The hiring by the New York Giants of Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator might have been seen as bad news for backup cornerback Chykie Brown. After all Spagnuolo was the secondary coach with the Baltimore Ravens last season when the Ravens cut Brown after seven games as part of a shakeup of a struggling secondary.
With that in mind, the news that the Giants have re-signed Brown, who played eight games for them in 2014 after being cut by Baltimore, might be considered a bit of a surprise.
Brown, 28, had a -6.9 Pro Football Focus rating while with the Giants, including -6.2 vs. the pass. He had a passer rating against of 110.7 for the entire season, including his work with the Ravens.
The Giants saw cornerback Walter Thurmond sign with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week. Zack Bowman is also an unrestricted free agent, and the team seems unlikely to retain the ineffective Jayron Hosley.
Anyone surprised by the return of Brown?
