Does OBJ have a point?

The New York Giants came up small in Pittsburgh Sunday but depending on who tells the story, the referees certainly didn’t help their cause. That was Odell Beckham Jr.’s narrative after Big Blue’s 24-14 loss to the Steelers and most fans would agree.

The idea that defenders would need extra help covering OBJ isn’t exactly breaking new ground, but the Steelers seemed to take a few liberties against him without being penalized. Beckham unleashed on Terry McAulay and the Week 13 officiating crew after the game.

"I don’t really think we should have this crew anymore with the past history and everything that’s gone on," Beckham said in remarks reported by a variety of media sources.

The history he’s referring to is his much publicized matchup with Josh Norman last season. McAulay and company officiated that game between the Giants and Carolina Panthers as well.

Beckham caught 10 passes for 100 yards on a day where Eli Manning targeted him more than usual, but only drew one flag. And that came during what was essentially garbage-time. He appeared to be held or disrupted at least a handful of times during Sunday’s game. OBJ wanted to make it clear, however, that he wasn’t blaming the refs for the Giants’ letdown against the Steelers.

The officials missed at least one more egregious hold early in the game. A series after calling Ereck Flowers for a hold in the end zone that resulted in a safety, Olivier Vernon was held by Steelers tackle Alejandro Villanueva as he closed in on Ben Roethlisberger. No flag was thrown and Pittsburgh cashed in with a 37-yard reception by tight end Ladarius Green. They ended that drive with a Randy Bullock field goal to take a 5-0 lead.

There did appear to be a tense moment between Beckham and McAulay early in the game, when OBJ went over to argue for a flag and McAulay pointed a finger in his face during their conversation. While we can’t speculate on what was said exactly, it didn’t look like they were arranging a Christmas grab-bag. Beckham has done a much better job controlling his emotions in recent weeks but his reputation, fairly or not, certainly precedes him.

Regardless, the Giants lost this game because they didn’t make plays. A few calls could’ve helped but the officials had nothing to do with a Manning red-zone interception or three failed fourth-down conversions.

Is there still time for the Giants to get this offense straightened out?

What did we learn during the New York Giants’ 24-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday? Mostly that the offense, maddeningly under-whelming for most of the season, simply isn’t good enough to get the Giants deep into the playoffs, or maybe into the playoffs, as currently constructed.

The defense wasn’t perfect, but it did everything it could to keep the Giants in the game. The offense simply couldn’t hold up its end of the bargain.

Despite entering the game 8-3, the Giants’ offense had been plagued by penalties, inconsistent offensive line play and missed opportunities, all combining to both keep the Giants from possessing the ball for any considerable amount of time or put many points on the board. All of these things were present Sunday.

An Ereck Flowers holding penalty in the end zone cost the Giants two points. A John Jerry holding penalty negated a 21-yard pass to Sterling Shepard that would have given the Giants a first-and-goal at the 10-yard line.

A Manning interception at the goal line on a telegraphed play call to tight end Larry Donnell, his first snap on offense in several weeks, killed a scoring drive. By the way, did anyone really think the Steelers weren’t going to be able to figure out the ball was going to Donnell when he showed up on the field for the first time in about a month? The Giants missed a third quarter opportunity when Will Tye couldn’t hold a pass on fourth-and-1 from the Pittsburgh 3-yard line.

Four times in the second half the Giants took possession of the ball between their own 40-yard line and midfield. The only points they got came on a 1-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard in the waning seconds, and even that score was aided by 22 yards in Pittsburgh penalties.

With the exception of a few plays, when the Giants weren’t throwing the ball to Odell Beckham they weren’t getting anything accomplished. That is too reminiscent of the past couple of seasons.

That’s a typical Manning response, and it’s not inaccurate. It’s just growing old because we have heard it too often this season, whether or not the Giants have been winning.

The Giants are still in a good playoff position, the fifth seed at 8-4 with the Washington Redskins (6-5-1), Minnesota Vikings (6-6) and Green Bay Packers (6-6) trying to catch the Giants and 7-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers for wild-card spots.

The disconcerting thing, though, is that the Giants can’t beat good teams with their offense playing the way it did Sunday. And Sunday’s performance was not an isolated instance. It was simply more of what we have seen all season. There are always mistakes. There always seem to be missed opportunities. There always seems to be someone left out of the offense — this week it was Victor Cruz. There is always something that leaves you scratching your head — this week the inexplicable and ultimately decision to put the forgotten Donnell into the game and design a play for him.

For the past few weeks the Giants have been managing to win games despite their offensive ills. Sunday’s game, though, showed that they have to find a way to fix what ails their offense if they are going to be a factor in the playoffs. Or even win enough games down the stretch to get there.

The worrisome thing is, after 12 games can we really expect a dramatic turnaround?

