Instant analysis: Giants select Tyler Nubin, S, Minnesota in Round 2 of 2024 NFL Draft

The Giants fill a big hole in their secondary

NCAA Football: Illinois at Minnesota Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants on Friday night selected safety Tyler Nubin out of Minnesota with the 47th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Nubin is pretty widely regarded as the top safety in the draft and he’ll fill a sizable hole in the Giants’ secondary after the departures of Xavier McKinney and Julian Love over the last two years.

Nubin is not a great athlete. He more than makes up for that fact with fantastic football IQ and instincts. He processes quickly and has a great understanding of route concepts. Nubin isn’t a rangy centerfielder as a safety, nor is he a guy who should be asked to play man coverage often. However, Nubin is very good in zone coverage, a coach on the field in the secondary, and a natural ballhawk.

Nubin wouldn’t have been a natural fit in Wink Martindale’s Cover-1 based schemes that use exotic coverage shifts. However, he should be a good fit and an immediate starter in Shane Bowen’s quarters coverage shells. The Giants’ have been at their best over the last two years when the defense is generating turnovers. Nubin should be able to exploit the pressure that Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, and Dexter Lawrence will put on passers and get the offense extra possessions.
