Giants vs. Broncos injury news: Denver’s Bradley Chubb out vs. Giants

The Denver Broncos have ruled edge defender Bradley Chubb (ankle) out of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Denver Broncos’ edge defender Bradley Chubb (ankle) is being called a “game-time decison” on Sunday against the New York Giants.

One of the prime worries for the Giants leading up to Sunday’s season opener is how well their much-maligned offensive tackles would deal with the combination of Chubb and Von Miller.

If Chubb can’t play that is, of course, a huge break for the Giants. They would be able to focus their attention on Miller, who missed all of last season with a serious ankle injury.

FRIDAY

Saquon Barkley “questionable”

Saquon Barkley has officially been listed as “questionable” by the New York Giants for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Barkley has practiced for the past few weeks and Giants coach Joe Judge had said that if Barkley got through Friday’s practice without incident he expected the star running back top play on Sunday. Barkley has not played since suffering a torn ACL in Week 2 of the 2020 season.

Tight end Evan Engram (calf) won’t play. He is the only Giant officially ruled out.

The good news for the Giants is that Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney and Kyle Rudolph are not even on the injury report. That means all three are expected to play.

As far as injury designations, the NFL says questionable means “uncertain” to play and doubtful means “unlikely” to play.

Here is the Giants official injury report:

Out: TE Evan Engram (calf)
Questionable: RB Saquon Barkley (knee), CB Adoree’ Jackson (ankle)

Bradley Chubb listed as questionable

Broncos’ EDGE Bradley Chubb is officially listed as “questionable” on the team’s Friday practice report. The pass rusher underwent ankle surgery back in May and the injury has been slow to heal. A less-than 100 percent Chubb (or no Chubb at all) would be good news for the Giants’ offense.

Chubb is the only player on the Denver injury report.

Barkley has one hurdle to clear

Saquon Barkley will play Sunday for the New York Giants as they open their season against the Denver Broncos ... unless something happens during Friday afternoon’s practice that makes the Giants change their minds.

That was the word from Giants head coach Joe Judge, per multiple reports via media on scene for Judge’s Friday media availability.

Judge said that as long as there is no setback during Friday’s practice, Barkley should get clearance from the team’s medical staff.

Barkley suffered a season-ending torn ACL and other damage in Week 2 of last season. When training camp began, conservative estimates were that Barkley might not return to action until Week 3 vs. the Atlanta Falcons. He has steadily progressed, though, and now it looks good for Barkley to be available to play Sunday.

Judge also indicated, again per multiple reports on Twitter, that if Barkley plays there will be no pre-determined “pitch count” in terms of snaps he will play or touches he will get.

THURSDAY

Tight end Evan Engram was the only player who sat out practice on Thursday as the New York Giants prepared for Sunday’s season opener vs. the Denver Broncos. Engram, who suffered a calf injury in the preseason finale, has done nothing but work on the side with trainers since suffering the injury.

Denver’s Bradley Chubb sat out Wednesday practice

Edge rusher Bradley Chubb was the only Denver Broncos’ player who did not participate in practice on Wednesday as the team prepares for Sunday’s season opener against the New York Giants. Chubb has an ankle injury sustained prior to Denver’s final preseason game.

Bradley’s ankle’s still troubling him some,” [Denver coach Vic] Fangio said before practice. “He’ll get some work on the side and then we’ll see where he’s at tomorrow.

“It’s just been slow to come around.”

The Broncos expect both Chubb, who had 7.5 sacks last season, and future Hall of Famer Von Miller, coming off ankle surgery that forced him to miss the 2020 season, to play. The question will be, how much? Fangio said Wednesday the Broncos may have to monitor snaps played for both players.

“A lot of that is determined by how long the drives are that you’re out there for,” Fangio said. “So if they have some long drives on us, it’ll be managed throughout that. And then Von will still have to be managed too.”

Any snaps the Giants’ offense can take without Chubb, Miller, or both, on the field, will be beneficial for an offensive line that did not inspire confidence in the preseason.

WEDNESDAY

New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney sounded optimistic on Wednesday that despite a spring and summer filled with stops and starts he will be ready to play in Sunday’s season opener vs. the Denver Broncos.

“I’m good,” Toney told media members at Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

The Giants’ first-round pick (No. 20 overall) has dealt with a number of issues since the Giants selected him after trading down from No. 11. He skipped voluntary OTAs, began training camp on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, then shortly after returning to practice suffered a hamstring injury, keeping him sidelined for the entire preseason.

Toney finally returned to practice last week.

Toney said it is “on the coaches” to decide whether or not he is active on Sunday. On Wednesday, though, he couldn’t come up with a reason why he shouldn’t play.

“Nah, I mean, unless you wanna go make one up,” Toney said.

Head coach Joe Judge said Wednesday that he believes Toney could have a “significant role” vs. Denver.

“I’d say it is realistic for him to have a significant role based on how he practices this week. We’re seeing his health improve, we’ve seen him do a lot of things with the team as we’ve kept on moving. He’s handled the installs very well,” Judge said. “I’d say for a player who hasn’t seen obviously pre-season games or a lot of significant time volume wise on the field with the guys through preseason, he’s been able to go out there and manage it and execute in practice what we’ve asked him to. I think that’s a tribute to how he’s worked off the field.”

Two things that are significant here. Evan Engram is the only player who did not practice. Left guard Shane Lemieux (partially torn patellar tendon) is not listed on the injury report.
