It is far too early to obsess over 2024 NFL mock drafts. When one of the heavyweights of the draft analysis business drops his first mock draft of the cycle, though, it needs to be discussed. Dane Brugler of The Athletic did that Wednesday morning. So, let’s look at what Brugler did for the New York Giants at No. 6.

Brugler gave the Giants LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers. Here’s why:

Over the past month, I think Nabers separated himself for several teams as WR2 in this draft. The only FBS pass catcher with 1,500-plus receiving yards in 2023, he also leads the country with 34 receptions of 20-plus yards. The only other college receiver with that many explosive catches over the last five years? Another LSU receiver, Ja’Marr Chase, who had 34 in 2019.

The Giants obviously still have high hopes for Jalin Hyatt and Wan’Dale Robinson, but adding Nabers gives the offense a legitimate No. 1 threat.

The picks ahead of the Giants went as follows:

No. 1 (Chicago Bears) — Caleb Williams, QB, USC
No. 2 (Arizona Cardinals) — Marvin Harrison, WR, Ohio State
No. 3 (New England Patriots) — Drake Maye, QB, Norh Carolina
No. 4 (Chicago Bears) — Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame
No. 5 (Washington Commanders) — Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn State

It’s too early to draw conclusions or ask ‘why Player A instead of Player B’? But, there are a couple of things we can learn.

Brugler is apparently buying, at least for now, the idea that the Giants won’t force a quarterback selection. He does, though, think at least one more quarterback in this class is worthy of a top 10 pick. He has the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selecting LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels at No. 7, one pick after the Giants. Personally, at this very early stage and without a deep study, I am kind of enamored with Daniels and might have a hard time letting him pass.

The only other quarterback Brugler has going in the first round is Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, 22nd to the Seattle Seahawks. So, Bo Nix of Oregon and Michael Penix Jr. of Washington would be available in Round 2.

Another thing we learned is that Brugler believes as of now that two offensive tackles are worthy of exceptionally high selections.

As for the selection of Nabers, if the guy can potentially be a WR1 there is nothing wrong with that.
