We cannot afford to draft Trevor Lawrence

Now, I want to start this off by saying I think its highly unlikely the Giants end up with the number 1 overall pick (which is what they would need for Lawrence to be available to them). As tough as our schedule is, the Jets are the Jets. We might be a 4 or 3 win team, but the Jets could legitimately go 0-16. Darnold is toast, they traded away their best defensive player, and they have Adam Gase as their head coach. But I digress. On the off chance the Giants do wind up with the 1st overall pick, they simply cannot afford to draft Lawrence.

We saw today that the coaching staff (except for maybe Garrett) is legit. What the team lacked was talent. The only positions the Giants are set at are QB and D-Line (in Graham's scheme, EDGE is an OLB, and thus not a part of the D-Line). If we pick Lawrence, we'd be going from a good to great at QB, which is great and all, but that marginal upgrade isn't going to be enough for us to start winning again. Some teams out there with an actual need at QB are going to be willing to sell their soul for Lawrence, and we would be wise to take them up on their offer.

Look at what Rams got for the 2nd overall pick (in order to draft RGIII) in 2012. They got the Redskins to give them 3 1s and a 2 . The return for the rights to draft Lawrence will easily exceed that. We could reasonably expect 4 1s, maybe even more. With our current talent level, we can't afford to pass a haul like that up. If we pick correctly, we could speed our rebuild up by 5 years. I don't know about you, but if I have the opportuniy to skip 5 years of losing, I'm taking it.

(P.S. This all more or less applies to drafting Justin Fields as well. If the Giants wind up with a top 5 pick Fields will be in play, and while the return won't be nearly the same as it would be for Lawrence, the logic remains the same)
