The Giants add a free safety to their young, unproven group competing for playing time next to Landon Collins.

The New York Giants completed their work on Day of the 2016 NFL Draft by selecting Boise State safety Darian Thompson with the eighth pick of the third round, 71st overall. Earlier in the night, the Giants used their second-round pick (40th overall) to select Oklahoma wide receiver Sterling Shepard. [Reaction | Analysis]

Thompson was ranked No. 71 on our Consensus Big Board.

Thompson, 6-foot-1 3/4, 208 pounds, had 19 interceptions during his four-year career at Boise. Here is the summary of Thompson's skills from CBS Sports analysts Dane Brugler in his 2016 NFL Draft Guide.

"A four-year starter, Thompson forced his way onto the field as a freshman and leaves Boise as one of the most accomplished defenders in school history - was asked to do a little bit of everything on tape, attacking the run and playing deep coverage. Although his missed tackles are frustrating, he screams to the football as a run defender with a physical mentality to take out ballcarriers. Thompson has the anticipation and ballskills to read quarterbacks and make plays on the ball, but he also guesses too much and lacks the same cover skills once asked to turn and run. His inconsistencies make it tough to trust him as the last line of defense, but his play-making instincts and toughness will interest NFL coaches as a downhill safety."

Giants GM Jerry Reese said the organization sees Thompson as a free safety.

"Big kid, center fielder, checks a lot of boxes for us. We really like how he makes plays on the football. We think he's a solid tackler back there. Makes the calls. Captain. High test score. A lot of things to like about him," Reese said. "we think he's a free safety. He makes the calls back there for his team, he's a ball hawk back there. We think he's going to create a lot of competition in the secondary at that safety position."

Giants VP of Player Evaluation Marc Ross said the Giants like the versatility Thompson adds to their safety group.

"We have a nice mix of guys who all have something different. Nat's a box guy and real competitive. Mykkele's a free range guy. This guy's a free safety who can also play strong. He plays that way there. He has good ball skills, feel for the game, competitiveness and size. So they all give you something different," Ross said. "This guy's a ball hawk. His instincts are what separates. He can anticipate where a route is, where a ball is going and he jumps on it. And that's what distinguishes him with making interceptions."

Head coach Ben McAdoo sounded like he was looking forward to the competition at safety.

"We have a lot of young guys in the safety mix and, quite frankly, we haven't seen them," coach Ben McAdoo said. "They have been nicked up. They basically had a medical redshirt type year last year, and it is good to get them back out there. They are working to get back out and get back out 100 percent, so we are chomping at the bit to look at those guys. Darian is a guy we are going to throw into the mix and let them all compete."

In its draft guide, Pro Football Focus compares Thompson to Morgan Burnett of the Green Bay Packers.

The league is not full of players that can perform well in coverage and still offer something in the run game. Thompson flashes the ability to do both, and has graded well in each area, but just can't put it all together in a way that avoids mistakes in each facet. If he can fix those issues and the big plays they result in, he could be an excellent safety, but even with them there is a place for him in the NFL given his plus points.

Sports Illustrated immediately gave the selection an "A" grade.

Thompson's sluggish 40 time at the combine probably knocked him down boards, but he is an absolute ballhawk in the passing game. Pairing him with Landon Collins gives the Giants a heck of a 1-2 combo, and Collins can help cover up some of Thompson's recognition shortcomings.

The Giants have added to their pass defense and passing offense with their first two picks. They break the tie with their third pick.

So far the New York Giants have added a pair of athletic and hard working players in Eli Apple and Sterling Shepard -- though the latter has been much better received by fans than the former.

In the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Giants added safety Darian Thompsonout of Boise State

Thompson signifies a concerted effort to shore up the Giants' pass defense. So far the Giants have retained Jason Pierre-Paul and added Olivier Vernon to harass quarterbacks while adding Janoris Jenkins, Eli Apple, and Darian Thompson to keep the ball in quarterbacks' hands.

Thompson brings good size at 6-foot-2, 208 pounds, outstanding coverage in zone schemes, and the ability to roam the middle of the field. He also has impressive instincts and ball skills, coming away with 19 interceptions in his four years at Boise State -- 11 in his last two years.

Thompson had a disappointing combine workout, later attributed to a stomach virus that hit many prospects and NFL representatives that week, but he made up for it with an improved performance at his pro day.

He also has an aggressive attitude, which gets him into trouble at times, particularly when he fails to make a technically sound tackle, but it also helps him come away with interceptions.

If the Giants' pass rush can get pressure on opposing passers, having ballhawks like Jenkins, DRC, and Thompson in the defensive secondary could feast on errant passes.

