After a strange scene on Wednesday during which Kelvin Benjamin spoke to coach Joe Judge and GM Dave Gettleman, then walked off the practice field trailed by Gettleman, the New York Giants are expected to release Benjamin.

There are no details as to the conversation Benjamin, a veteran receiver who was signed after a rookie minicamp tryout, had with Judge and Gettleman. No reason has yet been given for why he left the field.

Benjamin, 30, was attempting a comeback after not playing in the NFL since 2018. A 2014 first-round pick by the Carolina Panthers — when Gettleman was GM there — Benjamin has 209 receptions. He has played with the Panthers, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Benjamin worked at both tight end and wide receiver during spring practices.

Benjamin seemed unlikely to make the Giants’ roster as the team appears to have a healthy amount of depth at both tight end and wide receiver.
