One of the biggest disappointments with this 2021 New York Giants team is the stark regression from Patrick Graham’s defensive unit. The defense only allowed 349 yards per game last season, ranking 12th in the league. They were ninth in scoring, only allowing 22 points per game as well.
They put pressure on the quarterback, rarely allowed explosive plays, and hardly missed tackles. Sadly, the current defense is a night and day difference from last season. They allow 29.5 points per game, ranking 29th, and they allow just above 400 yards per game, which ranks 27th in the NFL.
The loss of Blake Martinez is felt at the second level, but the problem is deeper than his absence. Offensive coordinators have learned how to attack Patrick Graham’s concepts, and Sean McVay did a wonderful job manipulating the Giants when they ran man coverage.
