Roster moves: Giants place Xavier McKinney, David Mayo on IR

Giants make further roster moves

The New York Giants have made the expected roster moves and placed safety Xavier McKinney and linebacker David Mayo on the injured reserve list.

By waiting until 4 p.m. on Sunday, the Giants avoided placing either on season-ending injured reserve. Under the new rules for 2020, a team can activate a player from the IR after just three weeks, and there is no limit to the number of players who can be activated.

McKinney is expected to miss two to three months as he recovers from a fractured foot he suffered in practice last week. Mayo, meanwhile, may only be on the IR for a short while as he may miss just a month while recovering from surgery to trim a torn meniscus.

The move to place Mayo and McKinney on the injured reserve created a pair of open roster spots. The Giants filled those spots by re-signing defensive back Brandon Williams and tight end Eric Tomlinson, both of whom were cut Saturday.
