Jackson Barton was claimed off waivers by the New York Giants from the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 6 of last season. An offensive tackle, Barton spent the season on the 53-man roster, but never saw any action.
With veteran Nate Solder likely to fill the swing tackle role, will there be room on the roster for Barton, who will turn 26 during training camp?
Let’s discuss as we continue profiling the 90 players the Giants will bring to training camp.
The basics
Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 302
Age: Turns 26 in August
Position: OT
Experience: 2
Contract: Third year of four-year, $2,599,612M deal | Guaranteed: $79,612 (at signing) | 2021 cap hit: $850,000
Career to date
Barton was a 2019 seventh-round pick (240th overall) by the Indianapolis Colts. He spent part of the season on the Colts’ practice squad, was poached by the Kansas Chiefs and won a Super Bowl ring as a rookie despite never seeing the field.
The Chiefs waived him at the beginning of the 2020 season, and the Giants claimed him.
2021 outlook
Developmental offensive tackles only get so long to develop, and Barton will be entering his third NFL training camp. The guess here is that Barton will be fortunate to find a practice squad job with the Giants when it’s all said and done.
