Philadelphia, San Francisco jobs would have been wrong ones for Coughlin to take.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am glad that former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin has decided to bow out of consideration for the jobs as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. That saves the awkwardness of seeing Coughlin patrolling the sidelines in Eagles' colors, which is a good thing. It isn't, however, the biggest reason I'm happy Coughlin stepped away.

It's pretty apparent Coughlin still wants to coach. He still believes he can coach. I still believe Coughlin can coach although I'm not blind to the fact that he wasn't at his best in 2015. It may have been time for the Giants and the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach to part ways, but I still think that in the right situation Coughlin can succeed.

The Eagles did not provide the right situation. For that matter, neither did the San Francisco 49ers. Sam Bradford? Colin Kaepernick? The front offices of both franchises? The Swiss-cheese rosters? Please.

No matter whether you thought Coughlin's time with the Giants should have been up or not, you have to be appreciative of the championships and the good things he brought to the franchise. I don't think anyone should want to see Coughlin go someplace just to coach and wind up failing miserably. I think that is precisely what would have been likely to happen in either Philadelphia or San Francisco.

I can see Coughlin taking over a team with an entrenched championship-caliber quarterback, a veteran roster only a few tweaks away from winning, a solid, stable front office. Neither the Eagles nor the 49ers provide that.

Call me a TC apologist if you will. I respect the man and the career that he has had and would hate to see him wind up making a decision he would regret. If he coaches again one day, good for him. I just hope he chooses carefully.

Tom Coughlin has taken himself out of the running for the Eagles' vacant head coaching position.

The NFL is a business. It's something we all recognize, even if we don't particularly like it. So when Tom Coughlin became the apparent frontrunner to replace Chip Kelly as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, it was accepted but few Giants fans actually wanted to see it happen.

As it turns out, that queasy feeling can go away and be replaced by a sigh of relief. Coughlin has bowed out of the Eagles' coaching search, saying that the situation isn't a good fit.

Reportedly, the Eagles had planned on letting Coughlin right their ship, but having a young offensive or defensive coordinator on staff as the "Heir Apparent" for the 70 year old coach.

Giants' fans can take some small measure of satisfaction that the Giants' new head coach and his predecessor both snubbed the Eagles in their head coaching search.

Could this really happen?

The New York Giants have their new coach in Ben McAdoo.
Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reported that the Eagles and Coughlin spoke for a second time on Wednesday and were expected to do so again on Thursday.

Would Coughlin, after 12 years with the Giants and two Super Bowl victories, actually coach the NFC East rival Eagles? Well, really why not? Bill Parcells coached the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys after leaving the Giants. If Coughlin wants to work, and he apparently does, why wouldn't he go to Philly?

Would Coughlin be the right hire for Philly? Who knows? Who cares? It certainly would be weird to see Coughlin on the Eagles sideline. And it certainly would turn up the volume on the already intense Giants-Eagles rivalry.

Your thoughts, Giants fans?

Philly is apparently not going to interview any more candidates. So, who will get the job?

The Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly finished interviewing candidates for their head-coaching vacancy. Former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin and current Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, who is also a leading candidate for the Giants job, are among the five candidates for the job. Will either get it?

Eagles fans, at least those who voted in the poll at SB Nation's Bleeding Green Nation asking which coach the Eagles would hire, apparently don't think so. Coughlin received 31 percent (4,950) of the 15,932 votes cast. McAdoo received the least support, getting only 4 percent (681) of the votes.

Eagles fans apparently believe Doug Pederson will be the team's next coach. Pederson, the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, received 41 percent (6,508) of votes cast.

ESPN's Eagles beat writer Phil Sheridan believes the Eagles are most likely to hire Pederson. Sheridan lists McAdoo as the runner-up, with Coughlin as the third choice.

What would be harder to take, Philadelphia snatching McAdoo away from the Giants or seeing Coughlin in Eagles colors?

What should we make of San Francisco's sudden courtship of Tom Coughlin?

Monday the San Francisco 49ers requested permission to interview former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin for their vacant head coaching position.

The meeting will reportedly happen sometime on Tuesday.

Kicking up the interest factor is the news that 49ers' GM Trent Baalke traveled to the east coast to conduct the interview with Coughlin on his own turf.

Source: Coughlin interview to be conducted by #49ers GM Trent Baalke on the east coast. Team CEO Jed York is in Houston for owners meetings.

So what does this mean? Well, there are a couple possible explanations and the right answer could be "All Of The Above".

1) With NFL league meetings getting ready to commence in Houston, York and Baalke might want to get Coughlin's interview done before the distraction of the meetings sets in.

2) With the Giants showing interest in Hue Jackson -- who the 49ers have also shown strong interest in -- the apparent courting of Coughlin could be a move to try to gain some leverage on Jackson, or possibly get the Cleveland Browns to feel safer in their position and ease off their pursuit.

3) The 49ers really are that interested in Coughlin. Generally when a team changes coaches, they want something different in their next coach. Where Jim Tomsula was a defensive-minded "Yes Man" who was obviously overwhelmed as a head coach, Coughlin is anything but.

The situation bears watching, as Coughlin could wind up coaching a biceps kissing Colin Kaepernick.

Ex-Giants coach could interview in Philly as early as Monday.

Former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin said during his farewell press conference that he was "not necessarily" done with coaching. Having left the door open, it figured to only be a matter of time before someone expressed interest. Now the Philadelphia Eagles reportedly have.

How weird would that be, and how stomach-turning if Coughlin were to go into Philadelphia and turn the Eagles into a winner?

FOX Sports said Coughlin would need "the right situation" in order to coach again. Do the Eagles qualify? That probably depends on whether Coughlin sees them as a team with a roster close to winning or a team in need of a rebuild.

The Giants did not fire Coughlin. They did not fight him on stepping down, however, and made it clear they felt GM Jerry Reese rather than Coughlin was the guy who could get them turned around after three straight losing seasons. You know Coughlin would love the chance to prove them wrong.
