The New York Giants made a series of roster moves on Tuesday, most notably placing safety Jabrill Peppers on injured reserve. Peppers has a ruptured ACL and a high-ankle sprain. HJis season is over.
Peppers suffered knee and ankle injuries while returning a punt on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
Peppers, a free agent at the end of the season, has seen his role on defense reduced somewhat this season. Now, the Giants will be without him. Peppers was also a player frequently mentioned as a candidate to be traded by the Giants prior to the Nov. 2 trade deadline. That won’t happen now.
Peppers’ roster spot will be taken by defensive back J.R. Reed. The Giants have signed Reed, who played one game for the Los Angeles Rams this season, off the Rams’ practice squad. Reed appeared in seven games for Los Angeles last season. He has played exclusively on special teams.
The Giants have now placed starters Nick Gates, Shane Lemieux, Blake Martinez, Andrew Thomas and Peppers on IR. Only Thomas is expected to return this season.
David Sills waived
Wide receiver David Sills and cornerback Josh Jackson have been waived by the Giants.
Sills was signed off the practice squad to the active roster last week. He dropped the only pass thrown to him. Waiving him is perhaps an indication that the Giants some or all of their injured receivers — Kenny Golladay, Sterling Shepard, Kadarius Toney — back for Monday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
If Sills clears waivers, it would seem a good possibility that he would be re-signed to the practice squad.
Jackson was acquired in a trade for cornerback Isaac Yiadom before the season began. He never played a snap for the Giants.
The Giants also terminated defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton from the practice squad.
