New York Giants rookie running back Tyrone Tracy was carted off the field with an apparent lower leg injury during Tuesday’s practice.

Tracy suffered the injury after bobbling a kickoff and then getting twisted up while trying to gather the ball before it struck the ground. Tracy’s right leg appeared to buckle. He left the field in the cart with an air cast on his leg.

The Giants announced that Tracy “will be undergoing further imaging at HSS (the Hospital for Special Surgery) for a more comprehensive evaluation.”

The initial findings seem to be that Tracy's injury isn't as bad as initially feared. It's currently being reported that Tracy suffered an ankle sprain and is back in team meetings.

It’s obviously concerning that he was put in an air cast on the field, suggesting that the training staff at least fear that he suffered a fracture and the limb needed to be stabilized immediately. This would be a big blow for an incredibly exciting rookie who appeared in line to open the season as the Giants’ RB2 behind veteran Devin Singletary.

“Can’t really prevent injuries in this game. It’s a 100 percent injury rate,” Singletary said after practice. “You always hate to see one of your brothers go down.”

Fellow rookie running back Dante Miller is dealing with a hamstring injury and is limited. Each of Tracy, Miller, and second-year running back Eric Gray were very impressive during the Giants’ 14-3 win over the Detroit Lions in the first preseason game. The Giants are so short at running back that undrafted rookie Lorenzo Lingard, who was just signed on Monday, took some first-team reps at the end of practice.

Before practice head coach Brian Daboll had lauded the fifth-round pick’s work so far in training camp.

“He’s a smart player,” Daboll said. “He’s done well for a young player that’s just entered into our program.”
