Can he keep hold on backup job?

Kerry Wynn has been a useful, if unspectacular, reserve defensve end for the New York Giants since making the roster as an undrafted free agent in 2014. Can Wynn hold on to a roster spot in 2017?

Let’s take a closer look as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

Wynn played in 14 regular-season game. He totaled 12 tackles (six solo) and a half-sack. He played only 117 defensive snaps, or 10.54 percent.

2017 Season Outlook

A restricted free agent, Wynn re-signed with the Giants after drawing some interest from the New England Patriots. That, however, does not mean the 6-foot-5, 264-pound 26-year-old is a lock to make the 53-man roster.

Wynn is a dependable player, an effort player who is useful in spot duty. He is not, however, a dynamic pass rusher and he was exposed in 2015 when he had to play more with Jason Pierre-Paul sidelined.

Wynn faces a serious challenge for a roster spot this time around. Romeo Okwara is a second-year player who showed flashes of potential last season. The Giants drafted Avery Moss in the fifth round. They signed Devin Taylor, a player who has had more success than Wynn as a pass rusher, in free agency. Owamagbe Odighizuwa is still part of the roster.

The Giants know what Wynn will give them. Question is, will it be enough to keep him on the roster?

Team wanted a long-term answer at punter when they traded for him, and they got one

You have to be somebody to get a musical (if you call what she does music) shout-out from Nicki Minaj. So, Brad Wing is somebody. More importantly, he also happens to be a very good punter for the New York Giants.

Let’s talk about Wing as we near the end of our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

Measuring punters purely by statistics is tricky. Their numbers can be affected by the field position from which they are asked to punt, how often they are asked to punt, how well the players on the punt coverage team do their jobs, and other factors.

By pretty much any measure, though, Wing had an excellent 2016 season.

Wing averaged 46.2 yards per punt. Pure distance, though, is not the best way to judge a punter’s effectiveness. His net average of 40.9 yards per punt was also a career-best, and ninth in the league among punters with at least 50 attempts.

Wing hit 28 of his 93 punts (29.7 percent) inside the 20-yard line. That is actually down from 2016, when 33 of his 76 punts (43.4 percent) landed inside the 20. Perhaps, though, that is a function of where Wing was punting from. The only way to know for sure is to chart the yard line each of his punts came from. Eight of Wing’s 93 punts (7.9 percent) went for touchbacks.

2017 Season Outlook

When the Giants traded for Wing at the beginning of the 2015 season, they were hoping they had acquired a young guy who could be their punter for several seasons. With Wing, they appear to have done so.

There are still holes in the 26-year-old’s game. Mostly, Wing is still striving for the consistency that would put him among the league’s truly elite kickers. The 2017 season might see him take another step in that direction.

“He's got a tremendous work ethic,” said special teams coordinator Tom Quinn. “As his confidence grows and you could see the true ability come out, and he's got a lot of ability. He's very talented.”

Can he find a spot on crowded defensive line?

For me, often times the interesting part of working through profiles of the players on the New York Giants’ 90-man roster is often looking at the fringe players. What is their story? Do they have a real chance to make the team? What is their path?

Looking at defensive end Jordan Williams, a player who was signed to the team’s practice squad late last season and is on the 90-man roster via a reserve/futures deal, it is hard to find that path to a place on the 53-man roster.

There are, quite honestly, too many talented players in front of him.

2016 Season In Review

After playing in one game for the Miami Dolphins in 2015, the former undrafted free agent out of Tennessee began the year on the Miami practice squad. He was released in late September, and the Giants added him to their practice squad in early December. He was signed to a reserve/futures contract for 2017.

2017 Season Outlook

Unless there are a rash of injuries, it is hard to see the 6-foot-4, 276-pound 24-year-old having a shot at more than the practice squad. There is too much depth, and too many players the Giants are already heavily invested in, in from of him. Even if Owamagbe Odighizuwa does not play in 2017.

Undrafted free agent bidding for roster spot as reverse tackle

The New York Giants did not prioritize adding to their offensive line during the 2017 NFL Draft, waiting until the sixth round to select offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty. They did sign some interesting offensive line prospects as undrafted free agents, including former USC left tackle Chad Wheeler.

GM Jerry Reese singled out Wheeler as a player he was happy to bring to the Giants:

"Wheeler was a left tackle at USC. He had some issues. I think probably the reason he didn't get drafted is there were some off-field issues people were concerned with. But to get him as a free agent, we feel like he has a chance if he has his head on right. He was a talented player, but some off-field issues probably kept him from getting drafted,” Reese said.

