The New York Giants on Wednesday signed placekicker/punter Ryan Santoso to a reserve/futures contract.
Santoso spent the season on the Giants’ practice squad. He was added to the 53-man roster when Graham Gano was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, but was inactive as Gano came off the list in time to kick against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Santoso’s only regular-season NFL experience came in 2019 when he handled kickoffs for the Tennessee Titans, getting touchbacks on nine of 16 kickoffs. He has neither kicked a field goal or extra point or punted in a regular-season game.
The 6-foot-5, 258-pound Santoso handled both kicking and punting duties at the University of Minnesota from 2014-17. He punted 144 times and averaged 41.8 yards. As a kicker, he made 29 of 39 field goal attempts. His career-long was 52 yards.
“Ryan’s a guy who has a huge leg, he’s shown a tremendous amount of improvement since he’s been here. It’s a unique skillset that he does all three, field goals, kickoffs and punts,” head coach Joe Judge said of Santoso when it appeared the Giants might need him in a game. “He’s definitely a developing player. I think he has a big upside in this league for a long time, I really do.”
