With the potential that both regular punt gunners will not be able to play Sunday vs. the San Francisco 49ers, the New York Giants have promoted Johnny Holton from their practice squad for the game.
Holton, a wide receiver, was picked up by the Giants right before the beginning of the season. He is a 29-year-old who has played in 48 NFL games with the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers. Holton gives the Giants protection with Sterling Shepard on IR, but has only 14 receptions in four NFL seasons.
Holton’s primary role will be on special teams, where he has played 612 snaps in his career. The Giants could be without defensive back Adrian Colbert (quad/doubtful) and cornerback Brandon Williams (groin/questionable). When both were healthy in Week 1 they were the duo special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey used as the punt gunners.
