Jaylon Smith - Who Are You? Who? Who?

'Cause I really want to know.

Miscast as Sean Lee replacement #1 (LVE was #2), Quinn's 4 - 3, really a 4 - 2 - 5 or 4 - 1 - 6 had no room for him. Smith's 2022 cap hit was scary given his injury history, Vander Esch was cheap and FAs Keanu Neal and Jayron Kearse were better fits. Toss in the magic that is Micah and keeping Jaylon made no sense.

Quinn's defense looks a lot like Martindale's at times. Kearse and/or Neal are in the box often, college safeties flashing and disrupting QBs; Jayron had more pressures and TFL than any LB not named Parsons. The good news is that LVE had his best pass coverage numbers in 2022. Good, not great, but my guess is that when he was on the field he had a defined role with fewer reads to make.

Smith has a similar destiny, perhaps. Better in coverage than Crowder (by less than most think), close to LVE or Benardrick McKinney in 2021. Blitzing hasn't been productive, he's not really a MLB but Wink doesn't seem to need one.