There were only a couple winners and a whole lot of losers Sunday evening

There is such a thing as a good loss. The kind of game where you can see the team coming together and narrowly loses while punching out of its weight class. Those are the kinds of games that can give a team the motivation to push through to the playoffs.

The New York Giants’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers wasn’t one of those games. This was the kind of game that tests a team’s resolve to bounce back, to fight through adversity, and puts their faults on tape highlighted in neon.

This was a game with damn few winners, and a whole bunch of losers.

Winner - Olivier Vernon

If the Giants had one winner it would be Olivier Vernon. Playing with a brace on his wrist he finished the game with two tackles and a pair of sacks, but he had an impact beyond the box score.

Vernon was a menace on the outside, and probably could have drawn at least a handful of holding penalties all by himself if the refs had been so inclined. He was also typically stout in the run game, either helping to keep holes from opening most of the game or forcing plays to go back to other tacklers.

Jason Pierre-Paul going down to a groin injury late in the first half put even more pressure on Vernon. The free agent defensive end, however, stepped up and did more than his fair share to help keep the Giants in a game the offense didn’t seem to want to be in.

Many might have raised an eyebrow at Vernon’s contract, but so far he has proven to be worth every penny.

Loser - The New York Giants

I’m going to cast a wide net here, because I’m only “supposed” to do a single winner and loser.

Collectively the Giants are losers tonight, and in ways that could stay with them.

First off, the offense was bad. It was terrible. As usual they flashed hints of what they could be capable of if they ever managed to play up to their potential, but that was it. There was a nice fake hand-off , to fake reverse, to screen pass to Rashad Jennings for the touchdown. A great run from Paul Perkins and a “WOW” throw from Eli Manning to Sterling Shepard to pick up a third down. A torrid garbage time touchdown to Shepard.

But just flashes. The rest of the time the offense was the same as we’ve become accustomed. Slipshod, mired in bad execution, drive-killing penalties, and predictable play-calling — a special shout-out to the decision to trot Larry Donnell out, who hasn’t played in weeks, in the red zone.

But we’ve gotten used to seeing bad play from a talented offense.

What makes this loss hurt badly is two-fold.

More immediately is Jason Pierre-Paul’s groin injury. JPP’s come-back season has been a monster one so far. He’s done it all for the Giants’ defense — play an almost insane number of snaps, tackles, tackles for a loss, sacks, batted passes aplenty, and even a defensive touchdown, all while dominating in the run game.

And that last is the one that might hurt the most. Next weekend the Giants play the Dallas Cowboys and the best run-blocking offensive line in the NFL. Without JPP on the front line, the Giants’ defense is weaker. Not just in their ability to pressure the quarterback but in the running game. The Giants need JPP’s length, power, discipline, and talent up front against that dominant Dallas line. The Giants had their work cut out for them next week before JPP went down, and if he’s out next week, the game gets that much harder.

Taking a bit longer view is the Giants’ playoff chances. They escaped this week without losing their place in the post-season hunt thanks to a gutsy call by the Arizona Cardinals that led to a Washington Redskins loss. But if this loss turns into a skid, they could find themselves on the outside looking in as the Packers, Vikings, and Buccaneers are all seeming to heat up.

Six-game win streak ends with one-sided loss

Seven proved to be an unlucky number for the New York Giants on Sunday. After six straight victories the Giants (8-4) were beaten by the Pittsburgh Steelers, 24-14.

The Giants lost mostly because their offense, underwhelming most of the season, simply wasn’t very good.

The Giants’ only touchdown came after Eli Apple recovered a Le’Veon Bell fumble at the Pittsburgh 17-yard line, giving the Giants a short field to work with.

The Giants went 0-for-3 on fourth-down conversion attempts, including a fourth-and-1 at the Steelers’ 2-yard line.

Eli to Odell ... and that’s it

The Giants’ offense became Eli Manning to Odell Beckham, and pretty much nothing else. Beckham caught 10 passes in 16 targets for 105 yards.

Nobody else did much

Paul Perkins had a couple of nice runs and finished with 38 yards on 7 carries (5.4 yards per carry), and Rashad Jennings went 13 yards for a touchdown on a screen pass. That was it.

Manning, under duress thanks to a leaky offensive line, completed 24-of-39 for 195 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was sacked twice and consistently forced to simply dump the ball off.

Victor Cruz was never targeted.

In the second half, four New York possessions began between their own 40-yard line and midfield. The Giants’ only score on those was a meaningless 1-yard touchdown pass from Manning to Sterling Shepard in the closing seconds.

The Giants finished with just 234 yards of total offense. They possessed the ball for only 25:52.

Don’t blame the defense

Le’Veon Bell ran 29 times for 118 yards, Ben Roethlisberger completed 24-of-36 passes for 289 yards and two scores, and tight end LaDarius Green caught six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. It is impossible to pin this loss on the defense, though. The defense forced two turnovers, an interception and a fumble recovery both by Eli Apple, and gave the Giants a chance. The offense, however, could not take advantage.

