The New York Giants Thursday made a low-risk, high-reward signing, adding former Kansas City Chiefs second-round pick Breeland Speaks on a reserve/futures contract.

Speaks, 25, is a 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive end who was selected in the second round (46th overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018. He played in 16 games with four starts, getting 1.5 sacks, eight quarterback hits and 24 tackles in 476 defensive snaps, 40 percent of the Chiefs’ defensive plays that season.

Speaks missed all of 2019 due to a knee injury and was released by Kansas City prior to the start of the 2020 season. He then spent time on the practice squads of the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.

Here is part of a scouting report from

He can be chippy and emotional on the field and needs to mature, but he has the talent and ability to continue getting better. He’s inconsistent at the point of attack along the interior and his best fit could be at an end spot in a 3-4. He has the upside to become an eventual starter, but his floor must be taken into account.
