Coach assesses team’s preseason opener

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — What did New York Giants’ coach Ben McAdoo think of his team’s preseason-opening 20-12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night? Here are some takeaways from his post-game remarks.

Overall impression ...

“Some good effort out there tonight. We had a lot of work to do, and we got some good tape on some guys who were on the bubble – a lot of teaching tape. They’ll have the day off tomorrow to get their bodies right and get back to work on Sunday.”

On the play of Davis Webb ...

“I thought he had some ups and downs in there. He competed nicely, came out of the pocket, had some chances to make some plays, he did fairly well.”

On the first-team offensive line, which gave up three sacks early in the game ...

“It was more than just the offensive line, it wasn’t just the offensive line. I’ll have to go back and take a look. There was a mistake on the outside where the quarterback had to eat the ball on one occasion. Then there was one extended play, where we had to throw the ball away. So, we can’t blame the offensive line.”

On the placekicker competition ...

”I thought both kickers kicked real well. I’ve never been so excited to kick a field goal.”

On the running game after the Giants gained 46 yards on 13 carries, 3.5 yards per attempt ...

“There’s some good and some bad; there’s some bad and there’s some ugly. We need to clean it up and get better.”

Rookie QB calls debut “a good starting point”

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — There were no heroics from Davis Webb in his first appearance as a professional quarterback. In the final 6:39 of the fourth quarter Friday night there was, however, a glimpse of the talent that convinced the New York Giants to select him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft in he hopes that he would become their quarterback of the future.

Webb entered with the Giants trailing the Pittsburgh Steelers, 20-12. There were promising moments in both drives when it looked like he might be able to engineer scoring drives, but both fizzled.

Webb ended up 8-of-16 for 67 yards.

“I’ve got a long way to go but this was a good starting point for myself, but I know I have to continue to get better,” Webb said. “The best part is I’m going to. I’m going to work really hard, get in the film room tomorrow and kind of build off this. It’s a good starting point and I look forward to getting better next week.”

Yes, it was a good starting point for Webb.

He admitted to being “amped up” for his first play, a slant route that he whipped well over the head of wide receiver Kevin Norwood.

After that, though, Webb settled down and appeared to have control of what was going on. He felt really good about his command of the huddle, something which wasn’t used at Cal.

“I felt great about that. That’s something I was really proud of that I think I did a good job tonight. I was very confident,” he said.

What he didn’t feel good about was failing to put points on the board.

“I need to do better in the last two minutes,” Webb said. “I wanted to help us win a game today and get us into overtime. Just couldn’t do it. There were a couple bad throws, and that’s what got us.”

Keeon Johnson can’t haul in a deep ball from Davis Webb. Brian Allen of Pittsburgh is defending.

Webb’s first drive started at the Giants’ 14-yard line. He guided the Giants to two first downs before the drive stalled.

His final drive began at the Giants’ 24-yard line with 3:10 left and the feeling that maybe, just maybe, the rookie was about to do something special. He almost did.

Webb moved the Giants to the Pittsburgh 39 with 1:55 left before a sack pushed the ball back to the 43. He then unleashed a throw deep down the left sideline to wide receiver Keeon Johnson that appeared to have a chance to be a big play. Johnson and Pittsburgh cornerback Brian Allen both got their hands on the ball, and it fell incomplete.

“When it came off the hand I felt pretty good about it. But, hey, I gotta get it more up and down. Safety made a good play. I need a better ball,” Webb said. “When I let it go I felt good about it. I thought we’d be at the 15-yard line, 20-yard line, whatever and we’d be rolling. But that’s football. Next play. I didn’t make that fourth-down play … I’ve gotta make that throw to Jerome at the end of the game.”

“That throw” Webb is referring to was the next play, a fourth-and-9 the Giants needed to convert to have a chance. Moving to his right, Webb sailed a pass over the head of wide receiver Jerome Lane, ending the idea Webb would do something heroic in his debut.

“I’m excited to get watching tonight and watch tomorrow with the coaches. I’m just really excited to dig in and get better from this. It’s my first game, I’m going to get a lot better,” Webb said. “I’m just excited to watch myself at MetLife against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s gonna be cool to watch. But again, there’s a lot of things I need to work on.”

The game didn’t end in the victory Webb and the Giants for, but both he and Giants fans have a right to feel excited by what they saw from the guy the franchise hopes will be the heir to Manning.