What can Wheeler do for the Giants in 2017? Let’s consider that as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the team’s 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

Wheeler finished off a career at USC that saw excel as a four-year starter. I have used this summary before, but here is what CBS Sports draft analyst Dane Brugler wrote about Wheeler in his 2017 NFL Draft Guide:

A four-year starter at USC, Wheeler earned the left tackle job early in his career and didn’t relinquish the post despite multiple injuries and setbacks, finishing his Trojans career with 45 career starts. He has a NFL frame with the movement skills to cut off speed and handle edge quickness around the corner. Wheeler trusts his technique, but has obvious core strength issues, limiting his ability to drop his hips and anchor. He doesn’t match power-for-power and struggles to sustain blocks. His collegiate résumé, including First Team All-Pac 12 honors as a senior, looks great on paper, but his checkered medical and off-field history are both red flags. Overall, Wheeler has the natural athleticism and talent to compete for starting reps in the NFL, which will also depend on his reliability.

2017 Season Outlook

The Giants used Wheeler as the second-team left tackle behind Ereck Flowers during OTAs and mandatory mini-camp. That doesn’t mean they see the 6-foot-6, 310-pound rookie as a threat to Flowers, or even as the 2017 backup, but it does indicate they see him as a potential future left tackle.

One look at his frame tells you that Wheeler is going to have to get stronger to be a legitimate NFL lineman. So does the fact that his 15 bench-press reps of 225 pounds puts him in the second percentile of tested offensive linemen. Here is his odd-looking spider chart, which shows some really good physical traits and some really awful athletic ones compared to other players at his position:

My view? I believe Wheeler is likely headed to the practice squad, where he can work on getting stronger for a year. If the Giants don’t sign someone like Ryan Clady as a veteran swing tackle, Bisnowaty or Justin Pugh seem like the probable fill-in options should something happen to Ereck Flowers.

Rookie likely headed for redshirt season

Can third-round pick Davis Webb be the heir apparent to Eli Manning as franchise quarterback of the New York Giants? Maybe, but that is probably still a few seasons down the road — if it happens at all.

What can the Giants get from the rookie now? Let’s take a closer look as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the team’s 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

Webb succeeded 2016 first overall pick Jared Goff as quarterback at Cal, and put up big numbers. He completed 382-of-620 passes (61.6 percent) for 4.295 yards, 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. That was a passer rating of 135.6.

Webb was the fifth quarterback selected in the draft.

2017 Season Outlook

If everything goes the way it is expected to go, the only time you are going to see Webb in action this season is during training camp or in preseason games. The upcoming season is supposed to be a red-shirt year for Webb, who is facing a big adjustment after playing in a no-huddle Air Raid offense during his collegiate career.

Unless things go awry, the only times you see Webb during the regular season should be when cameras show him on the sidelines wearing a baseball cap.

When the Giants drafted Webb, head coach Ben McAdoo made it clear he did not expect to see Webb playing as a rookie.

“I think it’s tough to come into the league and be a number two. I don’t think there are very many guys, even in this draft, that can come in and be a number two quarterback,” McAdoo said. “I think it’s challenging, it’s asking an awful lot. It’s a different game and it’s a challenge. It’s a benefit to be able to sit behind especially a veteran quarterback and learn. It goes a long way.”

So, even if something happens to Manning don’t expect the Giants to turn to Webb just yet. Someday, just not quite yet.

Olivier Vernon | William Hauser-USA TODAY Sports

Defensive end a force to be reckoned with

Coming off four straight playoff-less seasons and desperate to infuse an embarrassingly bad defense with talent, had the New York Giants lost their collective minds? They were going to give $85 million, $52.5 million of it guaranteed, to defensive end Olivier Vernon to be the center piece of their re-structuring?

The same Olivier Vernon who had one double-digit sack season in four years with the Miami Dolphins? Who had never made a Pro Bowl? Who had never even been the best defensive lineman on his own team? That guy was going to be one the top three highest-paid defensive ends in the NFL?

Yep, sink or swim that was the plan. Pay Vernon and hope that Jason Pierre-Paul still had enough left to revitalize a pass rush that had been mostly missing in action the previous season.

Free agent plans often sink, but this one worked out swimmingly, with Vernon more than doing his part in his first year with the Giants. Let’s take a closer look as we near the conclusion of our series of player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

The raw numbers:

Tackles (64, a career-high, including 46 solo)

A team-high 17 tackles for loss

Sacks (8.5, a team high)

Hurries (37, second in the NFL)

Snaps played (1,040, 93.69 percent — most in the league among defensive ends)

Vernon was everything the Giants could have hoped for. He didn’t put up gaudy sack numbers — that’s simply not his game. Where ex-Giant Osi Umenyiora generally only impacted games by getting to quarterbacks, Vernon does it in a variety of ways. He is an impact pass rusher, even if he doesn’t get home as often as might be ideal. He is an excellent run defender, adept at coming down the line of scrimmage to make plays. He rarely comes off the field. He’s a leader on the practice field and a quiet, unassuming player in the locker room who does not seek attention.

2017 Season Outlook

The 6-foot-2, 275-pound Vernon is still only 26 years old. When the Giants signed him, GM Jerry Reese said he thought Vernon’s best football was still ahead of him:

“Vernon is a young pass rusher with all the tools,” Reese said at the time. “We believe he’s right at the beginning of him prime.”

As well as Vernon played in 2016, it looks like Reese was right about that.

Can Vernon be even better in 2017? There are several reasons to think he can.