The Giants' second-round selection is in, and the Giants have added a versatile wide receiver.

The New York Giants selected wide receiver Sterling Shepard on Friday night with the ninth pick of the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, 40th overall. GM Jerry Reese referred to him as "a young Victor Cruz."

Shepard, 5-foot-10. 194 pounds, caught 86 passes for 1,288 yards last season for the Sooners. Shepard told Giants.com he was "landing in a perfect spot."

Giants General Manager Jerry Reese said the selection of Shepard "was an easy pick for us."

"We think he's going to come in and he's NFL-ready -- ready to play right now," Reese said.

Reese referred to Shepard as "a young Victor Cruz," but also aid he isn't concerned about having three receivers in Shepard, Cruz and Odell Beckham Jr. who are not tall players.

"The one thing about this kid is he's 5-10 and some change, but his strike zone — what we call a strike zone — is bigger than that. He's got a 41-inch vertical jump, he's got big hands...he's a tenacious slot receiver, run after the catch. Get the ball to him quick and he does some nice things after that catch as well," Reese said. "You'd like to have all of them 6'5 that run 4.4 and all that, but it's just not the way it is all the time. ... We think he's plenty tall enough, and we think he's a terrific young receiver."

Head coach Ben McAdoo said there are "similarities" between Shepard and Cruz.

"There are some similarities between he and Victor [Cruz]. There are some similarities that I have seen with some of the guys I have coached in the past in Green Bay," McAdoo said. "He is a high character guy and when you take a look, there may be a little Randall Cobb in him, you see that. He will reach back and pluck the ball the way James Jones did a little bit in Green Bay in the past, so he has that in him; strong, confident hands as far as being a hands catcher but there are some guys out there that he reminds you of."

McAdoo said he anticipates being able to use Shepard, Cruz and Odell Beckham together and move them around in different alignments.

"You look at Odell, he can play inside and outside and Victor can play inside and outside, as well, and Sterling is no different that way," McAdoo said. "He has been productive in the past on the outside, this year he played more on the inside but they need to be flexible that way and they are definitely bright enough to do that and he certainly fits that role for us."

Giants VP of Player Evaluation Marc Ross said of the selection "We're excited. We were waiting for this guy today."

Ross echoed Reese's sentiments in regards to Shepard's height.

"You like 6-5, 200 pounds and run a 4.4 and all that, but this guy overcomes his lack of height with his other skills. He's got a 41-inch vertical. He's competitive to the ball. His catch radius is bigger - he plays bigger than his actual size. His catch radius is where he can go up and get the ball," Ross said. "So short receivers who play small are our concern. Short receivers who play big are not a concern."

Shepard said he disagrees with the notion that his height limits him to being a slot receiver.

"I play so big. A lot of people think that's all I can do is play inside because of my size, but guys like Odell and Victor have proven that that's not the case," Shepard said. "I'm definitely one of those guys that can be bounced around."

Other reactions

Brandon Thorn (@VeteranScout) put his stamp of approval on the pick Friday night.

"He's the best route runner in the class and can play all 3 positions. Ideal slot WR who can get open underneath and become a security blanket for Eli," Thorn said. "Love his competitive toughness as well. He's tough and fearless."

Here is what Dane Brugler of CBS Sports had to say about Shepard in his 2016 Draft Guide:

Shepard has electric feet and looks like an artist with the ball in his hands, creating something impressive. His lack of size and strength will limit him in some areas, but he has above average body control and route savvy, using tempo and multiple gears to get open. Despite his limitations, Shepard is a very natural pass-catcher with the skills to be a YAC monster – can play inside or outside in the NFL, but ideally suited for the slot..

In its draft guide, Pro Football Focus said of Shepard that "His ability on deep passes mean Sterling Shepard isn't limited to purely being a slot player, but he ran 71.1% of his routes from the slot in 2015, racking up 1,015 yards and scoring six touchdowns."

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock endorsed the selection:

The Giants add Sterling Shepard with their second pick of the 2016 draft

The New York Giants raised eyebrows -- to say the least -- with their selection of Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple with the 10th overall pick of the draft.

With the 40th pick, and their first pick of the second day of the draft, the Giants selected Sterling Shepard, wide receiver out of Oklahoma.

While Shepard isn't the big receiver Giants fans have wanted since before Odell Beckham was drafted in 2014, much like Beckham and the Pittsburgh Steelers Antonio Brown, he plays big.