Odell Beckham Jr., Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Jason Pierre Paul and Eli Manning all dressed for the game but did not play. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard did not play as he is recovering from an ankle injury.

Josh Johnson started at quarterback for the Giants, finishing the night 5-of-10 for 31 yards. Geno Smith relieved Johnson and went 10-of-16 for 114 yards and an interception. Davis Webb finished the game for New York. Webb threw for 31 yards on 5-of-10 passing.

Big Blue had five different backs get carries. Orleans Darkwa led the team in rushing with 18 yards on three carries. Jerell Adams led in receiving with three catches for 28 yards.

Moments that mattered

The Giants got the scoring started in the first quarter following an interception of Pittsburgh rookie quarterback Josh Dobbs by Valentino Blake. The interception set up a 27-yard field goal by Aldrick Rosas.

In the second quarter, the Giants defense intercepted Dobbs once again, this time by defensive end Devin Taylor. The Giants failed to capitalize on yet another possession, settling for a 30-yard field goal by Mike Nugent.

The Steelers answered back in the second quarter with the third field goal of the night. Dobbs led the Steelers on a nine-play, 59 yard drive to set up a 48-yard field goal by Chris Boswell.

The Giants, led by quarterback Geno Smith, then went on a nine-play, 47-yard drive to set up a 52-yard field goal by Aldrick Rosas, his second make of the night.

Defensive back Donte Deayon muffed a punt right before the half, leading to a 28-yard touchdown pass by Dobbs to Cody Hamilton.

Geno Smith started the second-half at quarterback, leading the Giants on a 12-play, 30-yard drive, ending with a 45-yard field goal by Mike Nugent, his second of the night. The make gave Big Blue the early second-half 12-10 lead.

Authur Moats intercepted Smith in the middle of the third quarter and returned it to New York’s 14-yard line. The Giants defense held the Steelers to a 37-yard field goal by Chris Boswell. The make gave Pittsburgh the lead 13-12.

Following a three-and-out by the Giants offense, Steelers’ rookie quarterback, Bart Houston, out of Wisconsin led Pittsburgh on a nine-play, 53-yard drive capped off by a 15-yard touchdown run by Terrell Watson. Following an extra point by Boswell, the Steelers led, 20-12.

What’s next?

The Giants will play in their second preseason game on Aug. 21, when they will head to Cleveland to take on the Browns. The game can be caught on ESPN at 8 p.m. EST. The Browns started their preseason slate with a 20-14 win over the New Orleans Saints.

It’s not time to panic — yet

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Two series into Friday night’s preseason opener, Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie outside linebacker T.J. Watt already had two sacks of New York Giants’ quarterback Josh Johnson. Since Watt lined up over much-maligned Giants’ left tackle Ereck Flowers, the alarm bells — and the Flowers hate — started quickly.

The Giants and Steelers feature two of the best receivers in the game today, but which means more to his team?

The New York Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Antonio Brown: they are two of the top three wide receivers in the NFL.

They are both transcendent talents and despite the differences in how they came in to the league, there are some significant similarities between the two. Both are undersized according to the NFL’s physical archetype for a “Number One” receiver — Neither measures up well to the physical traits of Julio Jones or A.J. Green.

They are both savvy route-runners, who play everywhere on their offense. They both play with a barely-bridled passion that has occasionally drawn sideways looks from more “Old School” observers.

Beckham and Brown were drafted by “Flagship” NFL franchises, connected by history and blood ties — The Giants and Steelers are as good as football “cousins”. They also catch passes from a pair of Hall of Fame bound quarterbacks inextricably linked as the standard bearers of one of the greatest quarterback draft classes in League history. Both players are production machines, turning scores of targets into points and yards for their offense.

But which one means more to their team?

As it turns out, that is a question much easier asked than answered.

Football is a many-layered and complex game with intertwining variables on every play. For instance, while Eli Manning has played every game since Beckham was drafted, 48 games, Beckham has missed five of them. On the flip side, Antonio Brown has played 47 games in that span, but Ben Roethlisberger has only played 43.

It hardly seems fair to compare games Manning has played with Beckham to ones Brown has played without Roethlisberger, and vice versa. To help make the stats more comparable, I filtered out the games those games affected by injury (and one suspension). Let’s take a look at what I got from the raw data.

