A Sample Mock Draft That Meets My Specs

Following several of you who have been posting mocks, I decided to go on record with one that reflects my sense of priorities for the Giants. I decided to use TDN, which I hear more people say is realistic than any of the others. (I don't know if that's true or not). And I love trade-downs, but DG has never done one, and the degree of difficulty in meeting needs is greatest when you're stuck with the Giants' current 6 picks. And this assumes no FA signings, further upping the degree of difficulty. My philosophy is:

1. WR is the top need, I'm willing to wait until round 2 but no later to grab one. Since there is depth in this class and no depth on the Giants at WR I'm on the lookout for another in round 6.

2. EDGE is next highest priority. I have doubts about the highest rated ones and like what I see from some lower prospects, so I target round 2 or 3 for this.

3. On the OL, after going OT twice in 2020, I want the Giants to give Thomas and Peart the chance to develop into what we need, so I prioritize G in this draft, looking round 2 or 3.

4. CB is another priority, but Farley and Surtain are the only ones I will spend my #1 on, so I hope to grab a tall developmental one who can play the boundary in round 3 or 4.

5. Given the opportunity I will grab a TE or LB if I see one I like later, or an OT for depth purposes, or even a RB.

That's what I want. Here is what I got:

#11: Jaylen Waddle, WR. My favorites Chase and Pitts were gone, Smith was still there but I felt Waddle was more of a sure thing assuming his ankle is OK. Could have also taken Bateman, as I discussed in a Fanpost last week. Also passed on Paye and Parsons, who I worry could be boom or bust. Farley and Surtain were gone.

#42: Azeez Ojulari, EDGE: My favorite EDGE in the draft, shocked to see him there at #42. Passed on Wyatt Davis and Pat Freiermuth, two of my favorite choices in other mocks I do, only because EDGE is my higher priority and the guy I love is there. LB Zaven Collins FYI was long gone at #30.

#76: Aaron Banks, G: Davis is gone, Deonte Brown is gone, so Banks is my next best option to either replace Zeitler if we release him, or to compete with Hernandez and Lemieux. Passed on Jabril Cox, a LB I like, because G is my higher priority. Also passed on Osa Odighizua, a DT whom I also like.

#116: Benjamin St-Juste, CB: Needs development but could eventually be the answer at CB2. Chose him over two other CB candidates, Kelvin Joseph and Rodarius Williams, and also passed on a TE (Kenny Yeboah), a double dip at G (Ben Cleveland), and a double dip at WR (Sage Surratt, a big who would complement the small Waddle).

#198: Simi Fehoko, WR: I wrote about him a couple of weeks ago. Raw prospect but great tools, a big to complement Waddle. Other good big WR prospects are still around at this point, like Austin Watkins, Cornell Powell, Trevon Grimes. I'd be happy with any of them. I also passed on grabbing a TE (Nick Eubanks), thought a big WR was more important.

#202: Cole Van Lanen, OT: All the players I passed on at 198 above were still there at 202, but I went OT for depth on the line. Better run blocker than pass blocker. In retrospect I might have chosen Eubanks, that way I would have filled 5 of the 6 position needs I had identified.

The only other position I missed was LB, though I could have taken Cox at #76 and Cleveland at #116 and passed on CB in this draft had I chosen to. The other strategy I could have followed was to take Davis at #42 and either Cox or an EDGE like Weaver or Roche at #76, but I couldn't pass on Ojulari. Hard to pass on Freiermuth too but I did.