Shepard should be an immediate contributor, with quickness, body control, sticky hands and advanced route running he is a perfect fit for Ben McAdoo's offense. Despite his pedestrian size, Shepard is explosively powerful with a 41-inch vertical leap and put up an impressive 20 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press at a body weight of 194 pounds. -- for reference, Jason Pierre-Paul put up 19 reps at 270 pounds.

Shepard doesn't have great long speed, only running a 4.48 second 40-yard dash, but he is very quick in and out of his breaks, creating separation with his route running. And despite his stature he has the ability to play wide receiver, in the slot, or out of the backfield, fitting well in McAdoo's tendency to move players all over the offensive formation.

Finally, Shepard is the son of an NFL player, high character, a strong work ethic, and toughness to the offense.

Here is what you need to know about Day 2 of the 2016 NFL Draft. The start time, how to watch, the pick-by-pick selection, and when the New York Giants will be on the clock. Use this as your Friday evening open thread.

Bad Jerry Reese! Bad, bad, bad! That, apparently, is the opinion of the majority of New York Giants fans when it comes to the general manager's selection on Thursday night of cornerback Eli Apple with the 10th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. In our poll asking what grade BBV readers gave the selection, 29 percent (1,451) of 5,557 voters gave the pick an "F." Twenty percent (1,098 voters) gave the selection a "D," and only 5 percent (275 lonely voices in the wilderness) gave the pick an "A."

Well, Giants fans, you get another chance to pass judgment on the evaluation skills of Reese and the Giants' organization Friday night when the draft continues with Rounds 2 and 3. The Giants have the ninth pick of Round 2 (40th) overall, and the eighth pick of Round 3 (71st overall).

The complete TV schedule and pick-by-pick order for Rounds 2 and 3 can be found below.

Vote in our poll and let us know if you think the Giants should select him.

For those of you who are still banging the drum for the New York Giants to select UCLA linebacker Myles Jack on Friday night if he remains on the board with the 40th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, a public service announcement.

This shouldn't, at least the way I read it, be taken to mean that Jack will NEVER need the microfracture surgery. Jack himself acknowledged this week that might eventually be the case. It simply means he doesn't need it now.

Jack also posted this video this afternoon.

That is a dunk, and it's nice to see. It is, however, a very careful dunk with a very careful two-footed landing that puts minimum stress on Jack's legs.

Your thoughts Giants fans? Should the Giants take Jack if he is on the board at 40?

With the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft in the books, Chris and Alex look at how the second day of the draft could play out.

After months of speculation, the New York Giants went in a direction on Thursday night that nobody saw coming with their first round pick.

To be fair, the first nine picks fell in what had to be something of a "nightmare scenario" for the Giants. Their most likely targets -- Leonard Floyd, Jack Conklin, and Ezekiel Elliott -- were drafted more highly than anticipated. At the same time, the players that fell had significant red flags -- Laremy Tunsil's video of drug use and Myles Jack's "time bomb" knee.

Given the circumstances, the pick of Apple shouldn't really surprise. He has traits in common with many of the Giants' first-round choices, namely youth, high character, high work ethic, physicality, and elite measurables.

Now that the first round is done and over with, it's time to move on -- for now -- and take a look at the second day of the draft. Alex Sinclair spent time earlier Friday morning taking a look at the Giants' needs and some players who could fill those needs.

For now we are left wondering how the second day of the draft will play out, and what better way to look at that than with a two round mock draft where each of us take a full round for Day 2 and break down who we select for the Giants with each of their picks.

Round 2 - Chris Pflum

32. Cleveland Browns - Mackensie Alexander (CB, Clemson)

33. Tennessee Titans - Vonn Bell (S, Ohio State)

34. Dallas Cowboys - Emmanuel Ogbah (DE, Oklahoma state)

35. San Diego Chargers - Jason Spriggs (OT, Indiana)

36. Baltimore Ravens - Kevin Dodd (DE/OLB, Clemson)

37. Kansas City Chiefs - A'Shawn Robinson (DT, Alabama)

38. Jacksonville Jaguars - Cody Whitehair (OL, Kansas State)

39. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Myles Jack (OLB, UCLA)

40. New York Giants - Sterling Shepard (WR, Oklahoma)

The first round of the draft fell about as awkwardly for the Giants as could be reasonably expected, and I saw no reason for the second round to be any different. At this point I was down to four options: Justin Simmons, Noah Spence, Michael Thomas, and Sterling Shepard.

Simmons was my "gut pick" because he continues to rebuild the defense, offers the size, athleticism, and versatility the Giants like and was a leader on a terrific defense. He's the kind of steady, high upside second round pick they've made in the past.