He played much of the 2016 season with a damaged hand. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo admitted during the season that the hand was an issue, and Vernon spent several games at left defensive end — where he had never been before — to cover for the injury.

Jason Pierre-Paul. JPP played 12 games last season and Vernon was better with him than without him. Of Vernon’s 8.5 sacks, only one came after Pierre-Paul went down with a season-ending injury. JPP’s presence makes it harder for teams to roll extra blockers at Vernon.

Added depth, hopefully. If Romeo Okwara continues to ascend, and Devin Taylor and Avery Moss can contribute, Vernon should be able to get a bit more rest. That should, theoretically, help him be better on the snaps he does play.

All in all, no reason to expect anything less than another excellent season from Vernon.

Shane Vereen | Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

Running back’s pass-catching was sorely missed in 2016

When we talk about potential improvement to the New York Giants’ offense, the focus is on the additions of Brandon Marshall and Evan Engram as well potential improvement from second-year man Sterling Shepard. An underrated improvement, though, could be the return to health of running back Shane Vereen.

Let’s look at what impact Vereen could have as we near the end of our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

Vereen played in only five games, twice suffering a torn triceps. He was first placed on IR and brought back, then placed on season-ending IR following the second injury. He carried 33 times for 158 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and caught 11 passes for 94 yards. It was, for all intents and purposes, a lost season for Vereen.

2017 Season Outlook

If Vereen, 28, can be somewhere near the player he was for the Giants in 2015 he could be a huge factor. Here is what Vereen did in 2015:

Vereen set career highs in receptions (59), targets (81), yards receiving (495), receiving touchdowns (4) and catch percentage (72.8 percent). He ran 61 times for 260 yards (4.3 yards per carry). He also filled in at times for Dwayne Harris as the kickoff returner, bringing back 14 kickoffs for 321 yards (22.9 yards per return). His 1,076 all-purpose yards was a career high.

The 59 receptions placed him second on the Giants behind Odell Beckham Jr., who had 96 catches in his 15 games played. Thirty-nine percent (23) of Vereen's 59 receptions created first downs.

Pay particular attention to those first downs created. Running backs other than Vereen caught 72 passes for the Giants last season, 21 for first downs. That’s 29.2 percent, a big drop from what Vereen provided them in 2015. That’s a lot of stalled drives Vereen could perhaps have kept alive.

Vereen, 5-foot-10, 205 pounds, is not an every down back. The most carries he has ever had in a season is 96, with the New England Patriots in 2014. He is a guy who can be effective when asked to carry the ball on a limited basis, averaging 4.3 yards per carry throughout his career.

His ability to create first downs and be a red zone mismatch, though, are the things the Giants benefit most from in 2017.

Could last season’s starting tight end be odd man out?

Tight end Will Tye was third on the New York Giants in receptions last season with 48. Yet, as we enter the 2017 NFL season, the 25-year-old finds not only his starting job, but perhaps even his roster spot, under assault.

Let’s take a closer look at the 6-foot-2, 262-pound Tye as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

In his first truly full NFL season, the former Stony Brook star caught 48 passes. His impact, though, clearly wasn’t what the Giants were hoping for after a promising rookie season.

Tye’s yards per catch dropped from 11.0 in 2015 to 8.2 last season. His yards receiving per game dropped from 35.7 to 24.7. He caught only one touchdown pass, not nearly enough from a team’s primary pass-catching tight end.

Football Outsiders ranked Tye 41st among 46 tight ends who had at least 25 passes thrown to them in 2016 using a stat called DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average). Per that measure, Tye was 22.3 percentage points below league average in production on balls thrown to him. FO also used a stat called DYAR (Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement) that had Tye 40th. That stat had him 68 yards below replacement level on his 48 receptions.

Tye’s blocking was also insufficient. Pro Football Focus listed Tye 61st out of 63 qualifying tight ends in run-blocking, with a score of 33.7.

The Giants made it obvious with their offseason acquisitions of free-agent Rhett Ellison and first-round pick Evan Engram that getting better tight end production was a priority.

Per NFL Savant, only 3.49 percent of the Giants’ passing plays (22) went to the deep middle of the field last season. Only seven turned into completions. That’s an area where teams usually look to their tight ends.

“The fastest way to the end zone is down the middle of the field,” coach Ben McAdoo said after the Giants drafted the 6-foot-3 Engram, who has 4.42 speed and 33.5-inch arms, putting him in the 63rd percentile amongst tight ends. “Anytime you can add someone to your offense that can run down the middle of the field with that type of speed and length, it stresses the defense.”

Inadequate blocking from the tight end spot was also part of the reason the Giants’ running game often sputtered last season. Ellison, who PFF says has been used as a blocker on 73.5 percent of his career snaps, is a Giant for that reason.

The presence of those two likely means a decrease in playing time for Tye, who was on the field for 681 snaps (64.12 percent) last season. The development of second-year man Jerell Adams, who does have practice squad eligibility, and the health of Matt LaCosse, once again impressive in the spring, could leave Tye fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster.