Since 2014, when Beckham came into the league, Brown has been the more productive player, with 59 more receptions for 352 more yards. Both, however, have the same number of touchdowns — a league-leading 35 over that span.

In that span the Giants offense was based on the pass, with Eli Manning attempting 63 more passes. But despite seeing fewer passes thrown, Brown was targeted by a higher percentage. He saw 485 of Roethlisberger’s 1,586 passes (30.5 percent, or roughly 11.5 targets per game), compared to Beckham being the target of 457 of Manning’s 1,649 passes (27.7 percent, roughly 10.6 targets per game).

At first blush, it would seem that Brown hasn’t just been the better receiver over that span, but more important. But, as I said before, football is complicated. Brown, and the Steeler offense, has one important piece for which the Giants — and pretty much every other team — simply don’t have an analogue: Le’Veon Bell.

So let’s take things a step further and look at what each receiver means for their offense as a whole, and not just for their quarterback.

In the 42 games that Roethlisberger and Brown have played together since 2014, the Steelers scored 118 touchdowns. Of them, Brown’s 35 touchdowns makes up 29.6 percent of the Steelers’ offensive out-put. In the same time period, the Giants have scored 104 touchdowns, 33.6 percent of which came from Beckham.

And while Brown has had more yards than Beckham since 2014, so have the Steelers as an offense. With both Brown and Roethlisberger on the field, Brown was responsible for 4,474 of the Steeler’s 16,946 yards (26.4 percent). Beckham’s 4,122 yards accounts for 26.8 percent of the Giants’ 15,349 yards with him on the field.

Perhaps the clearest representation of how much each team relies on its star receiver came when they were knocking on the door to the end zone. Beckham has been a much more important weapon inside the 20-yard line, receiving 26 red zone targets in 2016. That is eight more than Brown’s 18 targets last year, per NFLsavant.com.

Given the makeup of the two rosters, that really shouldn’t be surprising. The Steelers have had a better and more varied cast of weapons on offense — including a dangerous running game. Since 2014, Pittsburgh has had 39 rushing touchdowns (with and without Roethlisberger), while the Giants have had a paltry 24 rushing touchdowns — more than half of which came in 2014.

All of this just goes to reinforce what our eyes have said for the last three years. That both players are exceptional, and in a vacuum Brown is probably — marginally, right now — the better receiver. However, if the Steelers were to be without him, they could field a viable offense built around Bell.

It is almost impossible to imagine the Giants fielding an offense without Beckham. The one time they had to do so since his debut in Week 5 of 2014, it was a painful 49-17 rout that saw Eli Manning taken out of the game before the final whistle. The team, and especially Manning, have to hope that Beckham won’t have to be THE offensive weapon for the Giants. Hopefully, Sterling Shepard will take a step forward and build on his 2016 season, the running game will get traction, and the additions of Brandon Marshall and Evan Engram will help to balance the offense and take the load off Beckham’s shoulders.

It’s also important to keep in mind that Odell Beckham has only played just three seasons in the NFL. When he exploded onto the scene in 2014, Brown was entering his fifth year in the league. Considering the unreal numbers Beckham put up almost immediately and how he rocketed to the top of the “Best Receiver” conversation, it’s easy to forget that he is being talked about with players in their primes who have played twice as many seasons as he.

It still boggles the mind that Beckham has accomplished what he has in less than three full seasons — that it wasn’t until Brown’s fourth season that he dominated the stat sheet like Beckham has since his rookie year.

Neither player will likely take the field Friday night in the teams’ preseason opener. And while the fans are going to be missing out on the show, both receivers are too important to their respective teams to risk in the first exhibition game.

Especially, though far from overwhelmingly, Odell Beckham.

Which Giants have seen their stock rise or fall thus far in training camp

On Friday night, the New York Giants will play their first preseason game of the 2017 preseason. With projected regular season starters playing a limited time or not at all, these preseason games are the best extended chance for others to cement their roles or just make the roster.

While preseason performance can be a big part of the evaluation of these players, they have been practicing in training camp over the past few weeks. Before the Giants hit the field on Friday night, we decided to take a quick look at some of the few players who have seen their stock rise and some who have seen their stock fall during training camp.

Things like playing time, projected roles, and injuries were considered for those who appear. One consideration for stock down, Mykkele Thompson, was already released earlier today.

Of course these types of lists are going to be very fluid throughout the preseason and only represent how we believe these players might currently be viewed.