The Giants trailed 14-0 at halftime on the unusual combination of a safety, two Randy Bullock field goals and a Pittsburgh touchdown that was followed by a failed two-point conversion attempt.

Bullock, who kicked in Week 1 for the Giants, went 3-for-3 in field goals for Pittsburgh.

The Giants did get within seven in the second half, but could get no closer than that.

Moments That Mattered

Poor offensive line play: The Steelers got a safety for a 2-0 first-quarter lead when Ereck Flowers was called for holding in the end zone. There was lots of consternation about a pass interference call against Odell Beckham Jr. that pushed the Giants back inside the 5-yard line. To me, that looked like the proper call as Beckham appeared to push cornerback Ross Cockrell. It was surprising, though, because it’s something Beckham usually gets away with.

The offensive line play was poor throughout. Manning was sacked twice and was constantly dumping the ball off to avoid pressure. A John Jerry holding penalty wiped out a second-quarter completion to Sterling Shepard that would have given the Giants a first-and-goal at the Pittsburgh 10-yard line.

Red-zone INT: Of course something bad would happen when the Giants put Larry Donnell in the game. With second-and four at the Steelers’ 9-yard line the Giants inserted Donnell, who hadn’t played in weeks, lined him up in the slot and tried to throw to him. Of course, Pittsburgh linebacker Lawrence Timmons came up with a leaping interception at the goal line. A 58-yard return led to a 22-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown. Thus, what could have been a 7-5 Giants’ lead turned into an 11-0 second-quarter deficit.

Fourth-down flop: Trailing 14-0 and badly needing a touchdown, the Giants went for it on 4th-and-1 from the Pittsburgh 2-yard line with 8:58 left in the third quarter. Will Tye couldn’t hold onto a Manning pass at the goal line, and Pittsburgh took over. The Giants ended up 0-for-3 on fourth-down attempts, but the other two were long desperation ones in the fourth quarter.

Thank you, Le’Veon: After the Giants’ fourth-down failure, Steelers’ running back Le’Veon Bell fumbled when hit by Damon Harrison and Jonathan Casillas. Eli Apple recovered at the Pittsburgh 17-yard line, and two plays later the Giants got on the board with a 13-yard screen pass to Rashad Jennings. That pulled the Giants within 14-7 with 6:37 left in the third quarter.

Two more for OV: Olivier Vernon had two sacks, making it five straight games in which he has had at least one. Vernon now has eight sacks on the season.

Injuries pile up: Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who had 5.5 sacks in the two previous games, left in the second quarter with a groin injury. Johnathan Hankins also left with a thigh injury, but returned in the second half. (Full story)

What’s Next?

The Giants host the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys in a Sunday Night Football show down. The Giants, of course, handed the 11-1 Cowboys their only loss of the season with a 20-19 Week 1 victory. With the Giants’ loss Sunday, and Dallas clinching a playoff berth due to the Washington Redskins’ 31-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, that game has lost some of its meaning.

The FOX broadcast crew announced at the beginning of the third quarter than Pierre-Paul is out for the remainder of the game.

Defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins also left the game with a right thigh bruise. The play happened early in the first quarter when Hankins fell awkwardly on his leg after making a tackle. He’s gone back to the Giants’ locker room and his return is questionable.

JPP and Hankins have been a major contributors for a Giants’ defensive line that has come on in recent weeks. Anchored by Hankins and Damon “Snacks” Harrison in the middle, the Giants’ run defense is fourth in the NFL having allowed 980 yards to opponents on 3.5 yards per carry. JPP and Olivier Vernon have combined for 13 sacks and four forced fumbles.

Cornerback Coty Sensabaugh also left during the second-quarter with a rib injury. He came back on the field before returning to the locker-room shortly before halftime. His return is questionable.

Second half open thread

Every demon that has plagued the New York Giants‘ offense through their first 11 game reared its ugly head in the first half of this game.

Penalties, miscomunications, poor execution, and predictable play calling were a whole collection of millstones around the Giants’ neck.

A questionable holding call on Ereck Flowers in the end zone turned what would have been an Odell Beckham first down into a safety. An Eli Manning interception when 11 year veteran linebacker Lawerence Timmons made the fairly obvious decision to jump Larry Donnell’s route when the Giants brought him on in the red zone. That play lead to an Antonio Brown touchdown, though Pittsburgh failed on the two point conversion.

Overall the Giants’ defense held up well, though how well they will continue to play is in question with injuries to Johnathan Hankins and Jason Pierre-Paul. The Steelers have relied heavily on screen passes to slow down the Giants pass rush as their has been solid down the field.

All told the Giants are only down by 14 points when they get the ball to start the second half. Will they be able to button their play down and make a game of it?
