Giants' injury report, 9/11: Victor Cruz, Jon Beason both out Sunday vs. Dallas Cowboys

Friday injury update not really a big surprise.

So much for all of that optimism from middle linebacker Jon Beason about being ready for Sunday's season-opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Beason (knee) and Victor Cru (calf) have both been ruled out for Sunday night.

Beason suffered a knee injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first quarter of the first preseason game. He practiced Wednesday, but skipped Thursday when the knee swelled up. He had hoped it would calm down enough for him to play, but apparently it did not.

Head coach Tom Coughlin said Beason "didn't get any better. Didn't get to the point where he could play the way he's like to play."

The injury leaves Uani' Unga, who has never played an NFL snap, and Jasper Brinkley, who was just signed this week, as options at the middle linebacker. J.T. Thomas played some in the middle last season with the Jaguars, and Mark Herzlich also has experience there. The Giants have indicated that Unga will see most of the playing time.

"Young guy who has not had that much experience in there, but he'll give great effort," Coughlin said.

"We've got some things we can do," defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said this week about a Beason absence. "we'll have other plans if things don't go exactly the way we want them. That's part of playing in the games, you got to adjust on the run."

The absence of Cruz has been expected. He suffered the calf injury before the team's second preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Not only has he not practiced, head coach Tom Coughlin told media on Friday that Cruz has yet to run.

"I do not have a time table {for Cruz's return)," Coughlin said. "As soon as he ready to go he'll be on the field."

The Giants play three games in 11 days, so it seems quite possible that the earliest either Beason or Cruz might play would be Week 4 against the Buffalo Bills.
