The New York Giants open their 2014 season Monday night against the Detroit Lions. The game is part of a Monday Night Football doubleheader on ESPN and will begin at the special early time of 7:10 p.m. ET. The second game will feature the San Diego Chargers at the Arizona Cardinals. That game kicks off at 10:20 p.m.
The Giants will be looking to make the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, and trying to get off to improve upon last season's 0-6 start. Odds makers don't like the Giants' chances of winning on the road, with the Giants listed as 6.5-point underdogs. Eli Manning will lead a revamped Giants offense, hoping to rebound from a season during which he threw a career-worst 27 interceptions.
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has 170 career coaching victories. With one more he will surpass Paul Brown and tie Joe Gibbs on the all-time list. Lions coach Jim Caldwell is coaching his first regular-season game with Detroit. He was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-2011.
