How a new GM needs to look at Joe Judge (And why he needs to go)

Any new GM coming in has to look at Joe Judge unemotionally and make a decision based on what I see as the facts of his time here in NY.

1. He is not able to teach or motivate. He seems like he can, but the players consistently make the same mistakes week in and week out. Granted he doesn't do a lot of hands on coaching but he hired the "teachers" on his staff and they have not been accountable.

2. He seems to have no sense of urgency to win week to week. He basically played it safe in the preseason with his starters and didn't not play them. When the regular season came they were unprepared to play and win a game in the easiest part of their schedule. Two losses were because of a lack of discipline that, although he does reference that often, shows no sign of improvement.

3. He overprotects his players. he does NOT hold players accountable for poor play. He doesn't need to blast them in the media but there are subtle ways to get the point across. He absolutely refuses to do that in any meaningful way that anyone can see. Players love him. Players coaches RARELY do well in the NFL. There are times when even the best players need to be motivated to some degree.

4. He himself has not improved over the two years he has been here. He is overly conservative and seems unable to manage a game from a HCs standpoint. Wasted TOs and the inability to get plays and players in and out on time has been a problem since he got here and he has shown zero awareness that it is a problem. Can you win in the current NFL with a strategy that is decades old? Probably not

Number 4 is the main reason IMO that the Giants need to move on from Judge. He is the guy we all knew who stayed up all night in college to memorize every possible answer to every test question but who had no functional understanding of what those answers actually meant. Now that he is actually responsible for putting those answers into practice he lacks the knowledge of how to do it. I dont think that he has the capacity or the self awareness to accept that his way isn't working and that real change is needed. Its not something he can get from a book, he has to have the instincts for it and IMO he doesn't have those instincts.
