The San Francisco 49ers spent the first few weeks of the NFL season staking a claim as the best team in football, until a close loss to the Cleveland Browns last week put a dent in that argument. They’ll look to bounce back against the struggling Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.
It’s up for debate whether quarterback Brock Purdy’s success is due to the elite playmakers around him, but what can’t be disputed is the elite stats he continues to put up. Purdy has thrown 10 touchdown passes and just one interception to go along with a completion percentage of 67.5. His passer rating was above 110 in four of the 49ers’ six games.
The 49ers are scoring 30.7 points per game and allowing just 14.5 points per game, both of which rank second in the league. Before the Browns loss, they had won 10 straight regular season games dating back to last year.
The Vikings have not been quite so fortunate. They set an NFL record with 11 wins in one-score games last year, but lately they’ve been on the wrong end of those close contests. Their only two wins were against the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears, neither of which are quite inspiring.
