The New York Giants have added three candidates to the list of coaches being considered to become their next defensive coordinator.
The Giants’ defensive backs coach has been considered a possibility should the Giants want to look internally to provide continuity for players. ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan is now reporting that Henderson has officially become a candidate.
An NFL player from 1991-98, Henderson has been coaching defensive backs in the NFL since 2007. He was hired to do that job with the Giants by Joe Judge in 2020, and was kept on board by Brian Daboll.
Henderson, 54, has never been a defensive coordinator.
The Giants requested permission to interview Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley for the job that opened in New York when Wink Martindale and the Giants parted ways last week.
That news was first reported by Adam Schefter.
No word as to whether or not the Chargers will grant the Giants permission to speak with Ansley. Los Angeles denied New York’s request last week to speak with Chargers’ special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken about the Giants’ vacancy at that spot.
Ansley, 42, joined the Chargers as defensive backs coach in 2020. He was promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2023 season, and called defensive plays after Brandon Staley was fired as head coach with three games remaining in the season. Ansley was defensive backs coach with the Oakland Raiders in 2018.
Collegiately, Ansley has worked at Alabama and Tennessee twice, and at Kentucky. He was defensive coordinator for the Volunteers in 2019 and 2020.
Ansley and Daboll crossed paths at Alabama in 2017 when the Crimson Tide won a national title. Daboll was offensive coordinator and Ansley was defensive backs coach.
The 41-year-old Campanile is a Fair Lawn, N.J. native who began his coaching career at Fair Lawn High School and then at Don Bosco Prep.
He coached on both sides of the ball collegiately. Campanile worked at Rutgers from 2012-2015 as a defensive assistant, then coaching tight ends and wide receivers. He was at Boston College from 2016-2018, first serving as defensive backs coach and filling the role of co-defensive coordinator in 2018. He was linebackers coach at Michigan in 2019.
Campanile has been linebackers coach with the Dolphins since 2020.
