New York Giants rocking custom cleats for great causes

The stories behind the Giants’ cleats this Sunday

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Normally when you hear about players’ cleats anymore it’s because they have some bright and fun (or garish, depending on your point of view) design on them, and the NFL is fining them for it. Or occasionally it’s something that actually matters for the game of football, like the shoe became untied or the cleats themselves are too long or short for the field conditions.

But most of the time what we hear about are players getting in trouble for the designs on their shoes.

Not this week, though.

This week the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign invites players to wear custom cleats that represent causes that are close to their hearts, and use social media to explain the stories behind them. There will be more than 500 players around the league wearing custom cleats, and that number includes plenty of players from the New York Giants.

Odell Beckham Jr.

In addition to a great cause, OBJ gets bonus points for Homer and donuts.

Victor Cruz

I’m a big proponent of STEM education, so Cruz’s cleats are a hit with me. They might not be as flashy as some, but I’m hoping we get to see them doing the salsa in the end zone today.

Robbie Gould

Kelvin Sheppard

Hopefully Sheppard’s cleats will help bring some attention after historic flooding this year.

The NFL’s Play 60 initiative is all about getting kids up and active. Great design for the cleats, too.

Ereck Flowers

A heavy cause from the Giants’ quiet left tackle.

Mark Herzlich

He might be out with a concussion today, but that isn’t stopping him from repping Tom Coughlin’s Jay Fund, which pledges to Be There for children with cancer.

Will Beatty

Beatty will be paying representing the former Giants’ coach’s foundation as well.

What do you think about the cleats? Which ones are your favorites? Personally, I’d like to thank the NFL for encouraging the players to bring attention to all these great causes, and the players for participating.
