Giants’ roster moves: WR Andy Jones signed

Giants add to their wide receiver group

NFL: Preseason-Detroit Lions at Houston Texans John Glaser-USA TODAY Sports

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan is reporting, per agent Christina Phillips, that the New York Giants are signing wide receiver Andy Jones.

Jones came into the NFL in 2016, when he was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Florida. Jones spent the 2016 season on the Cowboys’ practice squad before being waved before the 2017 season.

He was claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans the next day and played his first NFL game shortly thereafter. Jones was soon waived by the Texans and was signed to the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. Jones spent most of the 2017 season on the Lions’ practice squad but was promoted to their active roster late in the season and again in 2018. He spent the 2019 season on the Miami Dolphins practice squad and was out of football for 2020. Jones signed with the San Francisco 49ers in June of 2021 and was waived on July 27th.

2018 was the last time Jones appeared in a game, and has played in 11 total games with 3 starts. Over that time he has 11 receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. This move fills the roster hole created by the sudden retirement of Joe Looney.

More roster moves

Running back Mike Weber, signed on July 22, was placed on IR with a hip flexor. The Giants signed tight end Tommy Stevens to take his roster spot.

Stevens, 6-5 and 235 pounds, played quarterback at Mississippi State in 2019 after playing his first three seasons at Penn State. He played quarterback, running back and wide receiver for the Nittany Lions.

Stevens was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, No. 240 overall, by the New Orleans Saints, who converted him to tight end. He was waived on Sept. 5, signed to the Saints’ practice squad the following day and released on Nov. 10.

Stevens was signed to the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad 10 days later. The Panthers moved hm back to quarterback. Stevens played five snaps in the season finale vs. New Orleans on Jan. 3 and rushed for 24 yards on four carries. Carolina signed him to a reserve/futures contract on Jan. 2 and waived him on June 1.
