The Trade-Down No One Talks About

Giants fans are divided in their opinions about the much-ballyhooed trade down that Dave Gettleman made in the first round of the 2021 draft. Some of us think that the additional 2022 1st and 4th round picks we got for moving down (plus an extra 5th that we later used to trade up to get Aaron Robinson), plus getting a very talented receiver in Kadarius Toney, was worth it. Others feel that drafting Micah Parsons or Rashawn Slater would have been better.

But that wasn't the only trade down the Giants made in the 2021 draft. In round 2, Gettleman traded down with Miami from #42 to #50, getting an extra 2022 3rd round pick in the process. We used that #50 pick to draft Azeez Ojulari. Azeez has been quiet in sacks the past month, but he is still tied with Leonard Williams for the team lead with 5.5. He is also tied with Austin Johnson for the team lead in tackles for loss with 6. And he is continuing to accumulate QB pressures.

With the #42 pick that Miami traded up to get, they drafted OT Liam Eichenberg, who is now their starting LT. Eichenberg has not distinguished himself so far, attracting 9 penalty flags and giving up 9 sacks. The only other OLs drafted between Eichenberg and Ojulari were Aaron Banks, who so far has only seen the field in 3 games, and only has 5 snaps on defense, and Jackson Carman, who has yet to see the field on defense. Ojulari will probably be going head-to-head with Eichenberg on Sunday, it's worth watching out for.

We'll see how things turn out, but at the moment it seems the Giants got the better of that deal. All of you who do mocks should take a moment when you use that 3rd round pick to remember that Trader Dave made what looks like a good deal when he gave up our #42 pick.
