Good morning, New York Giants fans!
The great thing about this mock isn’t the picks. I don’t care. There are so many mock drafts none of them, including my own, mean anything. They’re even less memorable. What is valuable here is the depth of information from people inside the league.
Bargains ... and buyer beware!
It will surprise no one that the choice here is wide receiver.
2021 NFL free agency: Analytics-based player-team fits
Cynthia Frelund uses her analytics model to peg Ju-Ju Smith-Schuster to the Giants. She writes:
Projected to add: 1.11 wins.
I really wanted to list two teams here, just to show the impact that a slot receiver can have, especially in the red zone. As for Smith-Schuster's fit with the Giants, eight of his nine touchdowns in 2020 came from the slot (tied for the most, with Travis Kelce, per NGS). New York QBs had a passer rating when targeting the slot of just 82.3 last season, second-lowest in the NFL. On a roster that also boasts a returning Saquon Barkley, Smith-Schuster could easily fulfill the role of a No. 1 WR.
Valentine’s View: I’m not a big fan of this one. I would rather see the Giants sign or draft a full-time “X” or outside receiver so that Sterling Shepard can be left alone in the slot, where he is best.
New York Giants -- DB Emlen Tunnell
The first Black player to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio, Tunnell was signed by the Giants as an undrafted rookie in 1948. Nicknamed "The Gremlin," Tunnell helped the Giants capture their first league title in 1956. The best kickoff/punt returner of his era, Tunnell retired with 79 interceptions, the second-highest total in NFL history. Tunnell spent his final three seasons with the Packers, where he helped Vince Lombardi win his first of five NFL titles in 1961. Tunnell was named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team in 2019.
Valentine’s View: I can’t disagree, but I was really surprised to see Tunnell chosen here.
Kenny Golladay or bust for receiver-needy New York Giants? - New York Giants Blog- ESPN
Jordan Ranaan writes that the belief around the league is that the Giants want Golladay. And that should surprise ... no one.
Report: Giants optimistic they can work out something with Nate Solder - ProFootballTalk
It makes sense that the Giants want a veteran tackle on the roster. I’m just a bit surprised Solder might be the guy.
