Giants add to their secondary rather that their offensive line

After a third trade in as many rounds, this one a move up from No. 76 to 71, the New York Giants on Friday night selected UCF cornerback Aaron Robinson No. 71 overall in Round 3 of the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Giants traded down in Round 1, moving from No. 11 to No. 20 and acquiring three additional draft picks from the Chicago Bears before selecting wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

In Round 2, the Giant moved down from No. 42 to No. 50 before selecting Georgia edge rusher Azeez Ojulari.

To make the move up for Robinson, the Giants surrendered their fifth-round pick, No. 164. That is a pick the giants had gotten in Thursday’s trade down with the Chicago Bears.

Robinson is 5-foot-11½, 186 pounds. Draft analyst Dane Brugler of the Athletic had this to say about Robinson in his annual draft guide:

A two-year starter at UCF, Robinson played nickel back in defensive coordinator Randy Shannon’s scheme, lining up mostly vs. the slot receiver while also seeing reps on the outside. After three non-descript seasons to start his college career (one at Alabama, two at UCF), he earned All-AAC honors the past two seasons with 20 passes defended in 22 games. Robinson is a quick-footed, urgent athlete with excellent turn-and-run skills to stay in phase versus route speed. He reacts quickly to find the football, but his mental process isn’t a strength to his game. Overall, Robinson needs to add more discipline and anticipation to his play style, but he boasts NFL-level athleticism and toughness with the inside/outside versatility to play various roles in an NFL secondary.

In his Robinson prospect profile, BBV’s Chris Pflum wrote:

“UCF cornerback Aaron Robinson projects as a starting slot corner at the NFL level with the ability to play outside cornerback if necessary. He has the ability to play confidently in man or zone coverage, though he probably shouldn’t be matched up against more athletic receivers in man coverage that often.

“Robinson could also have upside as a safety, but he would need to show continued improvement in his tackling technique and consistency.

“Robinson’s lack of ball production might get him overlooked by some, but he should be a reliable starter with the ability to deny plays if not turn the ball over outright. He saw his production take a slight step backward in his senior year, but that had more to do with opposing quarterbacks avoiding him than any regression on Robinson’s part.”