Finally, my heart wanted to go with Noah Spence. I've made no secret of the fact that I believe that he could be a player in the mold of Khalil Mack. The Giants desperately need a speed rusher off the edge, and with his first step and ability to bend the edge, Spence is arguably the best one in the class. He can play from a two or three point stance, and along with Devon Kennard, could give Giants the same kind of 5-man rush the Denver Bronco's enjoyed in their Super Bowl run.

Finally, my brain suggested Michael Thomas (WR, Ohio State) or Sterling Shepard. I opted for Shepard because of his superior route running will let him contribute early while his 41-inch vertical leap, upper-body strength, sticky hands, and body control let him play bigger then listed.

(Note: Michael Thomas was Alex's pick here for the Giants)

41. Chicago Bears - Hunter Henry (TE, Arkansas)

42. Miami Dolphins - Jalen Mills (CB/FS, LSU)

43. Tennessee Titans - Michael Thomas (WR, Ohio State)

44. Oakland Raiders - Reggie Ragland (ILB, Alabama)

45. Tennessee Titans - Jonathan Bullard (DE, Florida)

46. Detroit Lions - Andrew Billings (DT, Baylor)

47. New Orleans Saints - Tyler Boyd (WR, Pittsburgh)

48. Indianapolis Colts - Justin Simmons (S, Boston College)

49. Buffalo Bills - Jerald Hawkins (OT, LSU)

50. Atlanta Falcons - Noah Spence (OLB, Eastern Kentucky)

51. New York Jets - La'Raven Clark (OT, Texas Tech)

52. Houston Texans - Vadal Alexander (OL, LSU)

53. Washington Redskins - Nick Martin (C, Notre Dame)

54. Minnesota Vikings - Kyle Murphy (OT, Stanford)

55. Cincinnati Bengals - Braxton Miller (WR, Ohio State)

56. Seattle Seahawks - Chris Jones (DT, Mississippi State)

58. Pittsburgh Steelers - Joshua Perry (LB, Ohio State)

59. Kansas City Chiefs - Dak Prescott (QB, Mississippi State)

60. New England Patriots - Sheldon Day (DL, Notre Dame)

61. New England Patriots - Sean Davis (CB/S, Maryland)

62. Carolina Panthers - T.J. Green (S, Clemson)

63. Denver Broncos - Christian Westerman (OG, Arizona State)

Round 3 - Alex Sinclair

64. Tennessee Titans - Su'a Cravens (LB/SS, USC)

65. Cleveland Browns - Shilique Calhoun (EDGE, MSU)

66. San Diego Chargers - Shon Coleman (G, Auburn)

67. Dallas Cowboys - Christian Hackenberg (QB, Penn State)

68. San Francisco 49ers - Thomas Duarte (TE, UCLA)

69. Jacksonville Jaguars - Deion Jones (LB, LSU)

70. Baltimore Ravens - Pharoh Cooper (WR, South Carolina)

71. New York Giants - Kevin Byard (FS, Middle Tennessee State)

Who? Yes, I understand that many will consider this a reach for a small school player, but the Giants absolutely cannot head into Day 3 of the draft without addressing their free safeties. It wasn't a realistic option with the 10th overall pick, and it didn't fall right for Round 2, so here we are almost forced into it here.

If you think about it this way, even if Byard doesn't work out for the Giants (though I think he would), at least the front-office made a move to acknowledge their weakness. The things that get general managers fired isn't when guys don't work out, it's when you're oblivious to the problem at all. Head into a season without an offensive line or a quarterback, and you'll be dead by October.

For the Giants, their main weakness right now is safety, and Byard is an answer to that. It's a bit of a riskier pick than Darian Thompson who is still on the board at this point, but considering the likelihood of starting a rookie at safety on opening day, I prefer Byard as the guy to pair with Landon Collins. His skills appear to be better suited to that of a single-high zone, which would allow Collins to play closer to the box.

Other options included adding a Penn State lineman such as Austin Johnson or Carl Nassib, and Chris was very clear that he would want Nassib at this point, but the fear of waiting another round before I could get a safety was too great. Had to be here, and it had to be Byard.

