from adding Odell Beckham, Jr. There aren’t many non-quarterbacks who chance the entire complexion of an offense just by setting foot on the field the way Beckham does.

Ed: Tell me why, in your mind, the Jets will be better than the Giants this season?

John: That’s a tough question to answer because:

A. I’m not sure that they will be.

B. Part of that depends on the Giants having a bad year, and I could go either way on the type of season they will have.

Realistically, this Jets team is probably a year away from being a playoff team. There are too many issues on the offensive line, and they don’t have a quality edge rusher. The scenario where the Jets have a big year probably involves Darnold having an Andrew Luck rookie season and big ticket free agent signing Trumaine Johnson compensating for the lack of an edge rush by locking down the opponent’s best receiver each week. And that’s possible. It’s just not something I’d like to bet on. We’re talking about a rookie quarterback and a cornerback who is talented but could not currently be considered one of the game’s elite shutdown men.

Ed: Tell me about some under the radar players on the Jets roster we should watch for Friday night?

John: Former Titans seventh-round pick Tre McBride is making a strong push for a roster spot at a crowded wide receiver position.

Rookie running back Trenton Cannon was flashing in training camp practices but has been recovering from an injury. He just got back.

I think the big under the radar guy is the second player the Jets drafted, Nathan Shepherd. Obviously, the focus has all been on Darnold, but Shepherd has a pretty incredible story. He played college football at a Canadian college. He had to leave the school because he couldn’t afford to pay tuition. He worked a number of jobs, including one at a box factory, one as a bouncer, and one at a nursery among others. He ended up at Division II Fort Hays State. Shepherd got onto NFL radars with a strong Senior Bowl week. The Jets picked him in the third round, and now he’s about to earn a starting job as a rookie after a strong training camp and first two preseason games.

The two franchise-changing rookies are linked for a number of reasons

Saquon Barkley said this week that any comparison to New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold “doesn’t cross my mind.” Nor should it. All that should be on Barkley’s mind is being the best player he can be for the New York Giants.

‘Locked on Giants’ podcast co-host and Big Blue View contributor Patricia Traina is bugged by comparisons between the Giants rookie running back and the Jets rookie quarterback. She told me the other day that it’s an apples to oranges comparison because of the different positions they play.

Her point is valid. Direct statistical comparisons can’t be made. Still, in my view it is inevitable that the two will be compared. In fact, they HAVE TO BE compared.

How can they not be?

How the two got where they are, the two franchises they play for, the fact that they went back-to-back in the draft, that many thought the Giants would and should select Darnold, that both down-trodden teams are basing large chunks of their futures on these two young men. All bind the two.

Like it or not, there is no way not to compare them.

And, ultimately, debate which team will be proven right. Not this year. Not next year. Not five years from now. Not 10 or 15 years from now.

This was the perfect storm. Two teams sharing a stadium, and the biggest media market on the planet. Both down on their luck and, after some wheeling and dealing by the Jets, picking second and third in the 2018 NFL Draft. Both looking for difference-makers who could be central figures in their success for the next decade.

Maybe both teams will be right.

Maybe both players will be stars. Maybe both will help lead their teams to championships. Or, at least to the point where making the playoffs and having a chance to contend for titles becomes the norm rather than the exception.

There is no doubt both sides are happy right now with the choices they made.

Barkley looks like a star. He is an amazing weapon as a pass receiver. He is a big-play threat as a running back. He works incredibly hard. He says the right things in the right way. He looks and acts like what the Giants hoped he might become — the future face of the franchise.

Darnold, incredibly talented but at barely 21 years of age thought by some to still need time before he was ready to lead an NFL team, looks more and more like the Jets Week 1 starter. He has gone 21-of-29 (72.4 percent) for 158 yards with a touchdown and an interception in two preseason games. It’s too early to make a definitive judgment, but Darnold thus far looks like what the Jets hoped they were drafting — a franchise quarterback.

The Jets have the easier path to being right.

Darnold doesn’t have to be better than Barkley. He was selected after the Giants’ rookie. The Jets were never taking Barkley, anyway. They were always taking a franchise quarterback, they made that intention perfectly clear when they traded up from No. 6 in the draft to No. 3 to guarantee they would be in position to get their guy.

Darnold only has to be better than Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson — the quarterbacks taken after him. The last time the Jets had any real stability at quarterback was when Chad Pennington was the starter in five of six seasons from 2002 to 2007. Darnold needs to give them that stability. If the third overall pick can do those things, the Jets will have been right.

The Giants’ path is more complicated.

All of what I’m about to say comes with the acknowledgment that while I was in favor of selecting Darnold at No. 2, I ultimately really like what they did. They have Eli Manning under contract this season and next, believe he can still get the job done, and committed wholeheartedly to doing everything possible to win with Manning in the short term.

The Giants didn’t love Darnold, or any of their other quarterback options at No. 2. If he turns out to be a bust, or never more than a middling quarterback who functions as a placeholder while his team searches for the “real” guy, they will be right.

If Darnold is a star, or at least a very capable quarterback with the ability to excel in big games and win titles, the Giants’ path to being right is more difficult.

Barkley has to be good. That much is obvious. There’s no reason to believe he won’t be good. Really good. Maybe some day Hall of Fame good. It doesn’t, however, end there.

The Giants have to be right about Manning. They have to win. Maybe not Super Bowl titles, but they have to get to the playoffs and contend in the short term. That is the path they chose, the intention they announced by selecting Barkley and committing to Manning. They have to avoid what GM Dave Gettleman calls “quarterback hell” once Manning’s time is up.

Can they do all of those things? Sure. It’s just not as straightforward as “Barkley’s really good, so the Giants made the right choice.” As much as we would like it to be.

As for the Barkley-Darnold comparison, that simply can’t be helped. And, it’s not going away any time soon.
