In case you wondering, the four-year, $64 million contract running back Christian McCaffrey received from the Carolina Panthers this offseason definitely got the attention of New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley.

Barkley is entering Year 3 of his four-year, $31.194 million rookie contract. He should be the next running back in line for a mega-contract.

“Yes, when Christian signed that big contract the first thing that came to my mind was I’m happy for him,” Barkley said Wednesday during a videoconference.

“I was happy for him and he deserves it, but for me I’m a big believer in taking care of doing the little things first. That’s right now coming to the meetings, trying to be the best leader, the best player ... I feel like if you take care of that all things take care of [themselves] in the future.”

The flip side of that, of course, was Todd Gurley getting cut by the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley called that “shocking,” but said he understands the business of pro football.

“I don’t need Todd Gurley getting traded or cut to remind me how the NFL is,” Barkley said. “That’s just the NFL, that’s the business, and that’s why you’ve gotta try to take advantage of every single day you can.”
