Tommy DeVito vs. Tyrod Taylor, the 2024 NFL Draft and more ‘things I think’

BBV's Ed Valentine weighs in:

Here is a question, though. If Tyrod Taylor is off injured reserve and ready to go Week 14 against the Green Bay Packers, the week after the Giants’ late-season bye, who starts at quarterback?

Before Sunday’s victory over the Washington Commanders, I would have said it was a no-brainer that Taylor had to start. My argument would have been that in an already frustrated locker room Brian Daboll would risk losing player support if he did anything else.

As of now, I think I’m still siding with starting Taylor. His experience, especially with two games remaining against the Philadelphia Eagles, could be invaluable. If DeVito lights it up against the Patriots, though, that feeling could change.

Inside the Numbers: Undrafted Tommy DeVito makes history

His 137.7 passer rating was the highest by a Giants quarterback since Daniel Jones' 153.3 in Week 10 of the 2022 season.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that was the highest rating by a rookie free agent quarterback with 15+ attempts in common draft era (1967). DeVito is the first undrafted rookie quarterback to throw five touchdown passes in his first two starts in the common draft era.

DeVito became the fourth quarterback to throw three touchdowns while taking nine sacks in a game since team sacks were first tracked in 1963, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He’s also the first player to not throw an interception in that situation.

The biggest area DeVito needs to improve is his pocket presence. Coach Brian Daboll repeatedly mentioned after the game that the sacks weren’t all the fault of the offensive line.

Pro Football Focus assigned two of the sacks to offensive linemen (left guard Justin Pugh, center John Michael Schmitz) and one to running back Saquon Barkley. That means six of the sacks were attributed to DeVito.

Brian Daboll's dull media presence is by design | New York Post

Paul Schwartz explains the why for the demeanor head coach Brian Daboll has on field vs. behind the microphone:

Daboll is unconcerned with winning the press conference. It is all about limiting distractions and never, ever ripping his players in public. In the back of his mind, the players are all youngsters, many the same age as some of his oldest children. His tolerance for what they do is parental, to a degree.

After a loss, he refuses to appear defeated. After a win, he will not exult. No deflation, no elation. No one will be able to accuse Daboll of quitting on his team when times are bad or hitting the gas pedal on the bandwagon when things are rolling.

Tommy DeVito: Saquon Barkley respect is fueling his NY Giants story | The Record

Barkley made sure veterans upset with how this season was playing out did not check out on DeVito. He embraced the undrafted rookie immediately after the Jets game, and again in Las Vegas against the Raiders.

“Just the way he comes to work every single day,” Barkley said. “When he was the scout team quarterback, the way he would work there. Also, it’s the National Football League. If you’re in the National Football League, you’re here for a reason, not by accident. I don’t think Tommy flinched at all. You’re not here by accident. You’re here to do a job, and every week he’s been getting better and better.”

Barkley mentioned the importance of meeting the people in his community rather than simply donating money to give back or some other “easy way.” He wants to be with the people around him in the city to which he is devoted.

“I feel like it’s something special to come out here and see the look on their faces, put a smile on their faces,” he said. “And not just standing around, actually doing the work too with the volunteers. I feel like it goes a long way, hopefully we’re making an impact.”

Grading all 31 first-round picks after Week 11 of the 2023 NFL season | PFF

CB Dontae Banks. Overall Rookie Grade: 47.2 (Rank: 19/20) Week 11 Grade: 66.6

The Giants finally took some pressure off Banks and played primarily zone coverage against Washington. That worked to his advantage, as he posted his best grade since Week 5. Of course, he was beaten in man coverage by Jahan Dotson for an eight-yard touchdown, but he allowed just one short catch on the day. This schematic change should stay in New York for the benefit of the team and their first-round pick, who had consistently been put in bad positions in shadow coverage.

Daniel Jones’ two neck injuries, torn right ACL and early season struggles have pushed them to the realization that they need to look for their next QB.

2024 NFL Draft order projections: Giants help out Bears | The Athletic

The Bears climbed back into the No. 1 spot via the Carolina pick acquired last March. They can thank the Giants for the latter development. Left for dead after dropping seven of eight games (and losing quarterback Daniel Jones for the season), the Giants scraped together a 31-19 upset of Washington with Tommy DeVito under center. That result moved the Giants down a spot, to No. 2, in our latest projections.

Bill Belichick keeps starting quarterback a mystery | Pats Pulpit

Mac Jones has started every game this year, but he was pulled in favor of Bailey Zappe for the final drive of the team’s Week 10 loss to the Colts. Will Grier is also on the 53-man roster and Malik Cunningham is on the practice squad, but Belichick didn’t bite when asked at his press conference if he’s made a decision about who will be under center on Sunday.

“I’ve told all the players the same thing: Be ready to go. Hopefully they will be,” Belichick said.

The third-string quarterback was asked whether he received any first-team reps in practice on Tuesday. In response, he said nothing.

“I’ll let them tell you how the reps are divvied up,” Grier said. “I’m not going to be the one to do that.”

A Heisman candidate at Michigan, Peppers’ ceiling has always been high. He’s finding it this fall in Foxborough.

The hard-hitting safety has been a tone-setter with his physicality, and if there was a signature hit for this Patriots season, it’s Peppers croaking Davante Adams in Las Vegas. He’s delivered 59 tackles, defended six passes, forced a fumble, and picked off Josh Allen. A throwback player, Peppers has found a way to electrify within the rigid 2023 rulebook.