72. Chicago Bears - Landon Turner (G, North Carolina)

73. Miami Dolphins - Austin Johnson (DT, Penn State)

74. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Carl Nassib (DE, Penn State)

75. Oakland Raiders - Daniel Braverman (WR, Western Michigan)

76. Cleveland Browns - Bronson Kaufusi (EDGE, BYU)

77. Cleveland Browns - Darian Thompson (FS, Boise State)

78. New Orleans Saints - Cyrus Jones (CB, Alabama)

79. Philadelphia Eagles - Derrick Henry (RB, Alabama)

80. Buffalo Bills - Rashard Higgins (WR, Colorado State)

81. Atlanta Falcons - Jarran Reed (DT, Alabama)

82. Indianapolis Colts - Joe Thuney (OT, NC State)

83. New York Jets - Vernon Adams (QB, Oregon)

84. Washington - Kendall Fuller (CB, Virginia Tech)

85. Houston Texans - Briean Boddy-Calhoun (CB, Minnesota)

86. Minnesota Vikings - Jack Allen (C, Michigan State)

87. Cincinnati Bengals - Charles Tapper (DE, Oklahoma)

The immediate reaction over the selection of Eli Apple by the Giants was anything but kind. But, did Jerry Reese actually do the right thing?

If you believe the oft-repeated narrative that the New York Giants primary targets in Round 1 of the 2016 NFL Draft were Georgia outside linebacker Leonard Floyd or Michigan State offensive tackle Jack Conklin, then through seven picks Thursday it looked the odds were in the Giants' favor that at least one of the two would still be on the board with the 10th overall pick.

Then, the Tennessee Titans struck, moving up from No. 15 to No. 8 in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Conklin gone. But, Floyd was still there and only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stood in the way of getting the player many thought they wanted all along.

Then, the Chicago Bears leap-frogged the Giants, moving from No. 11 to No. 9. Floyd gone.

Oh, crud. What common wisdom held to be the Giants' plan had just gone up in flames.

What on Earth would the Giants do now? If they didn't trade down, the pick had to be either free-falling offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil after his gas-mask bong video surfaced, or Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves. Right? That's what every media-compiled draft board in America said. Right? Maybe they would throw caution to the wind and draft LB Myles Jack. Right?

Well, wrong. GM Jerry Reese, head coach Ben McAdoo and the Giants decided to bring another Eli to the Big Apple, selecting Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple.

Wait, they did what? Fans hate the pick [see here | and here]. The immediate media narrative was that Reese got outmaneuvered, and then he reached.

Really? Look, I know there is always a rush to judgment. Everyone wants to put a grade on a pick, to decide if it was good or bad, as soon as the pick is made. I know no one expected this pick, not even Apple himself, and that he was ranked 26th on our Consensus Big Board.

None of that make it wrong.

Remember what the "Big Blue View Rules For Draft Success" say. Trade down, not up, unless you are making a move for a franchise-changing player -- almost always a quarterback.

Was it a bummer to watch teams move around and snag the players the Giants were expected to target right out from under them? Sure. Does that mean the Giants should have traded up? Absolutely not. They only have six picks, they need more than one player, Reese correctly assessed that they weren't in a position to surrender draft assets.

Given what happened in front of the Giants, did Reese select the wrong player? How does anyone know that? Apple is a 20-year-old kid with loads of talent and potential. He hasn't set foot on an NFL practice field, let alone played in a game. Who knows what kind of player he will be? I understand that meaningless draft boards didn't have Apple as a value pick at that spot, and that Reese's draft record and the Giants lack of wins over the past few seasons gives the GM no margin for error. Not to mention no good will from the fan base. How about, however, let's give the kid a chance to get on the field and perform before deciding that this was a move that -- judging by some of last night's vile comments -- should have Reese condemned to unspeakable fates.

Why didn't the Giants take Hargreaves, a player most media analysts ranked ahead of Apple? I am not privy to the Giants' draft board or their internal scouting reports, but personally I have never believed Hargreaves was a player who interested the Giants. Reese has a type -- he likes long, athletic players who check off the size/speed measurables and who have upside. Apple checks off those boxes. He's also a press-man corner. Hargreaves is a good player, but smaller and slower than ideal. Rightly or wrongly, he doesn't fit the Giants' profile.

Would I have been happy to see the Giants trade down in this scenario? Sure. I advocated that enough times in the run-up to the draft that it should be obvious I would have applauded a sensible trade down. Reese acknowledged the Giants had one offer to trade down, but said "we didn't like it." If the Giants had an offer to move down from a team picking inside the top 15, for me that would have been a no-brainer to accept. First-round trades after the Giants' pick, though, all came from teams drafting 21st or below. That would have been way too far to drop down. If that's where the Giants offer to move down came from, staying put was the right call. We don't know where it came from, and probably never will.

Certainly, this wasn't the scenario anyone expected for the Giants when the draft began. Reese and the Giants could end up with egg all over their faces. They could end up looking brilliant. Let's just calm down, take a deep breath, and let it play out. Besides, don't you need to save some of your anger for the next two days?
